Graduates of eligible non-accredited dental specialty programs who are interested in becoming licensed specialists in Canada may apply to take the Dental Specialty Core Knowledge Examination (DSCKE). The DSCKE will be used by Canadian Faculties of dentistry as part of the admission process for entry into Dental Specialty Assessment and Training Programs.

The DSCKE consists of four components written over two days covering the following areas: Core Biomedical and Dental Sciences, Scientific Literature Appraisal Skills, Core Clinical Sciences, and Patient Management, Part A and Part B.

Dental Specialty Assessment and Training Programs will perform a detailed assessment of credentials as a part of the admission process. Checklists for each specialty have been developed as a guide to assist potential applicants in evaluating their specialty program’s equivalency to an accredited Canadian program.

For more information, go to http://www.acfd.ca/en/info/specialty/index.html

This thread is for foreing-trained dental specialists (FTDSs) who would like to become licensed dental specialists in Canada. All posts within this scope are welcome.

Thanks for starting this post Micha. When are you giving the DSCKE? this Nov?

does anybody have any idea of how the whole process is going to be?

hi guys , i am an orthodontist and ftd i am taking dscke in this nov and any orthodontists taking the exam and by the way is it true that we dont need either p.r or citizenship to give the exam and get admission if we go through

Hi

I'm an endodontist
I'm planning to take the DSCKE in November 2010.

It seems to me that the DSCKE is going to be similar to the EE, where those with the highest scores and profiles might get favorable assessment of their specialty degrees and gain admission into the 2nd or maybe 3rd year of an accredited specialty program in Canada.

I'm not worried about the exam. I'm concerned about two things::scared:
1. Are there enough spots?
2. The assessment step.

I was just wondering aren't the specialty programs already 2-3 yrs in length ....also are they going to increase the number of seats becoz it is as for now very limited and u all will be competing with ppl who have practised in canada for a while .

the process as i understood as of now is that it is separate from the existing canadian graduate programs. it is one to assess the foreign specialists. after the exam a candidate can go in four ways
1. he could be rejected
2. he could be asked to do a 1 year assesment in a university which are uoft and bc
3. he could be assessed for three months if he or she is good- means in the dscke exam i believe
4.
he or she could be approved without any course to take the licencing board exam

Now once certified it does not end there , we have to take the RCDS licencing exam.
The DSCKE exam has no specialist component in it.its EE plus critical appraisal which is hard core statistics and general treatment planning.
this is what i understand from what i have read uptil now. if there is anything more please update.

This is interesting but where do u get ur info from dentist72 becoz it sure doesn't sound like that on the website.I hope all of this is true makes things quite better for all of us.

i have been searching for this from 2007 the time i heard about this exam. i gathered the info from various places. the process of assessment itself has changed from next year. the year 2009 fee was 4000 dollars. next year it is 2000 dollars. this is coz next year onwards the assessment is done at the faculties, not by a committee of experts at acfd.

There are two challenges here:
  1. Writing the DSCKE exam in November 2010 will be similar to the first batch of FTDs writing the first EE when it was first administered. We won't have any idea whatsoever what the exam is like until we actually take it!
  2. Meeting the documentation requirements is a challenge at least for me for several reasons: the details they ask for such as the timetables are not usually provided by the school where I got my specialty program. Not to mention that I came here immediately and didn't do the paper work needed to become a licensed specialist over there.
Call me a pessimist but this is from the DSCKE front page:
"There are currently a very limited number of Dental Specialty Assessment and Training Programs available in Canada, and successful completion of the DSCKE does not guarantee entry into these programs."

This means that getting in won't be any easier than advanced standing.

Micha dont lose heart its not all that hard. start it and it will be easy. i went thru it. next year its not as tough as this year and less expensive too. so do it.

when i started i didnt have my speciality registered coz we didnt need it. but i did it and submitted. As long as you are eligible to be licenced in ur jurisdiction as a specialist they do not care when u did it. they want the licence though. the time table they mean is like the transcript for the undergraduate. the school should have your hours even if it is masters. for masters it is the number of clinical hours and the number of hours that you did teach undergrads. the college will or ideally should have it. mine had

So your wrote the DSCKE last year? What was it like??

not last year. the first exam is to be held in november, 2009. i do not know yet.

Does anyone have any idea how many people are taking the exam this coming November?

does using an inappropriate luting material have an effect on ceramic crown fracture?
thanks

its a myth based on a single study which is statistically incorrect which says that the resin modified glass ionomer expands and will fracture the ceramic crown and if used for luting posts, will fracture the root. it is not true though. infact, zirconia crowns can be cemented with gic directly or if we need to use resin cement then we have to treat the zirconia with sialne layer.

Thanks, but what if you use a cement that is too soluble, too viscous or too thick, can't it affect the ceramic crown, leading to fractures eventually?

I think they use the resin modified GI cement ,they r quite good as a luting agent.I have seen it being used with excellent results, never saw a case come back with fractures .

Just to stress the point: what if you are not using GIC? What if you are using ZnOE or any other inappropriate cement?

well no! the crown will be in the patient's hand before it gets a chance to fracture. the other common reason to fracture is internal stress

r u taking exam this nov dentcan? whats ur speciality?

Ya, I`m an endodontist. What`s your specialty? Do you have any idea how many are taking the exam?

i am a prosthodontit. i have no clue abt it . we will know when we go for the exam

I hope there aren't too many and good luck to us :xf:. BTW, how are you studying for the second part (sci lit appraisal)?

the reeences they gave is sufficient i believe. what about u? how are you studying it?

I`m not really studying for it. I hope I can read and understand a paper well enough....:p and I made myself familiar with some stats definitions but nothing more since I am not sure what they want from us and I hate stats. I am hoping for the best and that I did not waste 4000$ :(.

did anyone hear abt the exam when is it going to be held and where??

dscke the exam is on nov 14 th and 15 th held in university of toronto another 12 days to go

Hi, I know there's not a lot of time left, but anyone wanna go over exams together?

I think the most important thing to ask ourselfs , whats next after this exam ? I'm checking uoft and b c and there is no sign for DSATP ?

no one has got clear picture till now but exam date is fast approaching. are u taking the exam this year just momani?

guys how is the prep going on?

I feel like Ièm studying the wrong stuff, if you know what I mean....... I have no idea what to prepare myself for and since we have no idea about anything regarding this exam ( apart from not being allowed to drink or use the restrooms.....) the feeling is not so good :(

just don't give up hope i think a few more days to go.......i know it would have been a lot better if u guys had clearer picture but i think on the day of the exam they will explain it to u...at least they shud have enough courtesy to do so.we are all professionals here after all.
I t is confirmed that for general dentists they are going to make the process same like Quebecs process.but still not clear.

its an exam in basic sceinse and clinical dentistry , the material is clear and sample questions are representable I think ,its harder for non canadian and american graduates because of the ethics and cli. appraisal and biostat stuff ....
the thing is what doors does this exam open for us , i mean whats next in order to get license as a specialist in canada ???

Hi dent rdh,
our exams were ok. there were five sessions totally. two of which were eligibiliy questions. the biostatistics was tough. but now that we know which way to direct our attention it will beeasier next time. since it was our first time there was no clue what the questions wud be like. the last sessions were patient management questions. they were ok. but the marking was a little unclear, since there were more than one answer to one question.
the results are not out yetand we are stil in the dark as to what next.

Thanx for replying to my post...it was very helpful....I hope you all do really well.I know the first time at any exam can be scary but u did it and it makes you a step closer to ur destination.

Hello Dentist72.

We know that one can try eligibility 2 times only from the next year. Is there limits on how many times you can try for specialty?

Thank you.
