"You little booger if you don't shut up right now..."

-my mother, on the phone Friday

Edit: yeah, just realized this isn't for new acceptances. Ope. Post remains as a warning of what becomes of noobs.

I don't get it...

I don't get it...

This is what my mom said Friday when I called to tell her I got accepted somewhere. I misinterpreted the purpose of like this whole thread, thought it was what people said when you were accepted, but it looks like its for those who are already students... :hilarious: I'm so smooth but not

It's for acceptance reactions too. I think that was its original purpose, actually. But it's deviated a bit, as threads often do.

It is for both. :)

"How long have you wanted to be a vet tech?"

Oh, about 3 years before NEVER.

I also always love the "Oh yea, I love animals and wanted to be a vet when I was little." Like it's something you grow out of.

I get this a lot, too. As well as "That's cute." Like it's only something for little kids to aspire too and not a real and respected profession.

Oh is that a two year program?

...no. It's four years, just like medical school.

Oh well if it's four years why don't you just be a real doctor?

:annoyed:

"Oh you're going to vet school? You must love animals"
Or
"I wanted to do that when I was little but I couldn't stand the idea of killing animals for money"

Love it.

We love killing animals so much we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans to do so.

Every time I catch myself being a bitter grump, I can't help but think "fuuuuu they were right." >.<

Vet school often sucks, but it's also awesome so much of the time that I can't find it in myself to be a grump about it. Especially at the so freaking exciting moment when people get accepted. :D

I feel like most people come in expecting to work really hard, and even if they don't necessarily know the extent of ridiculousness they'll deal with, it's totally doable.

The women from zumba class congratulated me, then gawked over how rich I'm going to be. "In a couple years after graduating, you'll be making more than $200,000!"

Gee, I hope so lady.

ha!

I wish.

Also, on the previous topic - it isn't that vet school should make you bitter, but there are certainly parts of vet school that are not done well and it's ok to be disappointed with those.

And while most expect to work hard, many will tell others that vet school won't be hard for them because they have done x amount of credit hours in undergrad and worked hard so vet school should be status quo for them. They really don't get it (I admit to thinking this way before coming to vet school because you have no frame of reference).

I've been told by my school's academic advisor, who also went to vet school, that its not extremely difficult material, its just a ridiculous amount of information to learn in a short time.

This is my favourite analogy for vet school. It was originally written about human med school, but it still applies: Pancakes Every Morning

True so far for me. We went through 4 'normal' weeks of cardio/respiratory physiology in about 1.5 weeks because of professor scheduling issues. That was ridiculous, but the material wasn't necessarily incredibly difficult. You just didn't have time to master the first 3 hours of material before the next day's 4 hours, and so on. I had to sacrifice some anatomy/histo studying to keep on top of the other stuff. I imagine it would have been easier to swallow if it were more spread out, but you're at the mercy of other people's scheduling needs too.

What they don't really tell you is that for many of the schools, you're taking 7-8 classes with more than a midterm/final. So there's a test almost every week you are in school. Sometimes 2-3. Not including quizzes or assignments/papers.

Or if your school does not test that way, you might have 2 exams, a midterm and a final, (and a scattering of very small percentages of assignments/quizzes) to get the minimum passing grade you need to continue on. And that those exams will be huge because they still have to cover those 7-8 classes.

It doesn't necessarily set you up for failure, but if you really bomb your midterm, you only have your final to really count on getting you to the next quarter, and you have to do that much better on it (for us, anyways). I personally wouldn't choose a school based on how they set up testing, but it's worth understanding what you're about to get yourself into.

Upon getting accepted my roommate's pre-med boyfriend said "Well that's interesting."

Maybe you won't get to return the favor of such a comment...

Some people just can't be happy for others. He frequently tells me that he should have applied to vet school since it's so much easier to get into than med school. I wish him the best, but he will never be my doctor!

That's the kind of comment I can't brush off. I would have to say something.

Reminds me of when someone told me, "Oh cool, I have a friend who's in vet school. Such a shame though, she's too smart to be a vet."

I just keep telling myself that people say these types of things out of insecurities. Someone did them wrong and this is how they are coping. After all, we are only human.

I could pay my way through vet school if I had a nickel every time I was told....
"Oh you should got to University of Kentucky, they have an excellent vet school"
(Happened last night)

1) there is no vet school there. :nono:
I've even had alum of U of KY argue this with me :smack: (too much moonshine)

2) The fact that I was accepted anywhere is totally blown off :annoyed:
I should go to other school "X" :poke:

Now that we've established the non existence of University of Kentucky CVM....:slap:

3) other school"X" can be anywhere from Ivy League to (more often) community college program :diebanana:

Hahaha yes this...all of this. It's amazing people don't know the difference between vet tech programs, animals science majors, and MEDICAL SCHOOL.

Living in Missouri, I've had a couple people shocked that K-State does three years of lecture and one year of clinics rather than the 2+2 that Mizzou does. Including the one vet I work with that didn't go to Mizzou, because she went to Mississippi State. I'm like "no really, that's how most schools do things, Mizzou and Mississippi are unique!" I was talking to the Merial rep for the clinic I work at last week, and he was like "wow, three years of lecture, that sounds awful!" Sometimes I am a little sad to be missing out on the extra clinic time I could have gotten at Mizzou, but it will also be nice to have normal-length summers and not have to adjust to a block schedule.

Also one of my co-workers who's pre-vet (she'll be applying this year) was under the impression that we could get IS tuition at K-State because we're a neighboring state. Lol, I wish.

Yeah...I went to a 3+1 And I for sure wouldn't trade it for more time on clinics. At least I got to have fun and more of a life during that 3rd year, as opposed to being someone's full time paperwork slave on clinics...

idk, the equal amount of three years of lecture crammed into two with 4 weeks less of a summer then everyone else does sound like it could be pretty scary. I'm definitely nervous to do a June-December semester.

I'm not in vet school yet but I got this last night.

Idiot upon hearing I'm applying this cycle: "Oh, that's not really that hard, right?"
Me: "Well, actually it's pretty competitive, so I'm a little stressed out about applying this summer."
Idiot: "Yeah, but it's not really that hard, you'll get in."
Me: "Our school gets around 1,000 applications every year...for 100 spots."
Idiot: "Oh, haha! But you'll still probably get in! I mean it can't be that hard."
Me: :smack:

Oh! I've got 2 good ones!

Cousin: "So I heard you got into vet school! That's really cool. Where?"
Me: "Iowa State. It's in Ames."
Cousin: "Oh, fun fun. So how much longer do you have then? Weren't you already studying vet at *undergrad name*?"
Me: "No, no. That was me doing the pre-reqs and getting my bachelors in biology. Vet school is another 4 years."
Cousin: "Wait, so... you were there for 5 years, and now you've got another 4? Vets get that much education? Jesus, they're almost like real doctors!"
Me: "Yep. Funny how that works."
Cousin: "Oh, well, anyway... Ball (his dog) has had this weird limp on his left hind leg for a week or so and I really don't want to spend money on taking him somewhere so I was hoping you could look at him for me."
Me:  *makes up some stuff about how I am not really sure and that I recommend he take his dog to the vet if it needs care*

It's actually kinda hilarious, because he makes far, far more money than I do. He probably makes more now with a GED than I will make out of vet school, honestly. At least he's a nice guy.

Walmart cashier: "So what high school do you go to?" (I do look pretty young, admittedly)
Me: "Oh, I'm not in high school. I'm graduating in May with my bachelors degree and then I'm off to vet school this fall."
Walmart cashier: "Oh, that's awesome! I always wanted to be a vet. Where are you going?"
Me: "Iowa State."
Walmart cashier: "Oh... isn't that, like, a really bad school?"
Me: "What do you mean?"
Walmart cashier: "I've heard that *random nearby community college with a vet tech program* is one of the best vet schools around. Why not just go there instead of all the way to Iowa?"
Me: :bang:

A humorous but depressing convo with the boyfriend:

Me: Whew, can't believe I'm staring about a quarter of a million dollars of debt straight in the face. Wanna help me pay off my loans?
Him: *nervous chuckle* Well, I'm assuming that's what it will be after all of the accumulation of interest right?
Me: Uhh...no. That's where I'll be the moment I receive my degree.
Him:

He was definitely surprised to say the least.

Or from my roommate:
Her: Yay, we both got into grad school! I'm so proud of us! But we're going to be in so much debt! (referring to her debt of like $15,000)
Me: *tells her how much debt I'm expecting to be in*
Her: :wow:

Also I really hate when she refers to vet school as "grad school". Is it just me that feels this way?

This rubs me the wrong way too. Certainly not as much as when people confuse it with tech programs, but still. No one refers to med school as grad school...

I mean, veterinary school is considered grad school technically. Some schools lump their veterinary students with the rest of the grad student population, too. All 'graduate school' means is a program that offers a degree higher than a Bachelor's.

If we're being technical, Ohio State considers Vet School as a "professional school" (specifically a health professions school) rather than a graduate school.

If we're getting super technical, it's called a professional school because it is a graduate program that trains for a career rather than a particular field of something :p Regardless....not important. I don't think your roommate was belittling veterinary school.

"You're going all the way to Minnesota? Couldn't you get into any of the schools back here that are better? It's so cold there."

Yes, because we all know that climate dictates the quality of the educational institution...

Also, reading this thread made me realize why so many people are asking me if my dual program is 6 years long; I was really confused by where that number was coming from, but if there's this idea that vet school is 2 years, it makes sense.

Some backstory: at my school there is a four year program for students applying to undergrad called Vet Prep. Students that are accepted into Vet Prep and successfully complete the program are guaranteed acceptance into the veterinary school here. Obviously, this program is extremely competitive (5 students get accepted yearly). I met the incoming Vet Prep class for this year since I was on a panel for them during their orientation to the program (I was on the panel for my involvement in a Vet Prep-unrelated club). I work the front desk in a building that one of the Vet Prep students lives in and he comes to talk to me during my shifts sometimes.

Anyway, I haven't seen him much since last semester (I started working different desk shifts) and he finally ran into me this week and we started talking. He asked me how my applications had gone and I told him where I was going for vet school.

After hearing about the schools I got in to, he stuck his hand out, shook my hand, and told me that I scared the living daylights out of him.

It's nice to know that I am apparently intimidating to someone. This is doubly hilarious since I know many people who would say the same about him!

My grandpa crying on the phone with me was probably my non-sarcastic favorite response. He was at the casino and the bar tender was super worried about why he was crying and when he told her, I could hear her yell congrats through the phone. lol.

So far, no sarcastic responses yet. Professors in my bio department keep asking how long vet school is.. I want to say, "And you wonder why pre-vets transfer out of here...." But there's so few pre-vets that get to the application cycle each year, they don't really get experience with it.
