For Canadians who are open to the idea of practicing in the US one day (given the horrible job market in many specialties here) is USMLE step1 the only exam needed to work in the US on a 'good' H1B visa? I've done some searching into this, but I was hoping for a bit of clarification that I wasn't missing things.

I'm willing to write Step 1 in med school to keep options open, but I am planning on doing residency here. I realize this isn't really feasible for things like neurosurg, but for gen surg, for example, would this approach be ok?

You will need to take all steps of the USMLE if you want to practice in the US.
But that's essentially the only major hurdles I would need to plan for in advance? I.e. writing step 1 after med2

Um. No. You need to complete a residency in the US as well.
The OP is Canadian, and will presumably have a Canadian residency.

Most Canadian residencies are accepted in the U.S., not all, but most.

I'm Canadian, attending a canadian medical school so it's not considered IMG in the same senses that someone from any other place would be

Do you know how gen surg works? I'm a bit lost because of their different prelim year stuff in the US

Which Canadian residencies are not accepted in the US? Could you link me?
