I've been trying to go through the forum but it seems like most posts are very old. What are some easier TY programs located in good cities. Not too picky about geographic location as long as it is a bigger city. Also does anyone know any easy prelim programs.

You may have better luck in the internship year forum.

Any transitional year is usually easy compared to a prelim year. Most programs have a website that shows you the curriculum and how many elective months you get (usually of your choosing of what's available on site). That being said, I've heard match has gotten quite tight for transitionals (that's always been the case) but also for preliminary years as well.

I have heard of Intermountain (in Utah, supposedly u can go skiing at 10 AM when your clinical duties are over for some rotations..), Resurrection (Chicago), MacNeal (Chicago), Gundersen (La Crosse), Roger Williams (Rhode Island, prelim med) and a certain Iowa program (that also comes with free housing)

Are TY and prelim programs pretty regionally based? I really want to get out of the southeast, would LOVE to go to a big city, especially for a relatively easy TY

The MSK program in a NYC seems to be pretty coveted as well. That may be because of location through. I believe it's pretty wards intensive.

I know someone who completed their TY at MSK. By all accounts, it is very wards intensive and they work HARD. You're correct in that the location drives the competitiveness. The only TY (to my knowledge) in Manhattan.

The two in Virginia (well, one now) have historically been some of the best in the country. I've heard stories about Carilion and it sounds like it was a magical place. I've also spoken with someone who did their TY at Riverside, and it sounded quite amazing.

I guess I don't know too much about intern year and transitional years but how many elective months is considered to be a laid back year? And are the ward months at most places generally similar in terms of hours and how about for the electives? I know there aren't any broad across the board statements that can be made because there will always be one TY that has ward hours from 9-12 and some TY that has electives that go from 6-8 but I am just curious in general.

Also, how reliable/realistic are the hours that are listed on the Frieda website. I noticed for some Prelim IM programs there are hours in the 70-80 range per week on average and then others that are around 50. Is this based on any real stats or whatever the program feels like putting up?

My year at IMC in Utah was awesome. It's not "cush" in the sense of hours or responsibilities but it was a good place to learn a bit of medicine and surgery in a very benign and happy atmosphere. Also, my two months working at the ski clinic at Brighton ski resort for my electives were some of the best in my life.

When I was interviewing a few years back, the TY program in Spokane was by far the cushiest I encountered. Low # of medicine months, low hour rotations, free food all day, highest salary. It was actually kind of weird since the couple of residents I had dinner with constantly talked about how little they worked...
