One year of Internship (PGY1 or Clinical Base Year)

Three years of Anesthesia Residency (PGY2-4)

Four Years total to become a board certified MDA.

A few questions about Anesth. residency:

Is it looked down upon to do a transitional year rotating internship and then apply to anesthesiology?

How about doing 1 year of Internal medicine or family practice, and then applying to a anesthesiology?

Thanks for your help

1) No its not looked down upon

2) Sure you can do that but its going to be a pain in the a$$. Remember that the match for anesthesia is for spots 1.5 yrs into the future. That means you'll be cold calling places with tons of other folks who are bailing out of their residency to try for anesthesia if you want a CA-1 spot immediately following your pgy-1 year. Plus you'll have to either: 1) have your programs blessing, 2)break your contract, or 3)get kicked outta your program.
