how important is attending medical conferences while doing MD?

hello! I am currently doing MD in Romania. I am a a 5th year medical student . my batchmates are crazy about attending medical congresses because they think that having a lot of certificates will improve their chances of getting a PG in europe(esp germany). Is this actually true? call me naive, but I personally think that my own text books are more than enough at this level. And attending only for the sake of 'collecting' certificates seems ignorant..help me out guys!
