If I sign a contract, then receive a better offer (e.g. categorical vs prelim), can I get out of it?

I just need to know that if I sign a contract for a prelim spot, it won't mean I can't accept a categorical position than opens up.

Did you accept this spot as a part of the match or SOAP?

What do you think a contract means?

why would a program offer you a contract that didn't mean anything? who needs you to sign a meaningless piece of paper?

You think a categorical spot is going to open up between now and may/june? That is almost certainly not going to occur. If you sign the contract you are expected to complete the year.
