How does nitric acid reduce organometallic compounds?

My book says that nitric acid is a very strong oxidizing agents that can oxidize dimethyl mercury into CO2, water, and metal ions.

I tried looking up the mechanism online but could't find it. I'm especially confused how the CO2 is produced. Is this something I should just memorize?
