Hello all,

I am a new faculty member in the Clinical Psychology PhD program at the University of Southern Mississippi. I found this forum to be helpful as I was coming up through the ranks, and now that I am looking for grad students of my own, this seemed like a good place to find potential students. I study externalizing and risk-taking during adolescence and young adulthood, with a particular interest in environmental factors associated with these problems (like stress or family issues) and interventions that can be implemented in community settings to reduce risky behavior.

Here's my faculty page: http://www.usm.edu/clinical-psychology/faculty/nora-charles-phd (contains links to our program information and my lab website)

I know this is a little unorthodox, but it's worth it if it helps me find the right students and build a strong lab. My contact information is on the page, so feel free to email me if you think we're a good match!

It's nice to see solid programs soliciting here instead of our usual diploma mills peddling their wares. For all of you potential applicants out there, this is a very solid program. Perfect accredited internship match rates as well as 100% EPPP pass rate. Good place to consider if your interests match up with one of the faculty here.

Let me also add in my respect for USM. It is a really strong program with a lot of up-and-coming junior faculty!

With permission from DrCharles to also post in this thread, I would also like to encourage you to consider Mississippi State University. http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/gradprograms/clinical/index.php We are a fairly new program that is not yet APA accredited due to us not being eligible as of yet, but we have students applying for internship this year and we plan on submitting our self-study to APA in the spring, which is the soonest we will be eligible to apply for accreditation. Thus, although we are not yet accredited, we are actively working toward it. If you, or any of your mentors, would like to learn more about our accreditation efforts please feel free to email Dr. Michael Nadorff at [email protected].

We currently have eight clinical psychology faculty members, and all of them are planning on accepting students for next year. Below is a brief description of each and a link to their websites:

Dr. Kevin Armstrong studies assessment and diagnostic issues in relation to ADHD. He also has a strong interest in the misuse of stimulant medication. http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/people/staff.php?id=715&itk=7ea49b441fa0f3edbcef1be1311e99e8

Dr. Mitchell Berman studies the interaction of aggression, suicide, and alcohol/drug use. He is also the department head and serves as a collaborator on several grants within the department. http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/people/staff.php?id=714&itk=c5931edc04d952ddb381bcc0177b39a8

Dr. Kristina Hood studies attitude change and persuasion, HIV prevention, and promoting positive health outcomes in under-served populations. She is the primary investigator on a grant investigating an HIV intervention in African American women funded by NIDA. http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/people/staff.php?id=723&itk=cb0ca2c742c40a85a9f1a6b27c25ef71

Dr. Jared Keeley studies clinical cognition (how mental health professionals think in relation to diagnosis and case conceptualization), the classification of psychopathology, and the scholarship of teaching. He has active research funds from the World Health Organization (WHO). http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/people/staff.php?id=724&itk=d619cb24b50fd4201a00b3c742a9d7b5

Dr. Cliff McKinney investigates how parenting leads to problematic adjustment in emerging adults. He also is the PI on a grant awarded from the Jackson VA medical center to provide telehealth mental health services to Veterans in rural Mississippi. http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/people/staff.php?id=726&itk=bfccb07ad3cfe42046a3f4198b9c41b0

Dr. Michael Nadorff studies sleep, suicide, and aging. Students interested in any one of these topics would fit well in his lab. He also serves as the DCT for the program. He is the PI of an active SAMHSA suicide prevention grant and collaborates on Dr. Winer's R15 grant. http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/people/staff.php?id=730&itk=3941f1171e532646a52260c28e9729fb

Dr. Arazais Oliveros studies child welfare and prevention of maltreatment, parental mental health and its influence on the parent-child relationship, parenting's influence on emotional regulation, and attachment and its influence on conflict and resilience. Dr. E. Samuel Winer studies cognitive biases with psychopathology, reward valuation and anhedonia, and suicidal behavior. He is PI on a grant investigating subchance perception and psychopathology funded by NIMH and collaborates on Dr. Nadorff's SAMSHA grant. http://www.psychology.msstate.edu/people/staff.php?id=735&itk=46572ac89dae85de97eefa86c4887407

Thank you for considering our program!

I have also heard good things about USM's program.
Good luck to both your programs getting going and getting APA accred. I am glad this thread exists on SDN.

Quick note: Per their website, USM has actually been continuously-accredited since 1979.

MSU's program is newer, but in my personal opinion, I would be surprised if accreditation is not granted expeditiously once eligible.
