Technology iPad

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
While I continue to question the omission of flash and a camera, I have seen the Keynote, iBooks, pages, and numbers apps. I have to say I am quite impressed.

Camera, may or may not make it in for the next version. However flash most likely won't see the light of day but there will be a growing trend to switch away from flash as the iPad grows in popularity or even an iPad version of the same site. Already some sites have gone that way

And yet, they do.

For all you iPad doubters, I have two words for you: "Texas Pete"...it'll make your words taste better when you eat them. ;)

Threadjack: I so miss Texas Pete. MallWart stopped stocking it where I'm at. Seriously bummed:(

Yeah, best to wait. I know I know. I can't believe I'm actually waiting to buy an apple product for a change

I did the same for my iPhone last June. I didn't open it up until I finished Step 1. (I had it about half a week before but I just didn't open it up).

iPad come yet?

I probably won't get it until next week, because I had it delivered to the office (Apple requires a signature at delivery) before I realized that April 3rd was a Saturday.

I think we would have seen a fanboy review by now if it did.

Not every Mac user is a "fanboy." I'm certainly not. I only buy things when I need them. Most of my Apple stuff is ancient. My everyday computer is a PowerBook G4, my iPod is 3rd-generation, and I still have one of the original Airport Express base stations that looks like a UFO (ca. 2004). I don't even use an iPhone (I have a Palm Centro...more "ancient" tech).

I think the iPad has a lot of potential in medicine, so I'm breaking my usual rule and becoming an early adopter. Sorry if that bugs any of you.

The haters are really tiresome gnats.

zOMG OMG IT'S OUT I'm so exciteeeeed.

gonna go load up an adobe flash porno on it

I did this with both my wii (until christmas break) and my iphone (until after step 1). It takes ohhh so much self control to look at those pretty boxes waiting to be opened lol.

Very happy with the iPad. For some reason I thought the specs said it was heavier than my Kindle DX, but it feels lighter. Very comfortable to hold (well balanced, not too heavy).

Just got mine. Typing this from it, in fact. I won't have much time to mess around with it until tonight, though. So far, so good! :)

Do you know how to make SDN display in the regular version instead of the mobile version? I tried changing the preferences through the drop down menu at the bottom of the page but it didn't work. All the other vBulletin forums display like a regular webpage.

I'm already carrying mine from room to room for patient education purposes. This isn't what I originally planned for it but it's just so easy to bookmark some common clinical links such as pollen counts, drug prices, images, cardiovascular risk calculation, etc. The pages pull up in a couple of seconds via wifi. Much easier than using the PC in the exam room because I have the EMR on there and you have to get through the firewall, etc. Plus you can just turn it around and show the patient.

A case is a must, however, because it's kind of dense and slippery if you ask me.

I noticed the same thing. Not sure if it's an SDN thing or a Safari thing. I'll keep fiddling around with it.

I agree with Andre...the iPad is a little slippery. I think I'll be getting some kind of case for it soon.

I'm guessing that the forum is detecting the browser version and automatically displaying in mobile mode. Will ask about this in the support forum.

patient education? yeah we need more of that.
the tablet sounds like it would have some nice applications in the workplace.

I will get the HP slate.

That's an actual product? I thought Balmer was making a joke when he presented it
Come on, you had to know that there would be a million iPad knockoff's within 12 months of the iPad's launch.

Yeah, this forum doesn't display very well on the iPad. It's probably going to have to be changed on the discussion forum side.

THe Joo Joo has arrived and, according to Engadget is kind of DOA: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/05/fusion-garage-joojoo-review/ It certainly sounds half-baked. For example, it has a USB port that can't so anything but charge. No drivers for anything else. I think the devil will, be in the implemtation details for tablets in the near future. The HP slate hasn't even outlined how it is going to turn Windows 7 into a touch OS.

If this is any indication of the iPad potential, then the possibilities especially for health care may not be truly realised at this point. I found this app visually stunning. It even looks like it truly has relevant information such as electronegativity tables and electron orbital information.

I watched the video and don't understand why this can't (or has it already) been applied with a mouse as a desktop app? The program reminds of of MS Encarta back in the day when you could still buy it on a cd-rom.

OH I know that and none of them will even come close to the iPad

Probably right. They will all come with more features including USB ports, sim card slots, bigger hard drive, multi-tasking, camera, etc. The only features I can definitely see in the next version of the iPad -- camera, > hd drive,

But more isn't necessarily better, we know that VHS won the battle vs betamax; so will Apple take the crown?

Don't know why you would need to have access to a SIM card slot since the device is unlocked and you can use it with a Data plan on any network that supports 3G. The HD size isn't a problem, wait till the cost of flash drives comes down in price and you will see bigger drives in these. Just like the original iPod started with a 5gb drive and cost 300 or so, look what happened as time went on. USB ports? That's what the dock connector is for. You also have the USB dongle that you can use to connect an SD card to transfer photos and what not.

It took apple a year from when the first iPhone was released to come out with Copy and paste and they only did so when they felt like they had devised the best solution that was easiest for their customers to use. Same thing goes with system wide search, native (not web based) applications, etc. Apple isn't in the business of releasing half baked implementation of features. This is probably why we haven't seen true multi tasking. I know on the Android platform they have multi-tasking but the problem is when you want to quit an application why should I need to either reset the phone or have a separate application like the Advanced Task Killer in order to quit an application. Seems backwards to me.

Wait until thursday to see what is next in the iPhone OS 4.0

Also remember this, it doesn't take much creativity to add things to a device just to say we have this option on our device. It takes more creativity to implement it correctly and if you can't implement it correctly (not talking about you or I but rather the general consumer who has less knowledge about CE) then don't put it in the device. Tablet computers have been around for about a decade and they have remained a niche product because they didn't appeal to the general consumer. The iPad may be just a fad, 300K people buying one because they think it's the next cool device to own. Time will tell if it's just a passing fad or opens up a new door to mobile computing that the other tablet computers couldn't…

hi everyone

The iPad is a tablet computer developed by Apple Inc. Announced on January 27, 2010, it is part of a category between a smartphone and a laptop computer.

Similar in functionality to the smaller, less powerful iPhone or iPod touch, it runs a modified version of the same operating system (iPhone OS), with a user interface redesigned to take advantage of the larger screen. The iPad has a 9.7-inch (25 cm) LED backlit multi-touch display, 16 to 64 gigabytes (GB) of flash memory, Bluetooth, and a 30-pin dock connector to sync with iTunes and connect wired accessories. Two models have been announced: one with 802.11n Wi-Fi and one with 802.11n Wi-Fi and 3G (which can connect to HSDPA cellular networks), and Assisted GPS. Both models may be purchased with three different storage capacities.

I'm so confused. Is this spam? Basic info on the iPad in a thread dedicated to discussing it?

I'm using the stock Apple iPad case, right now, and find it very useful. It's lightweight, very grippy and folds over to tilt the iPad up so you can type on it. Best of all, it has a somewhat rigid surface so you can put charts and a prescription pad on top of it and use it to write on without worrying about damaging the glass.

It has an unusual construction which puts the seams on the outside edges like a retail store blister pack. I think the purpose is to provide some edge protection from falls. It has cut-outs in all the right places. I can't think of any reason to take the iPad out of this case - practically ever.

The iPad is very solid and has no moving parts except for the recessed switches. However, it's slippery and you wouldn't want to drop it because of the glass screen. There's no good way to actually get a good grip on it. Although this case is thin, I think it will protect the unit pretty well if dropped.

SDN looks normal on my iPad, now. They fixed the mobile mode issue. :)

I am on my iPad right now. I don't know what problem you are running into but sdn is the exact same as it is on my computer.

The potential for the iPad is amazing and I am loving it. But right now apps are still be developed. Just give it time and the haters will be getting ones for themselves, if not it is only their loss.

the iPad really does have the ability to do something special for medicine. we will learn with time.

and the whole flash debate will not matter as much when more sites go to html5.

I was hesitant to get one and 1 day later I know I made the right decision.

If anyone has any questions I will answer.

If you were weak and pathetic you'd have been camped out in a sleeping bag in front of your local apple store last Fri. night. Give yourself some credit. ;)

Yeah, but I had to get up at 0300 for clinicals, so calling an order in worked out better for me. I'm not much for waiting in a long queue anyway.

Sorry, I meant SD card, not SIM card slot. It would be helpful so you can plug in your camera, photos cards.

Heres a video of the HP slate -- could be a mighty challenge?

AH ok. Well there is the Camera Connection Kit. While not the best solution but it is an alternative and I'm not sure how much internal room would have been left for an SD slot and the required components but it does allow for connection with a camera

That thing is noticeably larger and thicker than an iPad, and I suspect it'll be heavier, too. We'll also have to wait and see if it matches the iPad's 10-hour battery life.

This is one of those situations a product's success or failure lies in the details, and not just in terms of features. Just look at how many different iPod and iPhone "clones" are out there...none of which match the originals in terms of elegance or functionality.

Applications are going to drive iPad sales. We ain't seen nothin' yet.

I think u r right on. The touch interface of the hp slate has had poor reviews compared to the iPad. The hp slate will be better in other areas but where there are weaknesses in the iPad there are always ways around them. Ie internet storage, html 5, google docs, etc. Apps are the key. I give it 6 months before we see what this thing can really do and distinguish itself from the iPhone .
