Kansas City University (KCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I must have seen that form in the first place then. I had been planning on getting them all done. I was hoping to be able to wait to get those titers done along with my Hep B once I finish the series. That wouldn't be until sometime in June though and they want me to get the MMR and Varicella done by the May 1 deadline, unfortunately.

I found a couple of sites online that have next day results and are rather inexpensive. All costs are included and I verified that they are quantitative tests. Labreqs.com was one of the cheapest.

I have this problem too. Unfortunately I will have to get my MMR titer now... then wait until my Hep B series is done in like June or July to get another titer [meaning another blood draw] at that time.

BOO NEEDLES

So I thought the titers KCU was asking us to get was a bit excessive, but it turns out it was actually really useful in my situation. Even though I received the entire HepB series as a child, my titer showed I didn't have immunity, so I'm starting the series over again.

You can get all the pieces separately or borrow them but you definitely need to have all of the equipment. In my opinion, it's a lot easier to have your own because you'll use it and you might be in the same lab group as friends so you might not be able to switch easily. Reflex hammers and tuning forks are decently priced in the bookstore if you need them last minute.

Ditto, it doesn't help though that my health insurance coverage and primary care is in a different state...

Yeah, the hepB is very inconsistent. Many people will never gain immunity and even those who do usually don't maintain immunity for the length of time they suggest the vaccine provides.

Just wanted to use my experience as a reminder for those still getting their immunizations (specifically titers). Make sure your lab provides QUANTITATIVE titer results and not just "positive" or "negative" immunity. My primary doctor told me that he's never been able to order for quantitative titer results so now I need find a lab that does.

Like I said in an earlier post, I found several online companies that you can order titers through and have blood drawn at a local lab. I will be using labreqs.com and I have verified with them that their titers are quantitative. In fact, they specified their services are used by many students for school required titers. They have an "immunity panel" that tests everything we are required to submit for $129.

wait so if its not quantitative.. no dice?

True, my clinic's lab did a qualitative test, luckily I called and they were able to run a quantitative analysis on the leftover blood sample.

I don't want to be stuck with a needle, unless I have to!

So... like some other people here, I got my titer results back and found out I don't have immunity to HepB and need to get the series again. Obviously I won't be able to make the deadline of May 1 for the immunizations since I have to wait a minimum of 6 weeks after the last HepB vaccine to get titer results. Will KCU grant an extension if I explain my situation?

Yes, I had a similar situation. Email or call them though by May 1st. They will probably want the rest of the titers/forms and you'll have to send in the stuff again after your series/titer in the future.

@exodian1 I spoke with admissions regarding this same issue. I was told I still had to complete the Varicella and MMR titers for submission on May 1st. If you are waiting due to lack of immunity, you will have to retest later.

However, to those who are nearly finished with their series. I spoke with admissions just a few minutes ago and asked if it were possible for me to go ahead and have the titer done for HepB even though my last shot is this week. So basically get the titer done maybe the day after my last shot. I asked, if I demonstrated immunity if that titer would suffice for the requirements despite not being drawn 6 weeks after the 3rd shot. They told me it would in fact count. My reason for asking was obviously due to cost. The locations I am considering for the titer charge only $10-20 more for the panel test than if I get MMR and Varicella alone and return for the HepB later. Thus, I will be having the panel done anyway and, if I luck out and demonstrate immunity, I'll be done and won't need to have a titer done again later.

Hope that helps!

Current COB student here. When I got my quantitative lab results back regarding HepB, I did not have enough antibodies. So admissions told me to restart the series and as long as I had restarted the series before school started, I'd be fine. They just want to make sure you are on track. I wasn't able to get my last shot until December when I went home and then you have to wait a month or so before getting a titer. I literally got my titer done within the last month. Admissions just wants to be kept up-to-date with your immunizations. Luckily, I now have a LOT of antibodies so I'm good.

Three years ago I got the Hep B titer done for EMT school and it was negative so I had to get a booster. I didn't repeat the whole series. I just had my titers done a few weeks ago and my Hep B was fine, so hopefully yours will turn up positive too!

wait so if its not quantitative.. no dice?

for my MMR titer... they did quantitative for the mumps and measles... but qualitative for the rubella... WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

gonna try to figure this out; edit: should be okay!

Does anyone know when we would find out about how the students did on Step 1 with the new curriculum?

Hey! When is the actual first day of class here?

August 1. Enjoy your time off while you can. :)

Seriously! the year will be crazy stressful but once you get to that point where youve finished anatomy and pcm and os lab you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Kind of off topic, but if anyone likes Drake he'll be performing at Kansas City on July 23 for his Summer Sixteen tour.

So my lab work just came back and it says my hep b antibodies were non reactive (i.e., too low) and I have to re do my series. Since it is 6 months it wont be done and able to be tested again until october. Will I not be able to matriculate because of this? does anyone have any information that could help me out?

I am in the same boat. No worries! Just contact administration and they will adjust your timeline!

Also, look at the KCU 2020 class page on here. It has more info!!

anybody know what happens if we dont have our vaccinations by May 1?

I have everything except for my varicella and hep B titers.........

Do any second years have powerpoints/notes from their first and second years they'd be willing to share? My brother in law went to KUMed and received a file containing all notes and handouts received for prior classes during years 1 and 2. He gave them to me, but obviously I would prefer having the materials specific to KCU.

Could send you some stuff but the issue is they change their slides and learning objectives on a year to year basis.

It's still helpful! Even additional information is good to study. If they thought it was important enough to cover this year then, as far as I'm concerned, it's still important even if they pull it next year!

Hey just wondering, if I were to walk from the campus to Century Towers, after the sun has already set, how safe would I be? Will the campus security escort me from campus to Century Towers? I downloaded an app called "spotcrime" a couple of days ago, and I was quite shocked to see the crime rates around the campus area. There are assault, robbery, rape, and other violent crime incidences, and I am a little worried.

I know having a ton of resources can seem useful, but I promise the best thing you can do is take your own notes. I felt the same way before starting school. Luckily, the professors always give out the powerpoints and some even provide outlines. Until August, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the time off haha. You'll figure things out when you get here!

I'm not sure how late you're planning to walk back, but I've walked back after the sun has set (and before the sun has risen lol) and haven't had issues. Campus security will escort you if you go to their office as you leave campus and they're always driving around the neighborhood. They also have a Rave Alert system that texts all students if something is happening near campus. If you're ever worried, just give them a call before walking back, the students are their priority.

I agree. When you have so many resources you will get overwhelmed and not know what to study. Use the Powerpoints that you are given and you will be good.

So was just reminded that I don't believe we are allowed to release anything to you all (based on some agreement we sign during orientation).

And I do agree with mammit and synapticdoctah on this one. If I gave you all the notes it would be like me handing you the Moores Clinical Anatomy textbook and you saying "I'm going to read to whole thing to do well in anatomy" which be such a time sink (and time is never on your side here).

Once classes hit we can def send you any supplements we had (practice questions and what not)!

Wow that's strange. I can't imagine what harm having powerpoint would do. Would never have thought it would be forbidden.

Oh well, I have covered much of the material already in any case. I just planned to begin reviewing and adding any extra information this summer since I am not taking any classes myself. I'm still teaching 3 classes and wanted to use my extra time sitting at the school studying leisurely.

Thank you for all the replies. I guess I'll just start with the texts we'll use in the early sections for first year at KCU and read cover to cover! No real hardship since I love reading and studying. They begin with biochem and genetics....is that correct?

Let's be honest the crime in this area is staggering. I think we've been alerted to 4-5 armed robberies in the vicinity in the last 3 weeks. You constantly hear sirens and a few days we watched a man get arrested by no less than 8 police officers. That being said I have never had an issue, nobody I know of has had an issue, and the campus security does a great job. I wouldn't sit out on the side walk in the middle of the night or visit the convenience store across the street but I've never felt safety was an issue here at Kaaayyyy Ceeeeee Yuuuuuuu(inside joke)

I am not sure why it is against policy either, but they do make it clear in orientation that we aren't allowed to do that (and idk why). They also say we can't take pictures of the slides in class (for the same reason).

Yes, you will start with MCM (biochem/genetics) and then move into immunology.

None of us had to read any textbook cover to cover to get an A in the courses. And believe me when I say doing so will not get you an A haha. It's about figuring out what the professors want, which particular clinical tie ins will be testable.

Trust me. Enjoy what's left of your summer and do not read Moore's or Grays, or Lippincot's or Pannini's Medical Biochem book as "summer reading". You WILL burn out.

In terms of scheduling: you will learn biochem, cell bio, mol bio, and genetics in three weeks (MCM). Everything about biochem plus all relevant clinical material will be given that first week and your exam will be on Monday. Next you will learn all of immunology in two weeks. Then things actually ramp up in MSK. Throw in gross anatomy lab time, PCM/OS lab time and comps, Bioethics tests, Bioinformatics tests, as well as Grand Rounds and med school "actually starts".

Thank you for the info! Appreciate you taking the time out to provide input. Alternative perspectives are always good to have.

It's not really just about getting an A, though that would be nice. I love learning and I read textbooks and journal articles for my enjoyment, when I have time! Science and medicine excite me, so reading extra material, even if it's not what the professors are going to specifically ask about on exams, fits right in.

Plus, I haven't had a summer (like back in the days before college) for 15 years. Graduate school, work in research labs, and teaching collegiate level courses has left no room for vacations and now having 2 kids means even less time for them! I don't miss them really as I tend to get bored quickly when I have nothing mentally stimulating to

Next you will learn all of immunology in two weeks. .
Sounds like what I do to my microbiology lecture students!
