It does, whatever is added to your CV helps. This doesn't mean guarantee or anything - nothing in this process is guaranteed in any way - but it is possible.
I also know of FTDs in specialties that didn't go through AEGD or MPH - so anything is possible. Yes it is difficult, but nothing is impossible, but you need to give them a reason to even look at your application.
You do need to know your background and see if it is practical to think about it or not though. And if going for a post-grad program, I'd definitely get to know the people and director of the program.
