I was curious if there was anyone else using these? I took the first one last night at a busy starbucks (to begin to aclimate myself to the "be prepared for anything" test climate) and I got rocked. I scored a 5!! :scared:. Its okay though because I knew verbal was going to be the hardest. I was curious if anyone else using these tests could post their scores and or advice (I know there was a thread a while back, but that was for the April exam and I'm in need of encouragment and advice from the august takers. Thanks

took the 5/19/2012 test and got a 6 in VR. i only got one 6 on a FL practice test and it was kaplan's full length #1 (first test i ever took). i bought EK 101 verbal passages after receiving my score and have done 3 verbal tests so far; i did the passages independently while keeping time of each passage and reviewing every question, right and wrong. timing is not an issue and when adding up the times for each passage i still have 5+ minutes remaining. my scores are as follows:

(6/21/2012) warm up: 10/17
(6/26/2012) EK #1: 23/40 (7)
(6/27/2012) EK #2: 26/40 (8)
(6/28/2012) EK #3: 27/40 (8)
(6/29/2012) Kaplan Verbal Test #12: 31/40 (10)
(7/1/2012) EK #4: 34/40 (11) - i like this trend going on :)))))))
(7/9/2012) AAMC #3 Verbal: 28/40 (9)
(7/13/2012) EK #5: 24/40 (7) (the ****? all the ones i got wrong were a choice between a vague answer and their supposed "right" answer lol)
(7/14/2012) EK #6: 31/40 (10) (^ was a fluke.. i knew i was getting better at verbal lol)
(7/17/2012) EK #7: 29/40 (9)
(7/18/2012) AAMC #9 Verbal: 31/40 (10)
(7/20/2012) EK #8: 25/40 (7)
(7/22/2012) EK #9: 26/40 (8)
(7/23/2012) AAMC #4 Verbal: 29/40 (9)
(7/24/2012) EK #10: 32/40 (10)
(7/25/2012) EK #11: 24/40 (7)
(7/26/2012) AAMC #5 Verbal: 30/40 (10)

I'll update my scores in a couple weeks, as i will be doing some later kaplan verbal section tests and a kaplan full length as well and will be going on vacation for a week (i might bring my EK book with me lol). im training for a 10+ by 8/4/2012 test. good luck fellow mcaters!

i started ek 12 too and have noticed that test 11 and so far test 12 are complete bs.

EK3 ..8 (26)
EK4...6 (22)
EK5...7 (24)
EK6...9 (28) ...I hope this trend continues.
EK7...6 (21)
EK8...6 (22)
EK9..10(30)...Ecstatic about this score. Maintaining an average of 9 in the remaining 5 tests is my ultimate priority. I am starting to look at the question stem more closely and I think it makes a huge difference.

EK10..8 (26)...Mehhh.....Back to square 1.

kaplan wants you to use their method of mapping so they use a lot of detail questions, but i have taken one of the tests recently and it was within my average scores.

I also recommend not using Kaplan's method. It is pure crap.

Their practice test scores are pretty close to the real thing though, much more than EK scores. But EK is better pratice.

I jumped 3-4 points by just switching from my contacts to my glasses which were a more recent prescription. I know this won't help everyone but it doesn't hurt to check when the last time you updated your prescription. Mine were 3 years out of date. Once I switched to my glasses, my speed went up and so did my scores.

Had been mostly using TPRH Workbook:

Took me a while to get used to the language but I ended strongly:

TPRH Verbal Workbook

Overall 30 Passages 164/201 overall 30 passages - 81% (10)
Last 6 Passages (new approach/mindset) 37/39- 95% (13)

I still have a few more TPRH Verbal Passages but decided to start using EK 101s.

EK 2: 31/40 (10)
EK 3: 32/40 (10)

Is there anyone that has scored consistently really high on EK 101 (12/13+)?.

Due to the sheer number of ambiguous answers, I feel like even if you are strong in VR you are pretty much capped at that 10-12 range. I haven't combed through this thread yet though so I could be wrong...

I've only got the first edition of EK 101 but here are my scores:

#1: 33/60 = 6
#2: 38/60 = 8
#3: 43/60 = 9
#4: 37/60 = 8
#5: 41/60 = 9
#6: 40/60 = 8
#7: 40/60 = 8
#8: 49/60 = 11 (don't know how but never got this high again :(
#9: 44/60 = 9
#10: 37/60 = 8
#11: 42/60 = 9

Looks like I'll most likely get an 8 or 9 seeing how my average is 8.45? I'm so close to a 10 on some occasions just a couple more correct but it's hard...

This must be an older version of EK101...My EK 101 VR has only 40 questions per test.

I've got the older version too, but my scores so far:

EK1: 45/60 (10)
EK2: 45/60 (10)
EK3: 50/60 (11)

My test is in 3 weeks though and I'm aiming for 12-13. Looks good so far.

You guys might want to check out PanRoasted's thread on his verbal method: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=936176.

A couple of days ago I was asking if anyone knew of a method to move from the 10 range to 12/13+. I had been stuck at 10 with some 11s for the longest time using TPRH hyperlearning verbal workbook and in my first couple of EK 101 tests:

TPRH: 164/201 overall 30 passages - 81% (10)

EK 2: 31/40 (10)
EK 3: 32/40 (10)

Just finished scoring EK 4 and moved up to a 12!

EK 4: 35/40 (12)

The best thing about PanRoasted's strategy was with my timing as I felt more comfortable throughout the exam. I had close to 25 mins left to complete 2 passages even after starting off slowly trying to get used to the new approach. I recommend people who are struggling or even if you just want to move up to that next range of scores to take a look at PanRoasted's post. It will take a few more tests to see if this really works but from early results and just from the comfort level in taking the exam, this approach certainly looks promising. :)

WTF is going on with EK 12, I mean all the history passages, **** me srsly, so dense to read through and written so annoyingly. Was I the only one that thinks this? Maybe I am just tired...

So ive also been using Ek 101 and i started out with 6 and 7's....but now i can always count on making an 8 or 9....usually i am always one question away from a 9 lately. But i do not understand when i take the AAMC practice test i do horrible and have no flow with scores....i have received 8, 5, and even a 3 ( which is just annoying) ....I do not know if it is because i feel extra stress or what but it is very frustrating!!! i take them both in the same environment and timed. The one i made a 3 one i received a 9 in PS and 11 in bio! so overall disappointed in the score but only due to the horrible verbal....i have done many EK i am on 11 now and therefore almost finished......i also have Kaplan verbal but i have heard that they are not as good as EK.......Any advice will be amazing im just hoping on the actual mcat i do not make this 3 and make the average i make with EK Thanks :)

5 - 9 (29)
6 - 10 (31)
7- 8 (26)
8 - 11 (34)
9 - 11 (34)

I find that I tend to do better whenever my head is clear, such as right after a nap or something versus doing one after studying all day... so hopefully my head will still be clear after PS and writing :D

Also, is it just me or is anyone finding the AAMCs to be MUCH harder than EK? I feel like half the time the AAMC passages are in another language, whereas with EK every passage has been thoroughly interesting to read and the questions are fair and pretty straightforward, and I can understand where I've gone wrong. AAMC on the other hand...

No you aren't the only one who thought that! I thought exactly the same thing! Because of this stupid test, I was doubting the improvements I made in VR so far (3 months). So I decided to ignore it all together.

I still felt a subtle difference from the AAMC VR sections. After I started taking the AAMC practice tests, I actually stopped doing EK 101 VR work. The EK perspective seemed about 10 degrees off center and was leading me to interpret passages in ways that differed from the AAMC rationales and perspective. Of course, your mileage may vary, but I found it helpful to start getting good at VR with EK (got me from nowhere to a score of about 11 on my first AAMC practice test), then fine-tuned my "technique" with the AAMC tests. I worked up to 13 on the AAMC tests and got a 13 on the 5/2 administration. After transitioning to the AAMC tests, the EK answers/rationales just felt "off," so I left them alone.

Good comment and good of you to come and share this perspective.

i feel the same about AAMC ( i posted above ) i do fine with EK and understand the ones i miss and then when i do the AAMC ones i feel lost almost! So im just worried and do not want the AAMC score to be a reflection of my score on actual test day and my EK score is!

so i don't have scores but i have a quick question -

does anyone know what the difference is between the 2002 version and the newer, 2008 version of the 101 passages? I looked up the reviews on amazon and the 2002 version has a better review but i don't want to purchase the outdated version if there is a significant difference between the older and newer version in preparing for the MCAT.

I averaged 9-10 on both verbal examkracker and aamc TIMED. I got 6 both times on the real MCAT (my BS, PS scores are higher on the real thing)

Just to update: I have taken the exam few weeks ago. Passages of VR were more readable, and questions were straightforward. However after reading the massacre that is 7/6 MCAT, I have come to the conclusion that easy passage does not equal for better score. It seems as if they were disguised. I am convinced that my test will get the same gory treatment that those before me experienced: unbelievable sharp drop in VR.

Now excuse me while I retreat to the dark corner in my room, hugging my batman figurine.

Thank god others hate EK 12! I was like WTF!!! I got a 5 on it after EK 10 I got a 10 and EK 11 I got an 8 (tired...)

Terrible ass passages!

I don't get why everyone does so well on EK101 yet bad on the AAMC...I took half of my AAMC FLs and I've been averaging 9's and 10's, but when I take EK101 I get bloody 7's and 8's. Kinda freaks me out lol

Oh well...for all it's worth, it's good practice.

My average on EK101 was lower than my AAMC average as well. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, AAMC is far more indicative of the real thing because, well, it is the real thing. Even though SDN's consensus is that the AAMCs are easier than the real exam, it also seems to be SDN's consensus that VR is the exception and that there's not much of a difference between the VR you see on the AAMC practice exams and the VR you see on the real thing.

I think EK 101 is pretty good preparation. I ragequit after the first 11 because I wasn't seeing any improvement:
1 - 10
2 - 9
3 - 13
4 - 12
5 - 10
6 - 10
7 - 12
8 - 11
9 - 12
10 - 10
11 - 9
And I just took AAMC #3 and scored a 12 on verbal. I had stopped doing verbal for a couple weeks before taking it, but I think I'll start back up with BR verbal.

similar here, i haven't really seen that much improvement, my scores have been 10, 11, 13, 10, 11, 10, 12, 11, 12, and for aamc 10, 11, 12, and 12. would love to break into the 13-14 zone but not sure if that will ever happen.

I feel the same way I am in the middle of EK 12 and omg...it is brutal. Glad to see I am not the only one who thought this.

EK10..8 (26)...Mehhh.....Back to square 1.
EK11...5 (18)...Reality check.
EK12...4 (17)...Now I am relying on luck to see if I can pull a 7 on VR--sad:thumbdown:

EK1: 7
EK2: 9
EK3: 10
EK4: 10
EK5: 10
EK6: 9
EK7: 10

Kinda bummed at lack of improvement. Well, if anything, at least this practice keeps me from slipping. I still wish I can break 11.

ah miss doing verbal. well not really... i averaged a 9 on all of the 101s and got an 11 on the real thing. just make sure you take your scores in this book with a grain of salt.

So My average is lower than expected it was a 7, I thought it was an 8. I am going to get a verbal tutor. I brought another copy of ek 101 and I am planning to redo it during dec-jan.
Here are my scores
1-5
2-6
3-8
4-6
5-7
6-8
7-9
8-8
9-7
10-9
11-7
12-8
13-5
14-9
For now I am going to continue reading articles daily and doing at least 1 verbal passage a day. All I want in VR on my official MCAT in Jan. is an 8 and I will be happy.

My EK scores were all 7's with a 6, a 9 and an 8. My AAMC verbal scores were 7's mostly. My real score on verbal was a 10. Conclusion: EK sucks

Just started EK after going through TBR. EK is clearly quite different in the way questions approach the passage, and in the rationale they use for their answers. I finished strong with TBR, getting 32+/40 on the last 3 tests. Then I start the EK warmup passages and get 9/17 and I'm like WTF?!?! Then I realize that the two books seem to take quite a different approach to VR. Using the TBR strategy worked great for TBR passages, but will sink you on the EK passages. I think I'm going to go with PanRoasted's strategy of just reading the damn passage like I normally do.

Pretty disappointed, got an 8 on the first test. How common is 2-point improvement in this VR section in a span of 1.5-2 months?

EK1: 9
EK2: 9
EK3: 10
EK4: 10
EK5: 11
EK6: 10
EK7: 9
EK8: 9
EK10: 10
EK11: 10
EK12: 11
EK13: 10
EK14: 10
TPRH average: 11
AAMC average: 11.5
Actual MCAT: 11

I remember the last two EK tests being ridiculous and full of WTF questions. The first 12 were good, though.

Any tips on improving speed on VR section? I typically only have 4 or 5 minutes left to complete the last passage so I typically bomb it. I also heard that EK 101 passages are shorter than the real deal, so I'm very concerned about my pace at this point. Judgment day isn't until 4/27, but my first EK 101 score was a 7 and I went over by nearly 4 minutes. I'm very disheartened to say the least... :(

Additionally, I find myself flying through the passages but getting tripped up on the questions. That's the main source of my timing issues.

EK1:11
EK2:11
EK3:11
EK4:13
EK5:11
EK6:12
EK7:12
EK8:12
EK9:12

Some pretty funny results all things considered. Curiously as I get better at the tests it seems like some of the questions are getting more confusing.

Here's to hoping I get a 12 on the real thing!

I got a 5 at the start. Then I got 7 and 8s. Got a 9 and at EK10, I'm really excited to get a 10. But then, at EK11, I got a 4. Maybe I'm too tired that day? (I panicked when I got this score.) Then, I got about 8s. Is it a good idea to redo all the tests? I heard it is not very advisable due to some familiarity of the passages and questions.

I'm seeing no progress in EK 101 and it's extremely discouraging. Anyone have any advice for me and my verbal woes? I'm no longer having an issue with timing, but I am getting certain passages ENTIRELY wrong but not because I don't understand the passage as I'm reading it - I simply get the questions wrong...

And some of the supposed answer choices are effing ridiculous.

Could have pulled an 11 on EK 11 had I not ran out of time on the last passage; I was forced to guess on the final two Qs, consequentially missing 'em both. Although I'm definitely seeing *some* improvement in my VR, my performance is still sporadic. Hopefully I can become more consistent in the next 8 weeks and nail a 10+ on the real thing!
