I googled and wikipedia, so if anyone has the same question, here is the answer

my Comlex step 3 score = 428, mean = 500, SD = 120

428 - 500 / 120 = -0.6 (my z score)

http://www.acposb.on.ca/conversion.htm

based on above table, I score in 27.4 percentile

But if I look at my 2 dgit score 79, Mean 80, SD 4
79 - 80 / 4 = -0.25
Based on this Im in the 40th %

look on your score report.. both usmle and comlex say the two digit score is just that. It is NOT a percentage. It's just a conversion of the three digit score.

I think he knows that, but you can still extrapolate your percentil score based on your relationship to the mean.

Informer, I would bet that you are around the 30th percentile, because of the steep drop off in the bell curve near the mean. Admittedly you are only 0.6 SD below it, but the picture is more descriptive. Still, you passed.

And this is why the comlex 2 digit score "extrapolation" is BS - if your 3 digit score gives you a certain %ile, your 2 digit score should do the same. Instead, they do some voodoo magic and come up with some asinine number to report. sigh

For the OP - yes, you did that right.
