Is it frowned upon to do a PhD in the lab you were a tech (or an undergrad/masters student). Will this really hurt residency/fellowship chances when matching, not having that diverse experience? Thanks all.

This has not been a problem for the few in our program who did it. The residency program does not care much about your research; they are looking for someone who will be a productive member of a patient care team. Fellowship programs will care only slightly more; however, their focus will be on your productivity as a PhD researcher, not on the fact that you worked in the lab before.
