Creating a poll

How the hell do you create a poll??? I realize there's a little checkbox at the bottom of the message screen, but when I check it off nothing happens... even after specifying the number of poll options and hitting submit . I realize this is a totally dumb question, but I just can't figure it out. Arrrgg, the perils of being technically challenged!
