Employment after residency

I'm just curious as to what type of numbers everyone use when trying to negotiate salary? What are some good resources I can use? Also, how hard is it to become a hospitalist?

My lawyer did all the negotiating. He does a lot of physician contacts and new what the average pay was for the area for physicians right out of residency. He also knew what other places were offering because he did a lot in our area and state.
