How does the LPS layer assist gram-negative bacteria in resisting antibiotics?

Antibiotics that effect the bacterial cell wall cannot reach the peptidoglycan layer due to the protection offered by the outer membrane and attached LPS.

Also conjugation involving the transfer of antibiotic resistance encoding genes occurs more frequently between gram negative bacteria.
