How's finals week going for you guys? We don't have a final in AP Bio or Spanish, so all I've really got to worry about is Pre-cal. Also, anyone doing anything cool for Christmas break?

I don't have any finals (thank god) but I have a calc test tomorrow and a foot and ankle anatomy quiz coming up and foot taping practicals.

During Christmas break I'm getting my license and a new a phone; I'm so freaking excited!

Used my vouchers in AP Bio (I'm dropping that class after this sem) and AP Calc. I have finals in TA (LOL), Weights (LOL), English (Got a 88/80 today), and History.

Finals week isn't that bad this year! How are all of you doing!?

T-158 DAYS TILL GRADUATION! WOOOHOOOO

finished finals, back home for 3 weeks where I'll do absolutely nothing and then its back to college. Life's good bros, wbu guys?

Got a 7/12 on AP Stats mock exam. Counts for an 85% in the class due to the curve - average was a 3 or 4. Only 2 people got a higher score than I did.

Also got solid Bs on last 3 AP Chem tests/quizzes.

Yeah im not sure what to do over break to be honest, its weird.

lol seriously, I got 3 books, a gym membership for while I'm here, and started a show to keep myself occupied... And still managed to get bored for like 2 hours

I'm leaving for Florida Christmas Day hahaha

Snow > Just plain cold (aka FL)
lol, when it's bad you just see a lot of ice

DUDE! Whoaaaaaaaaaaa! CONGRATSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! HOLY F I'm excited for you! HOW did you get it so early?!?!?!?!

Did that come in the mail or website?!?!?!

Did that come in the mail or website?!?!?!

I'm such a good student they had to tell me early. :p

Website, through the Barrett self-service application. I just confirmed it with the student support specialist, it's legit!

Lol, now I'm freaking out :/

Did your status on the top change to "Decision Rendered"?

Thanks brah! I'm still surprised I got in, it's something like only 20% out of state. Regardless, awaiting any scholarship notification!

How were your stats if you don't mind? Maybe PM me? I am curious about how I am looking now

It was probably my ECs/intangible stuff that got me in. My GPA is way below average. SAT is slightly above average.

SAT: 1340/1600 (670M,670R) only took once

GPA: 3.48 unweighted, 3.88 weighted, upward trend in Junior year, 6 APs, all honors classes when available, top 15% in my class like 40/330

ECs:
Lacrosse - 4 years, 3 year Varsity, 2 year Varsity captain, 3 year off-season conditioning captain
Coaching - 4 year youth lacrosse coach
Internship - 2 years at US Senate
Indoor track - 4 years Varsity
Online journalist - 3 years
Clubs - History Club founder & president

You read my essay so take that however. My recs were good, got one from AP Bio teacher and one from my boss' boss' boss at my US Senate internship (lol), he now works at Georgetown Uni. He's my dad's best friend and knows me personally. Also, I got a 5 in AP Bio so my teacher wrote a great rec.

I've heard it's also a lot harder to get in if you're out of state. You probably have a great chance regardless especially as an AZ resident who applied priority.

Congrats Matt! Work hard people! That's all I can say. I recently finished my first semester of college and it's been a great experience. But I know that if I didn't work hard in high school, I wouldn't be here. Take all the opportunities that you can to better yourself and do them. You'll have time for fun and games in college too, but it's easier to improve yourself in high school.

What do you guys think about a major in global health? Deciding between biochem, chem, bio, global health, and possibly biophysics. Might also be interested in a business minor.

Sounds similar to public health, and that's great if that's what you're interested in. You can probably expect biophysics and biochem/chem to have ALOT more science, theory, and math than global health. But heck, any of them will get you to med school, and I'm sure you'll have some time to get a feel for each before you have to make a final decision.

global health does have a lot less math. I'm decent at some math. I'm bad at trig/geometry, good at Calc, and great at "practical" math like stats. That's where a business minor would come into play - I'm good at that kind of math. I'm even considering Psychology. All of these would give me the option to take enough chem, physics, bio, and biochem for the pre-reqs and MCAT prep.

Biophysics is gonna be a hell of a lot of math. Not the fun kind either lol! Chem and Biochem have physical chemistry and analytical chemistry as part of their curriculums at most schools, and those classes are known to be very math heavy. Biology, you already know. Calc and Physics 1, and that's about it. You can branch into a lot of different areas of Bio, too. I'd personally go with that or global health, just because I couldn't handle the upper level math associated with the others.

Just put in for Biochemistry BA. BA is supposed to have less math than BS, more liberal with your course selection. Biochem and Global Health are my top choices atm and I can switch my major as much as I want right now lol. Will feel out both once classes start and will ask some questions when I meet with an advisor at orientation. Both biochem and global health are available as a major and a minor, so maybe I'll just do both. :D

You'll be fine.... You're on this site, so you're obviously one of the best of the best anyway

Aye, do Biochem! Then we can chill for sure! Which orientation are you doing to?

Haven't paid deposit yet. When is it? Family and I are going to visit in February and make the final decision. If I like it we'll pay the deposit and get scheduled for the spring orientation.

I am signed up for the March 27th one. It is the first one they have I believe! You should sign up for that one if everything works out and you like the campus! (Make sure you go eat at the Barrett dining hall) Simply amazing food

Is that the Barrett orientation? I thought you had to be admitted first to sign up for the Barrett one. Good luck tho!

Not sure but my cousin who goes to Barrett attended a non-barrett one which was earlier than the barrett orientated one and he got to choose classes and stuff first. I'll maybe change it after I get the decision but for now its March 27

Yeah Barrett students have their own orientation for only Barrett students. They don't want you to go to both. You will find out the Barrett date once you pay the deposit I guess. :p

We'll see on Jan 10th if I need to change my orientation date or not :p

SAT: 1250 (580CR & 670M) Below average but whatevs.

GPA: 3.78 UW and 4.2 W, Most honors classes, about 4 AP classes (rural school; doesn't offer ****)

ECs:

HOSA (All 4 years)- Held positions as VP and Treasurer
NHS (Starting Sophomore year)- Community service projects
Research Volunteer (Summer 2013)- Spent all summer helping with research at Biodesign
NTHS (2 years)- Helped other clubs fund-raise
Some tutoring in Chem and Calc (Counted as service hours for NHS tho)

LOR: 1 of them came from the MD/PhD that let me work for her this past summer (she teaches Barrett students), and the other from a AP Psych teacher. I got to read the one from my AP Psych but not the one from the doc. They both should be very good tho.

Essay: You read it I think, basically outlined how I overcame adversity and challenge when I volunteered at Bio design over summer. You can judge that however.

Met the early decision deadline. I am kind of nervous because my SAT is lower than average but then again I know that Barrett will take people with a below average SAT as long as everything else kicks butt.

What do you guys think?!

I think you should be able to get in.

To add on, they're definitely holistic. So what if your SAT is 60 points below average. (Very small difference) I got in with a 3.48 GPA when the average is a 3.84 and my SAT was only 30 points above average and I'm not even in state! They care about what you have done outside of the classroom and your personal qualities a lot. I think the rec from a Barrett teacher and experience at ASU will seal the deal .

For some reason, that helped ease my nervousness! Thanks a ton Matt and I sure as heck can't wait to meet you if you seal the deal on ASU!
