Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner puts off medical school to pursue NFL dream

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is a high probability of this Abdullah is a small guy and joique bell has been injury prone. I'm rooting for this guy for sure. I think there is at least one game this year where he is the lead back or at very least splits carries with riddick

I'm as big as a Zach Zenner fan as you'll find and even I'll tell you these expectations are rather absurd.

Since I've started focusing on preseason, I've noticed that there's actually an inverse correlation between people who get personal interest pieces like this written about them and people who actually make the active roster. Every year for every team the fans get excited about someone who has a very good preseason. They frequently end up tucked away on the practice squad. Maybe they get called up for an injury. Maybe they get poached. RBs not household names are kind of regarded as a dime a dozen in the NFL. after Tuesdays cuts the streets will be full of guys with actual NFL experience. Rarely do these undrafted unproven guys displace someone a team has made a bigger investment in. it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

For sure. Tim Tebow is an annual example of this. Remember Zach Sudfeld? There are big names like this every year that then go straight to oblivion within weeks. The only reason I'm really focusing on this is I do think there is a chance Zenner still wants to pursue his dream 2 years from now and the SD Dean of Admission basically came out and said we don't grant deferrals more than 2 years(and he seemed somewhat hesitant to even give more than a year). There is also an outside possibility that Zenner's love for the game is so much that even if the NFL doesn't work out he tries and takes a stab at the CFL(not particularly likely but who knows really here).

As you say, careers are, on average, short and one has to figure out what to do with the rest of one's life. I recall a professional/Olympic medalist figure skater who skated long enough to bank a set amount of money which set her up to pursue a career in medicine. You've got to make it a means to an end rather than an end in itself, I think, if you really have a passion for the practice of medicine. If the passion isn't there, you might as well go to law school or open a car dealership or whatever after your final season.

What I worry about is this decision was already made to some extent and he's said alot about what he really desires and thinks by already showing a willingness to pursue the NFL. There are others like Myron Rolle who simply stopped at football after college and made the decision to commit to medicine. The NFL and medicine are honestly two of the biggest time commitments you could find in any field. The fact he wants to dabble with both and didn't make a decision one way when there was a clear chance to might say something about his desire to pursuing medicine perhaps not being as burning as a guy like Myron Rolle(emphasis on might we really don't know but its possible). You would know alot better than me about whether or not another MD school would be willing to take him after he already turned down an MD acceptance if he wants to try medicine in 5 years, but that could be another obstacle.

But we will see. All this is speculation now and it can all change ridiculously fast in a second.

Meh,
We all know some med school dean will like the diversity a former NFL player brings. If he ever suits up for a game some med school will take him. He can take a few years and still get into a SD equivalent.

Fair enough.

We're talking about an undrafted free agent with zero NFL experience here... do you realize how astronomical the odds of this are?

I'm just saying if you're filling out your roster with guys like Zenner chances are you won't be winning very many fantasy matchups.

As much as I like Tim Tebow he won't be starting QB1 for me...

I would agree with you, but this happened last year with the same team. Bell and Bush went down, Riddick is more of a specialist than a 3 down player. George Winn (an undrafted free agent rookie) came off the bench and played reasonably well. Yes astronomical odds, but not out of the realm of possibility.

I think that's enough analysis of the 4th string running back spot for the Detroit Lions on a pre-medical forum for one night.

Only took 4 weeks and it looks like it'll be the Zach Zenner show tonight

He'll definitely be getting some carries with the starter out, very interested to see how it goes.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/depth/_/name/det/detroit-lions
Lol he's not even on the depth chart dude :D

Even with Bell out Abdullah is gonna shoulder the load (which he's been doing anyways lol) and the other 2 guys will do short yardage and goal line. Idk what Zenner's role is, haven't ever heard of the kid before SDN.

Joique Bell is definitely out.

The Lions have been using 3 RBs all year basically, Abdullah, Theo Riddick, Joique Bell. Now basically Zenner steps into Riddick's role and Riddick had 8 catches last week. I was going off a report from Rotoworld and some others that there's a chance Zenner could definitely get involved this week.

Even a simple google search of Zach Zenner's name reveals articles like this that make it seem like he could be a factor tonight
http://www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2015/10/03/detroit-lions-zach-zenner/73274574/

Either way it's just another reason to spend another Monday Night procrastinating lol

Zenner both got some carries and was providing pass protection during crunch time tonight.

As an avid football fan unfortunately I don't see this kid needing to put off medical school for too much longer, because his chances of ever making a 53 man roster are remote at best.

My view exactly, he has no chance at realizing his NFL dream.

This is nothing more than a guy trying to live out his dream to play in the NFL as long as possible before realizing that a) he's not good enough b) that life in the NFL sucks if you aren't good. Nobody wants to spend more than 1-2 years bouncing around on practice squads just to play special teams, regardless of how much they think they might love the idea at first .

He's unfortunately destined to spend the year on the practice squad of Detroit or some other team. A good preseason outing against backups usually translates to this -- his numbers aren't that uncommon during second preseason games against second and third stringers. And that likely won't be enough income to pay for all four years of med school. If he improves by next year he may have a real decision to make.

Lol I really hope he's on SDN reading this thread.

Freeman literally handed me a loss last week, and did the same to my brother this week. The silver lining is we're Falcons fans! Woo!

Oh good! A thread combining the two things that have added up to most of the frustrations in my life: Medical education, and the Detroit Lions!

I'm actually disappointed in you all for not bringing up Laken Tomlinson, Detroit's first round pick. OT out of Duke who wants to go to med school to be a neurosurgeon after he's done playing. Thankfully he didn't choose a specialty that requires all that much thinking.

Zenner actually wasn't half bad last night. For some reason Detroit's O-line can't block for sh-t this season and Abdullah is more of a finesse back so a guy like Zenner who can plow through people helps.

If there's a more pathetic excuse for an offensive coordinator in the NFL than Joe Lombardi, I've yet to see it.

Steve Young would know, especially since he sustained quite a few concussions during his career...Honestly, I don't think football is a good career choice for anyone.

Hey Jimmy! Remember that education you got at Notre Dame?

Thing was last night's game maybe wasn't even in top 3 most disappointing Lions moments............of the past 12 months. And they are coming off their most successful season in a long time!

I wasn't even mad when it happened. I mostly just said "wow" about 12 times until Ms. Ox asked me what the hell was going on.

The ironic thing is that Austin seems to have the defense working well enough that Detroit will win some games this season, but the O-line is such a disaster that I actually miss Dominic Raiola.

Lions gonna Lion.

That Matthew Stafford contract extension........oooooof...talk about just lighting money on fire.

Bottom line is that team was built around Megatron and their defensive line. Well Suh and Fairley are gone and Megatron is starting to slow down. The hope was by the time this happened Stafford would be able to carry the team a little like top QB's do when the roster goes through a transition. That sure is not going to be happening. Dude looks exactly like he did coming out of college in 2009; huge arm, has no idea what to do with it.

I'm a Stafford apologist. He's never be Aaron Rodgers, but I'll take him over Cutler or Bridgewater (for now at least). There aren't many QBs in the NFL who will be successful with the offensive line playing THAT bad. When he's had time to throw, he's been actually pretty good this season.

FYI. Zenner out for the season after surgery from 4-5 broken ribs. He got rocked on what was otherwise a great run.

IMO Stafford is wildly overrated. Definition of mediocrity.

Collapsed lungs on top of it. Brutal. Wonder if this is the last time he decides he ever wants to be on a football field and instead he simply decides to to pursue his medical dream after an experience this traumatic and debilitating.

Meh. I disagree.

He has one good receiver and a ****ty O-line. Double team Megatron and pass rush the **** out of Stafford. It'd make any quarterback look mediocre.

The thing is a ton of top QB's have issues with their supporting cast.

Peyton Manning's offensive line was trash for years. Same with Aaron Rodgers and they didnt have a running game for a while. Brady went years with no receivers and this offensive line the past few years isn't anything to write home about. Roethlisberger never had an offensive line and his skill position players were pretty meh until a few years ago. Romo's supporting cast was pretty bad until the past 2 years. Phillip Rivers never has any help outside of Antonio Gates. Russell Wilson is playing behind a college caliber offensive line right now with trash receivers. For Matt Ryan it's basically been Julio Jones and a dumpster fire since 2012.

The good QB's find a way to overcome these things. It's the same old thing with Stafford. He's the same QB as the one who came into the league. Makes the same stupid mistakes and misses too many open receivers. When you look at why the Lions are always falling apart every year down the stretch, look no further than Stafford. And he's had a first ballot hall of famer freak of nature Megatron bailing him out this whole time. Now, when Megatron starts slowing down a little bit, you see what happens to Stafford. He really isn't much better than someone like Ryan Fitzpatrick at this point. He's basically just stealing money from the Lions; about 20-25 other QB's in the league could perform just like he has except at like 1/50th of the price.

You can say that but far worse QBs than Stafford have made the Superbowl. A team like the Bills could only wish they could have a salary cap suck problem for a QB like stafford. There's a reason

So many premeds with so many wrong opinions.

So if you believe having an MD gives you more authority for speaking about Matthew Stafford and football let's hear what insight you have then. What do you disagree with. Better question is how is someone with your title still being the sucker who falls for Matthew Stafford and the Lions
