Technically no extra training is required to claim you are a cosmetic dentist. All general dentists are trained to do cosmetic procedures. You can definitely make more money since cosmetic procedures are generally more expensive. However, many of the cosmetic procedures are not covered by dental insurance, so you may have a smaller pool of patients.

Just add 'cosmetic' to your signage out front. Gold! Throw a 'super-duper' in there while you're at it. Super-duper dentistry. That's the next big craze.

there is no such thing as "cosmetic dentistry", it is not an official specialty.... there isn't any special training for it either. Theoretically speaking, every graduate dentist IS a cosmetic dentist (because we understand the shape, appearance and function of teeth) so we know how to fix the abnormal to a certain degree to make it more esthetically appealing (keyword = THEORETICALLY)

but in reality, I believe its got an artistic side. not every dentist can perform cosmetic dentistry to the same degree as others (some will always be better ~ especially in those offices that invest in the latest and greatest equipment).... the folks with good skills tend to advertise the "cosmetic" part cause it brings them more business

as far as how much money you make (and Im purely guessing here), it will take years and years of work-of-mouth advertising between patients to finally establish urself as a legitimate "cosmetic" worker ~ by then, you'll make more money than bill gates

120K for a decade? if that's how dentists earn, how do they pay for their rent? and pay for their loans they borrowed when they started their practice?

Think of this way,
if you do filings and cleanings for whole year, yeah...you will not make money
but COSMETIC means "implant" and invisible retainers
it is general dentists' job...to do implant and dentures and such,
it is good to show off your special learning..such as LVI (Las Vegas Institution <- very prestigious dental program for dentists..not for dental students but for DMD and DDS)

If you do little bit of implant, dentures, extractions, flings, cleanings, and such...
you will make at least

$2,000 a day (average) x 24 days (days you work in a month) x 12 month = $576K a year..
but you will probably get 20% of it because you have to pay for your receptionists, dental assistant, and dental lab fees. Also rent for your practice, and tax (you will get more than 20% in reality, but according to economists, small business owners get 30-20% of total profit...so just say 20% to make it the worst-case)
then it is about 115K/year

but this is when I make it pretty small practices
(one implant teeth cost more than $2000+. a denture $1000+, ect)
so, if you are good and have lot of patient, you will make more money

of course, in that 115k, you have to pay your loan, car, house, living expense..
but it is when you are really small and all that.
and focus on $576K/year.....you can increase this number and your income by having more patient

so don't listen to dental students...ask dentists!

and for special CE,
it is good to take those..but it is not specialty...just graduate dental school and go to lot of seminars to learn new things..and do the residency after graduation!!

some practices makes 90k, some 180k, some 1,800,000

Your only concern is money. Every thread you have posted has been about money.

Let me give you some advice for life. If you are good at what you do, and people want the service they will pay you.

You can be an pharmacist, optometrist, chef, dentist, plumber.

If you are the best at what you do, then you will make plenty of cash.

Instead of focusing on the money, you should be working on being the best.

What does that mean? It means rocking your DATs, Rocking your GPAs, going to a "good" dental school.

so if I want to I can make 500k in dentistry sky is the limit?

i don't know.

Are you really good at setting up a viable business model?

Is your dental skill so amazing that you can race through clinicals while others are still on step 1 of a procedure?

The truth is most people are average. That is why we have the the term average. Some people will be amazing dentists and some will be below the average. If you are an amazing dentist, then 500k is possible.

To the OP: If you don't make patient care the foundation of your dental business (and have the training and know-how to deliver that care spectacularly), you'll be left in the dust. True, business acumen is necessary, but for now, rather than speculate, focus on ensuring that your dental skills aren't lacking.
