There wasn't a whole lot of traffic on the thread for 2012 but hopefully with child neuro being fully on ERAS this year there will be more of us. Best of luck everyone! Hope to see you on the interview trail.

1) Keep the list in the body when you reply
2) Please sort alphabetically by state
3) Try to say what school/program you are adding in the subject line
4) It would be helpful if the person who FIRST adds a program could also include the date they received their invite.

Please include these instructions when you quote - And quote the last list available!
Step 1: Click on the blue "QUOTE" button at the bottom right of the last post (don't copy and paste since it will not pick up the HTML code for boldface fonts).
Step 2: Remove the bracketed things at the very beginning and very end. (QUOTE=username;numbers) and (/QUOTE) - where the parentheses are brackets.
Step 3: Make your additions, then post. Please type what you are adding in the title/subject line so people won't have to search the whole post to see what you added.

Some things that came up this last week:

1)Make sure you know whether the peds side of programs specifically want a letter from a gen peds chair, program director or clerkship director.
2)Make sure you know whether programs need you to submit a separate app via ERAS for gen peds (some do and some don't)

I feel like there has to be more than just the 3 of us reading these based on the number of views. So if you're reading, please let me know your thoughts on this...

Has anyone else had a problem with a program that isn't willing to coordinate the peds and the neuro interviews for the same trip? I feel like it's not very reasonable to ask applicants to fly out twice to interview with 2 departments at the same institution. I want to try to minimize flying to the same city/area for 2 different institutions, but if that doesn't work out, I understand. But really? Twice for the same hospital?

Thoughts? Feedback? Thanks!

I think there are definitely programs that have less synergy with the gen peds side of things. I've encountered at least one program where scheduling has become an issue. It probably tells you something about the program as well. I have heard from residents at some programs complaining about feeling like lost step-children either by gen peds or adult neuro. Something to consider when you make your rank list, in my opinion.

How many programs are everyone planning on visiting?

How many programs are everyone planning on visiting?

The recommendation made to me was to interview at ~8. But I'm going to do as many as my schedule allows given that I don't burn out. I have already withdrawn my app at some places because there's only so many days that interviews are held at diff hospitals.

My sig other is also in the match, so we're trying to keep as many options open as possible to maximize chances of finding hospitals we both like in the same city.

Thank you!! Looking forward to getting the ball rolling on these interviews... best of luck to you and everyone out there applying for a position!!!

Quick question for all: are you the only ones at your school that you know of applying for peds neuro? What difficulties did you encounter in the process? I'm the only one I know of, and felt so lost initially, no matter who I turned to for help; they tried their best to help me, but its just so new to ERAS/NRMP! Following match, I think it'd be cool to formulate something helpful online for those applying -- step-by-step.

Sounds about what I want - I am looking at 10 or so. These two day long interviews are tough to schedule.

Dude, tell me about it. I wish all the programs sent out their interview dates all at once, so I can figure out a schedule and book it once. As soon as I schedule one interview, another institution needs that exact date. These are places I don't want to drop without interviewing & nobody answers very quickly about rescheduling... which makes me feel cruddy about asking.

Are other people contacting programs to reschedule interviews after you've confirmed? I would at least feel better knowing others do the same thing...

I have definitely had to reschedule at least two so far and they have been very nice about accommodating me.

Hi, I have a couple of advanced position interviews for child neurology 2015 in Duke Univ. And UTSW Dallas. Is anyone else in a similar situation?
Any info on whether requesting them for a Pediatric position for 2 yrs would be worth?since other smaller peds programs don't offer a 2 yr position.
Should I even interview if I don't have a preliminary position secured?
Thanx.

Congrats on the interviews. Definitely go for the interviews. Before you go for the interview, mention to both the child neuro people that you would like to do pediatrics in the same place if possible, and also email the program director for the pediatrics program, and explain that you are interviewing for child neuro, and would like to do pediatrics there. most programs were accommodating when i applied 2 years ago. only 3 programs outright said they would not be able to accommodate 2 year pediatrics spots (NYU though i think that has changed, INOVA, and georgetown).

Good luck! let me know if you have any other questions, happy to help!

Thank you so much for the reply. UTSW has already said that they won`t be able to accommodate my request for a 2 yr position.I`m waiting on Duke, but their initial email clearly stated that they have slots full for a categorical 5 yr program. Irrespective of their reply,I plan to now interview with the program.

I had one more question with regards to Child Neurology Match. As most programs are small with a few positions only, what is a safe number of interviews for a match?
Thanks a lot again

The recommendation made to me was for somewhere in the ballpark of 8-10 interviews. I'm sure that "safe" probably varies a bit from person to person...

I went through the process last year-- if you're considering any advanced programs at all, you'll probably want to be getting some interviews at stand-alone pedi prelim programs. There's not many, and even fewer that offer a 2-year position outright, but they're out there. I didn't realize this until like January last year. After about a week of freaking out, I reached out and got a last-minute interview at the program where I am now doing my pedi intern year (I matched to an Advanced spot for child neuro).

Sorry I'm just now seeing this-- I really wished that every program director out there was telling their students that if you're applying to child neuro, it's probably a good idea to apply to a bunch of pedi prelims, as well.

Have run into similar problem with Northwestern, LIJ/Northshore and UC Irvine, all of which seem to have poor communication, if any, with their general pediatrics colleagues. I am looking specifically for the five year track in one place, yet it seems like many of these programs are still stuck in the San Francisco Match mentality. Even the way many programs are categorized in ERAS keeps changing.

If you haven't done so, go back now and re-check all the general pediatric programs and see if they've added a "2 year preliminary child neurology" box next to their original "Categorical" checkoff box. MANY HAVE UPDATED THIS TO REFLECT THE COMBINED TRACK. It's frustrating since now there's as much as a month's lag time between applying directly to a "categorical" child neuro program and now to their general peds program.

On the bright side, places like Mayo, Kentucky, St. Louis, UT Houston, Loma Linda and SUNY Buffalo have the right idea and simply asked for one application and have coordinated their interviews with pediatrics.
