If you're interested in Berkeley, go to one of the events for prospective students. I went last year, and it gave me a chance to meet current students and professors, as well as to get advice on what would be important in my application. Specifically, the pre-application advising session was helpful in sussing out what to address, and the Public Health Conference was a good time to meet people.

Look for similar events at other schools, and make sure to get the dates down.
(Also, if you can't rsvp to Berkeley's pre-app advising session, feel free to crash it like I did.)
