I am interested in doing GS and was wondering what sort of research I should be looking into to get there. I know I can look for clinical research opportunities, but do bench work opportunities exist as well for GS?

Also, I read somewhere that your research does not necessarily have to be in the area of your desired specialty. How true is this?

Lastly, what COMLEX/USMLE score should I be trying to shoot for?

Sorry for the basic questions, I am new to this whole thing.

Look for clinical surgery research at neighboring MD programs. Clinical is easier to publish and it will allow you to make contacts and learn a TON about surgery in the process.

For board scores, obviously aim as high as you can. You can find the AOA and ACGME gen surg averages by a Google search, but they are typically slightly above average (low 230s for USMLE, low 500s for COMLEX). As a DO applying ACGME, you'll want to be well above the matched MD average. Around 40-45 DOs match ACGME GS per year and there are over 100 AOA GS spots.
