Does anyone know the cost to open a dental office? Likes chair, tools, x-ray machine, and etc...

The answer, as usual, is it depends.

Location is a big factor... It would obviously be cheaper to open a practice in a rural community than on 5th Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

Equipment can range from frugal, such as second-hand chairs, to the latest stuff from Sirona that costs an arm and a leg. If you are a specialist, equipment cost will also vary as you purchase stuff particular to your specialty (for example, surgical microscopes for endodontists).

How large is the office plays a factor too-- It affects the amount you have to outlay for the equipment.

I've seen numbers ranging from $150,000 to $1 million to open a new dental practice..

I'll take a typical start up in a suburban area as an example.

To uptfit a leased space of say 2200 sq ft which is enough room for 4-5 operatories (That includes stuff like putting walls up, carpet, all the fancy plumbing and wiring, paint, etc. The landlord will usually cover part of this, but I've included what you'll typically pay to get the building ready) = $55K

Architect/contractor/oversight/permits/ = $10K

Attorney fees = $4k ($**#^ lawyers!)

Furnishings and miscellaneous like fax/pencils/toner = $7.5K

Dental supplies (gauze to composite to forceps to...) = $25K

Dental equipment (two operatories worth of x-ray heads/chairs/panorex/curing lights/handpieces/compressor/operatory lights/ sterilizer/etc...) = $100K

Dental software and computers = 15K

Working capital (to pay the bills while you have no patients) = $40K

Grand total around $275K

You could get away for less with used equipment or you could triple it if you went top of the line.

If you want to buy the building/land figure another $3-500K

Being your own boss in the greatest profession = PRICELESS
