Class of 2019!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Status update: I have sent a very brief update letter to a bunch of schools. Apparently I'm still "under review" at some of them (looking at you, Loyola and Temple)... -____-

Glad you got that update out to your schools - you work quickly! I hope it proves helpful for your schools - keep the status updates coming, I'm curious to see what this month brings you (crossing my fingers for ONLY good news)! I'm actually still under review with Loyola, as well (which seems like the better status to have, so not all is lost!)

I didn't write much at all. Just that I have worked X # hours as a scribe thus far and telling them again that it has been a meaningful experience for me. What is the other, not as good status for Loyola?

This is just based on what others have speculated on the Loyola thread, but apparently having the phrasing "has been reviewed" in the online portal is sort of like a hold status. However, I think people have still received interviews with that status so who knows at this point!

Oh yeah, I remember that discussion popped up a while back. I could have sworn I had the "has been reviewed" status a couple months ago. Do we know if it's possible to change from "has been reviewed" to "under review" since it's now past the first wave of II's and acceptances?

I'm not entirely sure, but I seem to remember a couple posts mentioning either a switch or someone from last year switching back to under review... Hopefully I didn't just make that up, but I swear I saw something along those lines posted.

I'll take that as potentially good news. As long as I don't have any acceptances, I might as well try to get more interviews.

I think it is good! And that's the best approach for the time being. I hope more start coming your way!!

Is SDN being really buggy on anyone else's phones? It keeps chopping off the ends of posts, which makes procrastination via aimless phone surfing much more challenging hahaha.

Hope you hear good news soon, @Ace Khalifa! I might send an update to a few schools in two weeks. I have a first author poster presentation coming up... I'm not sure if that's worthy of an update, but might as well try. Do you all think a post-interview update/expression of continued interest would annoy Mayo? I already send a combined thank you/LOI in September. Ugh I wish that this wasn't so complicated. It feels like this weird awkward game of being interested but not desperate or pushy or too interested........ Oh god this is what dating is like, huh? Crap. I'm not ready to enter the single/casual dating life :( Maybe I can just be a crazy cat lady doctor.... That sounds easiest... Hahaha

I would argue that your first author poster presentation is more significant of an update than my "Oh, I've worked this many hours as a scribe" update lol. I sent this update to ECU as post-interview, and within 10 minutes of sending the email I get a quick "Thanks" reply. I say go for it. Of course, I still haven't been accepted anywhere yet, so that might be biasing my reasoning lol.

Neither school has a set date for releasing decisions. That's why 10/15 was uneventful for me minus my Mizzou interview. I think 6-8 weeks post-interview is a common ballpark estimate. Other than that, it's completely random, but applicants are reviewed multiple times until April.

Edit: It would be kind of interesting if intern year were broadly specialized (medicine vs surgery for example), but undecided enough so that you could apply into a particular specialty more confidently after working fully in several rotations. However, I guess that's what M3 should be about, it just seems difficult to make those decisions before you really understand the intricacies of each specialty you're considering. Anyway, this is the fun stuff to figure out I guess!
It looks like the intern year varies from specialty to specialty:
http://www.uhhospitals.org/case/services/orthopaedics/medical-education/residency/residency-program
http://neurosurgery.stanford.edu/education/Introduction.html
http://www.utsouthwestern.edu/educa...ning/residency-program/program-structure.html
I believe in the past, all (or most surgery programs) had similar intern year rotations. But it seems to be different now.

Matched most strongly with gen surg and medical genetics, interesting. But it really is hard to quantify these qualities they ask for lol...

I'm with you @Ace Khalifa, I'm thinking it's time for me to send an update... My one interview isn't until December. I'm on hold at 2 schools, small pooled at another and dead silence from the rest (minus one rejection).

I just don't know if my update is worthy, I mentioned in a lot of secondaries (in regards to how I'm spending my application year) that I was auditioning for a professional choir and what it would mean if I got in etc... well I got in and it has been AMAZING! Additionally I have a new-ish (more like a step up from current volunteer position) volunteer experience to add which will continue to matriculation (provided I get in somewhere). Is that enough? It's hard to add extra-curriculars and updates when you're working full-time :( in a non-research field.

I think that's great! Medical schools are always looking for talented folks and that first one sounds phenomenal. I say SEND THE UPDATE

Haha! What's interesting about it? I'm excited to see what happens! I wish I could experience every single field... I'm worried I'll miss out on the one that would have been my favourite!

Such a refreshingly UNIQUE mix of top choices! Medical Genetics?? Somehow I think that totally fits, in addition to the other 5 dozen specialties that you ranked >85% in ;) :D

I don't phone SDN so I wouldn't know :p

SEND THE UPDATE!!! It's been a while since your last one and the cycle is still young so future updates might have a real impact! Someone at my Mayo interview asked if the school liked updates post-interview (heck, I sent mine pre-interview and ANOTHER one post-interview ;)) and Dr. Romanski and Gina said "Yes!" This is especially helpful I think since the re-review all applicants on hold at every meeting. I like to remember how @alwaysangel was so persistent and ended up at her dream school! Check out her MDApps for details on the process. If you need any more convincing I know you have a ton of amazing choices on your plate but please send another update/LOI for *my* sake  My experience at Mayo would be 1,000,000 more amazing with you around!!!

Let me tell you another thing that oddly reeks of dating... choosing a lab to spend the next ~5 years in... :p  :bang:

This is my first post in the class of 2019 as a real life class of 2019er!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! So happy for you!!

@spockprime, @No Limits, @Ace Khalifa, @hellanutella, @demystifie, @noolsy, @MSTPhopeful2015 (¿Donde estas?) and anyone else interested in surgery:
Please learn as much as possible about the resident operative autonomy and case load at surgical programs when you're in med school. Various websites (SDN, orthogate, and Uncle Harvey) have confirmed that some programs are clearly better than others in this regard. And obviously, it's in your best interest to be super well-trained during your residency. Some programs consistently get rave reviews online when it comes to operative training. Ortho at Vanderbilt is an example :D
taylor-swift-2.png

So there's likely some truth to this "internet acclaim."

But regardless, it looks like this takes some level of detective work during the med school years. And from what I've heard, ppl aren't always honest about this topic on the interview trail (and you can only rotate at so many places). So it's better to adequately assess programs sooner than later. You can ask med students, residents, attendings, and the internet (although be cautious with the information you get from the web). Obviously, operative autonomy/caseload is not critical at the moment, but its relevance will only increase as you approach your rotations.

Since I'm not yet applying, I still have plenty of time to investigate thoracic surgery programs

Hey, you never know! One of my interviewers – probably the most awesome one I've met yet – recounted how he was sold on EM (had been a paramedic for 20+ years) and put OB/GYN as his last choice. Fast-forward to his "throwaway" OB/GYN rotation and he loves it. Eventually becomes a maternal/fetal medicine specialist.

Don't know if this will happen to me with family med, but that's why I want to go into this with an open mind.

Also: isn't the silence from Sinai maddening?

The intern years do look pretty different, but have quite a bit of variety within the rotations, so at least you get exposure to a lot of different cases. Plus, I guess this is a way to get straight to your main specialty interest while still training to operate within a wide array of services. Thank you for the great advice, too! This is definitely something to keep in mind, and better to have some notions (even if vague for now) of good programs that fit our interests and lifestyles sooner rather than later. Plus, it's so much fun to learn more about all of the programs, so this is pleasurable research! Ha, you're so on top of things that when they ask you "where do you see yourself in 10-20 years?" next year you'll be able to list your exact hopeful residency program. Thank you again - very wise words, and this kind of information will only grow in usefulness as the years pass! We'll have to put our heads together in several years when the match comes up (eerie that that isn't as far away as we imagine), as I'm sure by then we'll have good information to pass on and you'll have picked out the perfect thoracic surgery program and will have even more good advice!

On an unrelated note, remember I said that I was going to gift my friend a tswift calendar for his birthday? Well, in addition to that and his main presents, I made his birthday card look like the 1989 album cover with his initials and birth year instead, and of course there is a polaroid-framed hipster-ish photograph on the front. I even put a song list on the back, except each "song" is an inside joke. I've been waiting to get to the computer all day so that I could share this with you, because I had a feeling you'd really like this idea! I couldn't find singing cards, but I think this turned out even better and it looks surprisingly authentic.

My guess is, they want to make very, very sure they don't mess up such an important message. Not after what happened on their namesake, at least in Mel Brooks' telling:

tumblr_inline_mr6wd35O3D1qz4rgp.gif

I can make an embarrassing amount of Taylor cards with the stuff I have at home.
(And it's not like I spend $11 bucks to buy the British Vogue when she graces the cover :oops:)
rs_634x833-141001044718-634.Taylor-Swift-British-Vogue-JR-10114.jpg

So yeah, it's great to ask the more relevant questions when exploring residency programs. I can't imagine starting a career as a physician without being adequately trained. And I'm not saying that this is the norm, but it appears that some programs do have deficiencies.

I need to shadow a thoracic surgeon  (especially after that survey). I haven't given it much thought (I'm more of an ortho and neuro fanatic), but it does seem appealing!

Keep me posted about your surgical interests while you're in med school. I'll happily help you (and anyone else) with the detective work!!

Soooo....for some reason, the fact that I am going to medical school still hasn't fully hit me yet. I'm so excited to have two acceptances, but I always pictured basically crying myself into a puddle after getting that first acceptance and 3 weeks later it's still not resonating. What gives?!? I'm so so so grateful but just waiting for reality to hit. Anyone else with a similar experience?

Edit: I realize now that a month ago, I would've punched myself if I read a complain like this hahah

Seconded. We've worked for this since high school/earlier for this moment...and it has resulted in something tangible. I feel like it was so easy to get caught in school and applying and volunteering and research with the ultimate goal of getting into medical school (and benefitting humanity along the way, of course )...even dreaming of this moment. We all have days when we feel down, and unmotivated...days when we question if what we're pursuing is even a possibility...the highs and lows of undergrad and beyond...the roller coaster of a ride this application cycle has been already...

And now we're here. We made it. Validated with a phone call/email/snail mail. At the same time, it just doesn't seem real. The only way I can describe it is that it is beyond words how much this opportunity means to me (and I'm sure all of you as well)...and slowly, I'm beginning to realize, that the journey has just begun. We asked for the chance, were accepted to answer the call, and now must step up to the plate. I think reality will hit soon. In all honesty, I'm enjoying this moment of limbo...before the whirlwind of medical training actually begins.

One of my favorite videos that helped me this interview cycle was this: and he says this (more of less)..."once you get into medical school...it's not about you anymore...it's all about your patients." I think he hit the nail on the head.

Once again, it's a huge congratulations to us all who have gotten in so far, and I know that many others reading this will hear back soon. Regardless of how real this seems or not, it is an incredible feeling of humility and privilege-- there are people out there who think that we will be fantastic physicians...and we can't let them down, nor our future patients either :)

Not gonna lie, this just made me tear up and definitely helped reality start to seep in. Thanks for mirroring my experience and congratulations to you on your acceptance- you are clearly going to be a thoughtful and empathetic physician.

Ps, RDubz is even more amazing in real life. Only person I've ever met who can things like "open your heart" without sounding cliche or trite. I might've watched that video a few times for interview prep too :)

Thank you for the kind words friend, congrats to you as well =)

Jealous that you've met Mr. Wallace =D

I think thoracic surgery is amazing. It's just funny to me because a few years ago, a thoracic resident specifically told me to not go into the field. He actually recommended ortho :D It's a tough choice. You get a few months (at most) of rotations and your entire career is decided. Read this profile:

I sometimes fear that this will happen to me

As far as spine stuff goes, ortho spine and neuro do similar cases. Obviously ortho isn't doing brain stuff, but they do pretty much the same thing in terms of 'basic' spine procedures: Fusions, discectomies, etc.
