Rejection email from KP !

Question to the PC ,I was told by one of the program coordinators at big institutions in the south (kind of top 15) that number of applicant this year is less than the previous years !
How accurate is this info ,and if it was true ,what are reasons in your opinion?

thx

Would be interesting to know what PC has to say regarding low applicants this season!

Any ideas as to whether it is generally acceptable to email updated CVs to programs?

So far this year our volume is down ~8%. Why? I have no idea.

It's absolutely fine to email an updated CV to programs from which you've already received an invitation or haven't yet heard anything. Sorry to say that it will be useless to send it to any program that has already sent you a regret.

:luck:

So far this year our volume is down ~8%. Why? I have no idea.

In today's market a hospitalist makes around $ 200,000/year (mind you they only work for 6 months a year) and an average cardiology fellows makes around $ 60000/year. After 3 yrs of general cardiology and 1-2 yrs of further training the cardiology fellow will have earned $ 700,000 less than his colleague who went for a Hospitalist job .Assuming that hospitalist earning doesn't increase and cardiologist income stays the same ,i.e~ $ 4000000, it will take ~4 yrs to come to even . Now add the student loan and interest on it , inflation, return on investment and increasing Medicare cuts on Cath and Echo to the picture, it is not difficult to imagine why there is decreasing trend in the number of people going for Cards. If the Medicare cuts continues and the Hospitalist market remain lucrative, which I believe will get even better because of the recent change in the Hospital payment and Health care law, the competition for the Cardiology spots will ease off dramatically in the next few years; only the hard core will go for it.

Is it true that once you get to the interview stage, everyone is on a level playing field and it's more of "how you fit in with the program- your interests, their interests etc".

It will be helpful if the forum members who have received interview invites can also mention their credentials for others to gauge the responses.

First time I here about a 99 in the USMLE step 3, interesting case.

I have heard about a 99 in Step 3. It is commendable, and possible. Congratulations to all the applicants who are getting interviews from extremely competitive places such as THI, and UCLA. You will certainly match this season.

majority of the prgrams are still to respond. However lack of initial response ( like mine )is probably not a good prognostic sign:rolleyes: .
The next 4 weeks are going to be critical ....

Rejection: Mayo Rochester and Mayo Arizona (same day)

Dear ERAS,
I promise next time you stay quiet I am not gonna complain. Stop sending me rejections (Northwestern and Mayo Arizona today)

Do MGH support H1b?

:( its fine, I can shift to J1 visa,, its MGH!
What do you guys think?

Rej from mayo-ariz and IV from St Luke's Roosevelt..an interesting point about the above discussion-I had a personal conversation with the PC at MGH-as my research mentor had written a personalised letter to the PD at MGH....they DO NOT consider applicants on an H1B(didnt even look at my application....)-and the criteria is to be on j1 even before application day......I am sure they might make exceptions for candidates they really like-but I would probably have a open discussion before/shortly after the interview itself.......MGH as an instituition though supports an H1 visa as a close friend of mine is there on one............but the Cards fellowship was very stringent...

I think If a program likes you, they can continue to support your H1 visa status. Transfering your visa status from one institution to another, is not that complicated, at least in my experience.

At issue is that supporting a candidate on an H1b costs a program several thousand dollars more than others. Given the current financial challenges at most institutions (even the moneyed/cushy ones), programs are more concerned about the additional funding that would be required. I'm not saying that strong candidates on H1bs are out of the game. Cards2012 is an example. But we are thinking harder about it.

Finally the first one today; Mount Sinai (Urban Community)

After strings of rejections it has been awful quite last two days. I feel like I don't exist anymore. Many of the program that I have applied have already extended IVs or have started. Does this mean that the program have tossed out my application and won't care to let me know whats going on? Should I start calling them? ProgramCoordinator Could you please shed some light on this issue
