Let's say you typically have 5 hearts every day on the schedule, how many icu beds do you need? Full service cardiac program doing cabgs, valves, vads and transplants, and tavrs.

this is a first-order kinetics question in disguise, isn't it?

Our place does between 3 and 7 cases per weekday (TAVR counted as a cardiac case), and postop, the cardiac cases go to a unit of 24 beds. It's tough to say what is the right ratio in this setting, since sick thoracic, big vascular, liver transplant, surgical misadventures, and all ECMO (VV or VA) go to this same unit.

What's your average length of stay and std dev? You might find a model estimator in one of the many staff/schedule/modeling papers by Franklin Dexter.
