Technology iPhone Medical Apps

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Bought the MIM app a while, while back; $40 or so ;)

Definitely worth the money spent though.

Pocket Derm
Dermatology is an often neglected area in medical education and training. Pocket Derm distills the field to a core group of common skin findings, allowing non-specialists to quickly diagnose dermatologic conditions without a referral or consult.

Core features include
*Over 50 common dermatologic diagnoses with definitions and photos for easy bedside comparison;
*Glossary of essential Derm Terms to help you precisely describe rashes and communicate with colleagues;
*Search by diagnosis or rash characteristics;
*Request A Diagnosis feature; and
*Free, unlimited updates.

Here is an extended review about free and low-price medical apps…
I' ve been searching these over a month… and I' ll give you my aspect of their functionality and clinical use, especially for final year medical students and doctors…

FREE MEDICAL APPS

Medscape-Epocrates
The master of medical apps… the perfect, the king… Medscape.
If you don' t have Medscape, you have nothing. It's almost perfect and FREE!!!!
You can find almost everything in there… but not EVERYTHING. Epocrates has everything, but it's not as well organized as Medscape. In addition, epocrates needs a paid subscription… no codes means no party!
I think that Medscape is better in general, however, download Epocrates because it offers a great drug guide, where you can find many many drugs, by searching for the main substance or the commercial name, too.

Skyscape
Really useful, too. You can freely download guidelines, calculators, drug index, interaction analyzer, as well as the tool OCM, which is really helpful when you need quick clinical advice without losing time…
And you get often updates too…

Eponyms
A "must-have" for medical students… spots, signs (which are specific and diaforodiagnostic of a certain disease most times), unusual syndromes… everything can be found if it has a NAME of somebody!!!!!! And you are provided with a short explanation… very very useful!

Abbreviations
You can find ALL abbreviations. Although it's the lite version, I think that it's more than full!

Wave medical
It offers a drug guide-toxicology, i.v. drugs compatibility, med calcs and a very accurate differential diagnosis!!!

PEPID
It's almost the same with Wave Medical but with a bit better differential diagnosis, although they seem to be exactly the same but they aren't!!! So download both!

iTriage
It has a brief explanation for many diseases. You can use "symptoms" feature as a differential. You can find pictures, too. Good for quick reference, finding useful relevant images or videos, average cost, advice lines (I think that you'll need internet connection for these last features)

MedWizards
You can download trial versions of 10 days from very good handbooks! (5' minute emergency consult, etc…). It is very useful for your rotations…
Additionaly, it offers a free one year subscription to one handbook. For example they gave me CC Peds, which is very good and I need it for this year!

Medical info by UMMS
Very good reference but needs internet connection unfortunately… it is both in English and Spanish!

Neurology ipc lite
You can find good pictures of neuroanatomy…

Neuromind
The best Neurology reference.

Eye Handbook
Very good ophthalmology database… with atlases, symptoms, diseases, equipment, treatment… differential doesn't work…

Sports Injury Clinic
A good consult for free sports medicine advisor! It can be easily read by somebody who hates orthopedics (ME!!)!!!

Visual Dermatology
It offers a short-term clinical trial and a one-year (I'm not sure) trial for drug-induced dermatological eruptions (common and useful).

CCO Oncology inPractice/CCo HIV inPractice
Very good but REALLY HEAVY for my iphone, so I erased it!

Redi Reader
You can download guidelines from IDSA and other societies. The disadvantage… you cannot manage the files, delete for example something you may not need.

iRadiology
Very very good Radiology!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Calculators
Epocrates: cholesterol, BMI, GFR, CardioMath
Med Calc
And the best… Qx Calculate

Immunization, Growth Charts
But only lite versions………….

CMEs
Open CME Cardiology and MedPage Today, as well as Medical Radio (if you don't speak good "medical English", it will be very helpful as "listening task"!!!)

Student BMJ
You can find very good articles, really educative… if you can trust somebody else's knowledge

ABTS Questions
Free questions for Cardiothoracic surgery self-assessment

PAID APPS

Grays Anatomy-HD deluxe edition
With only 0,79 euros the FULL Grays Anatomy with the text!!!! Watch out, you' ll find many grays anatomy, but not full and not so cheap. I don't know if it's the best, but I highly recommend it!!!!!!!!

iMurmur
2,39 euros (I'm not sure)
Listen to murmurs you have not listened as a student, or you don't had the time to understand!!! Patients with serious cardiology problems do not have much patience (and I understand them…)

Instant ECG
(cheap too)
The best ECG guide with very good pictures and text

Differential Diagnosis from BMJ
The best best best best differential diagnosis, although a bit expensive (5,99 euros), because it' s accurate, it's from BMJ (so, it's reliable) and also it offers very very good features (differentiating signs/symptoms, differentiating tests, brief history and exam as well as the first "must be done" diagnostic test and the emergency or dangerous possible diagnosis flagged so that you never forget them even if it's uncommon)
I do not recommend Med Student onExamination, too expensive for what it offers. But I do recommend this DDx!

Radiopaedia
Very good but a bit expensive. The tests and images are close to perfection. It costs 3,99 euros for each part (and it's six parts).
If you are a med student, I recommend downloading the lite versions and use as a main database the iRadiology!

I'm sure all this was helpful!!!!!!!!
Please, I'm searching for codes from Epocrates or anything else serial numbers for good handbooks! I WOULD BE GRATEFUL if anybody could help me! Please send me a private message! Thank you in advance!

WOW!!! You guys ROCK :thumbup::thumbup:

BTW

Epocrates is still giving out for free ($159 value) Epocrates Essentials to med students at participating schools... Lobby for your school to participate if it doesn't already.

Essentials is so good that I'm might have to lobby for the Android version if Epocrates doesn't release that soon.

The company says: "Epocrates Essentials is a mobile application that offers the drug, disease, and diagnostic tools"

Just got an email related to sharing codes for free Essentials. My answer is below in case helpful for any other out there:

Epocrates doesn't actually provide codes. You enter in your email address (.edu), and if your school partcipates and you are a verified student, then your Epocrates Essentials is activated for free. After an email address has already been verified 1x, it can't be used again... not even to get another copy of Epocrates Essentials... not even to get another platform of Essentials (for example, Palm versus Windows Mobile Device files)

Try lobbying your school so that you are all given Epocrates Essential. Maybe write to Epocrates, the company, because they can benefit from giving you Essentials for free... that is, if you are happy with the free product, then you would give Epocrates free advertising.

Good luck!

This is a useful and FREE app for those dealing with newborn infants and jaundice.

Designed by a pediatrician, BiliCalc uses the American Academy of Pediatrics 2004 "Management of Hyperbilirubinemia in Infants Greater than 35 Weeks of Age" to calculate the threshold for starting phototherapy based on the patient's age, bilirubin level, and neurotoxicity risk. In addition, it will also tell you the patient's risk zone using the Bhutani Nomogram.

This program allows you to input the infant's age at time of lab or manually input both the birth date and hour as well as lab date and hour. The app has a direct link to source journal articles, nomograms, and a list of the neurotoxicity risk factors. Supports US and SI units (mg/dL and µmol/L).

Intended for use by pediatricians, neonatologists, physicians, medical students, and nurses who treat newborn infants in the hospital and as outpatients.

Hey everyone, I'm a longtime reader here an SD but I don't post much. I wrote an iphone app to help myself study medical terminology and thought it might be useful to a few of you out there. It's $0.99 but I got 25 free codes for anyone who is interested in trying it out. PM me and I'll send you a code.

Scholar Reader is a reading assistant / personal dictionary. You paste an article in to the app and then when you read, if there is a word you don’t know, you double tap for the definition. This definition is then added to your personal dictionary which you can later reference or email to yourself to study offline. I use it mainly for reading NEJM case studies each week.

Looks like this thread is dying out. It was helpful for me and used the app recommendations given, thanks! Here is a new one for medical education! From the App store description:

iEye Retina is an exciting, practical application that teaches you how to recognize abnormal retinas with an ophthalmoscope. Without a doubt, the images contained in iEye Retina’s library will be seen in clinic. The abnormal retinas are presented in a rapid quiz format and are organized according to clinical relevance and which will be encountered most frequently. For each image, you have the option to highlight key
findings that make retinal pathologies distinguishable. iEye Retina also includes options to create custom quizzes and to see specific images from the collection.

"Reasoning is over-rated. In time, you will know an abnormal retina not because you reasoned your way to the answer, but because you have seen it before. When confronted by Grandma you don't stop and think, "Hmm, elderly woman, short, white hair, smells funny... AH! By this train of thought, this is Grandma!" No. You know Grandma because you've seen her before."

Just found a new app for MRI called iMRI. Doing rotation in MRI and had trouble with all of the acronyms. This app is a quick reference for the abbreviations and cross references different vendors. Also has some good images. It was really helpful and loaded quickly so I could use it on the fly. Thought it was reasonable at $1.99.

Hey Guys! It's cool to see other medical students making iphone apps =). Even though the medical category is tiny compared to the rest of the app store it still helps with the loans huh?

I'm a 4th year medical student that decided to team up with a software buddy of mine and here are a couple notable apps we came out with the past 2 years. Let us know if you guys find anything that needs fixing. I've included a couple promo codes with each app.

I just came out with a great app on the iPad or iPhone for studying Anatomy, or any biology that has a lot of drawings with lines and names. It's called LabelED, and it's free, so check it out.

Below are some photos showing examples of how you can use it. After you label an image you can test yourself on it in two ways -

Location Quiz - Given a name, pick the right pin on your image
Multiple Choice Quiz - Given a pin, pick the right name from a list of 4

Hello.

I saw in the Apple Store an application that can be useful for all who work in emergency medical and pediatric emergencies.

Pediatric Support it is an application aimed at health professionals. Its objective is to facilitate the handling of an emergency situation involving a child.

This application is based on the medical practice guidelines recommended by medical literature; in vital paediatric European Resuscitation Council (ERC) and American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines from 2010. Also Pediatric Drug Dose Calculation.

The professional must type in the child's Age and Weight, and all functions in the application will be automatically adjusted and calculated.

Here the link to the application https://itunes.apple.com/es/app/pediatric-support/id583303875?mt=8

Hey all!
I've got a new optometry app to share with you. I created this quick optometry reference in paper form during my third year of optometry school for all the things I could never remember. It covers diplopia, nystagmus, anisocoria, visual fields and more. I could never find a good optometry app that contained all this quick reference info so I made it myself and it has been a great resource ever since. I have since updated it with relevant clinical information for everyday use. I hope you find it useful.

Hello.

Now Available on Google Play, the Android version of Pediatric Support.

I attached a link to the website http://www.acform.es/web/apps.html so you can see all the features and functions of the application.

A greeting

My favorite Pediatric apps

GIR Calc
RespCalc
NeoFax

First 2 are free and NeoFax is pricey but worth it if you're on the NICU.

I just got this approved for iTunes today -- so it's hot off the press! http://clincalc.com/mobile/FlashRX.aspx

FlashRX is a flashcard and quiz-based educational tool for healthcare students and professionals to learn the top 200 medications in the outpatient setting (Top 200 Drugs).

Available for iPhone and Android -- includes the useful bits of information you would need to know for the 200 most common or unique/emerging drugs. Each drug entry includes its brand name, generic name, generic pronunciation (phonetic spelling and actual recorded audio), drug class, indications, adverse effects, and typical dosing.

If you're interested, download links are available at the product page (which includes more info and screenshots): http://clincalc.com/mobile/FlashRX.aspx

For iPhone users, check out the promo codes below. If you like the app, please tell a friend!

FetalGrowth: app for iPhone & iPad, is a must have app for any OBGYN! This is the most accurate tool I have used so far for computing fetal weight percentiles, as it uses fully customizable statistical models of fetal weight, unlike most basic growth charts you may find on the Internet. Great for tracking fetal growth during pregnancy, as well.

Hey all.

For those looking for a good clinical microbiology app may I recommend: Micropedia?

It's a free review of almost 200 medically relevant microbes covering basic micro, epidemiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, etc. Plus there's a quiz app to boot! Also gets updated with new bugs and emerging diseases from time to time as well. Oh and also new quiz questions. It's pretty great.

Available on iPhone and Android (slightly older version currently.)

A few battle-tested, high-value options for emergency medicine (all for iOS):

10 Second EM ($4.99). This app is a godsend for rapid EM decision tools, grouped by affected system. Includes NEXUS and Canadian C-Spine evaluation tools, Ottawa Ankle, NIHSS, vent settings, drips, ECG interpretation, peds, tox, and a whole smorgasbord more. Interface is very 1990s, but super fast and easy to find what you're looking for.

Qx Calculate (Free). Exactly What It Says On The Tin. A suite of free clinical calculators.

Qx Read (Free to abstract, links to your institution library privileges for full text). A research paper aggregator. You can also build "collections" of papers and share them with other users - great for journal clubs.

AgileMD (Free). Flash cards, notes and other clinical resources. I subscribe to Michelle Lin's "Paucis Verbis" flashcard series from Academic Life in Emergency Medicine - a high-value collection of clinical decision tools and pearls.

Pedi STAT ($2.99). Plug in the child's age, weight, crown-rump length or Broselow Tape color zone, and it'll give you all your drug dosing, equipment sizes, vent settings and more.

'Orthopedic OSCE' app available on iTunes

The book helps to develop orthopedic clinical skills and for OSCE exams. This app has chapters on communication skills, history gathering, clinical examination, Evaluation of imaging studies and Orthopedic procedures and implants.
