I know there have been threads on this but

Has anyone ever gotten in after an IA related to a honor code violation?

Honestly, I'd appreciate it if judgement was kept to a minimum - it was a dumb decision that I obviously didn't think through. It's my freshman year and now I'm wondering if it's even worth trying to pursue this or if it's time to start considering other things. It's just difficult since medicine has been the only career I've ever envisioned doing since I was a kid.

What exactly did the honor code violation involve? I think most mistakes can be overcome; how hard that is to do will depend on the nature of the mistake.

Concur. I'd need to know what the violation was, and how you explained it both in your app, and at interview. And yes, you'd be asked about it in interview!

PM me if you'd like.

Without specifics it is hard to even venture a guess, I will say that since this has already occurred and there is no way to change that, you only can move forward and be the best candidate you can be. If you dont apply, you wont get in. If you do apply, you might get in. That is the only probability you can get

It was changing an answer on an exam and submitting it for regrading. The matter has been resolved and it was honestly the stupidest thing I've ever done and to this day I can't believe I actually did it. But I'm currently doing research in the professor's lab, and am getting relatively good grades in college so far. I'm planning to join the honor board after this experience and also start a volunteering position at the local hospital next semester.

I'm still a freshman and so I haven't gotten to the application process yet. I just want to know if there's really any point in me continuing along this road.
If I did apply, I would address the issue honestly and succinctly and hope that they don't dismiss me as a candidate.

Are you also an international student? And your goal is a US allopathic school? That will make a big difference in my answer.

I recently got a green card and am looking into the US allopathic schools. I'll probably also apply in Europe.

Impossible to get into a US MD school? No, but...

You will have one of the larger uphill battles of virtually anyone else. There are many schools that will not take your application seriously with this kind of IA (right or wrong on their part, it is simply a reality). Even with strong academics and an otherwise sound application, you will need to have something different/special to make schools notice/want you. There are just too many 'average' or even 'strong academic, but boring everything else' applicants to waste interview spots on applicants with academic dishonesty IAs, unless they have something very different.

I say this to everyone applying to medical school, but it applies doubly for you. Have a backup plan.

What are some common backup plans? I have no idea what I'd do if not medicine and that's what's stressing me out.

Respiratory therapist, physical therapis, nurse, nurse practitioner, physicians assistant, podiatrist, occupational therapist...etc

Respiratory therapist, physical therapis, nurse, nurse practitioner, physicians assistant, podiatrist, occupational therapist...etc

There is more in common between being a lawyer and a physician than a respiratory therapist and a physician.

This is a significant problem. How do you know that you will be happy in medicine? As a college freshman, what do you know about medicine that makes you say, "yes, I could do this for a 30+ year career?" How do you know that it is better for you than any number of other jobs or directions? How much time have you spent investigating other careers, fields etc?

Since you literally know nothing about any other fields, here are some options. A co-resident sitting next to me points out that this isn't a complete list since prostitute isn't on it, but it is still pretty good.

Medicine is the only thing that has really captured my interest. It combines science with people and uses that to do good. There aren't that many other careers that allow you to do that. I could start looking into other careers but I just want to keep the hope of a medical career alive.

Look into clinical research.

I guess you can call it a booming field to work in, after all

I think that it is a fair question. Maybe not specifically an artillery and missile officer, I have to look into what that entails exactly... But, again, a good 30-50% of my medical school class, including myself had no ****ing clue what we were getting into when we showed up on day one. Most of us were a combination of "our parents pushed us to do this," "We didn't know what else to do," or "Yay, science and helping people!" with no real functional understanding of what we were sacrificing/getting into. True that most of us (maybe 80% of that original 30-50%) ended up realizing that we made the right choices (because sometimes parents do know what they are talking about), or we simply got lucky, but by the same token, maybe 10-15% of my medical school class should have done something else. Some outright acknowledge this, others were just miserable, others you could simply tell by how they were going about their residency application process that they were just going through the motions because they were there, not because they actually wanted to go into it.

I 'got lucky' in some regards. I just don't like the showing up as a college freshman, age 18, and all you can think about is medical school and getting in, when in reality there are dozens if not hundreds of viable professions that may suit certain people better. Not because they couldn't hack it as a physician, but because they would simply be happier doing something else.

Did the IA go through?

say you cheated on an exam, you were caught, you apologized to the prof - was it kept between the two of you or did it get reported higher up? If so, did they have an official meeting with you and declare you "guilty/not-guilty"?

A co-resident sitting next to me points out that this isn't a complete list since prostitute isn't on it, but it is still pretty good.

I think prostitute falls under "tool grinder."

Good luck with that. I was on the honor board at my undergrad, and applicants for the board had to have zero history of IA.
