This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How long does anyone think it would take to get an ii if the secondary was confirmed as complete on 11/20?

Woo now it feels more real! Finally got my actual acceptance e-mail.

How long after you got that e-mail did you all receive the "additional information" needed to secure your seats for the entering class of 2015?

When are you interviewing?

The date they gave me was 2/12. However, I go to college in Kansas City, so they asked me if I was interested in being put on a cancellation notice. So who knows when my actual interview will be! I'm hoping sooner than later!

I've been hearing more and more people talk about "having a snow vehicle."

2002 Toyota Tacoma
2011 Scion tC

Are these "snow cars" or are my fiancé and I going to slide off the slippery slopes into the abyss in KC

Living in a pretty snowy place, I can say the vehicle is not as important as the tires. You can have a minicoop and be fine with some good tires.

Does it matter wether it's rear or front wheel driven?
I mean obviously the best is all wheel, then front wheel, then in last place is rear wheel. But is it worth buying a new car over? Absolutely not... I lived in Maryland for many years where ice and hills are more common than snow. I have experienced many spin outs, have rolled a car, etc. Now I live in Wisconsin where snow is more prevalent than ice, and it is much more flat.

In both places, the best advice is just to have good tires and drive slowly and cautiously when the roads are goofy. Also to remember that 0.5-1inch of snow is actually more dangerous than 6 inches, and thats how a lot of people crash. They think "oh its just a flurry" and then keep driving recklessly. The reality is that a little bit of snow is just as slippery as 6 inches, but the difference is that with 6 inches you have "tracks" that you can sort of follow - the snow actually supports the edges of your tires and keeps you in line. You can treat an inch of snow the same as you do black ice, both will cause you to spin out.

So specifically for KC, I hear it is more similar to my experiences in Maryland where it is not very deep snow, and if it does snow a lot, it melts fast and freezes at night. So you dont necessarily need power or four wheel drive to make it through, you simply need good tires and a smart head to take it slow. A four wheel drive car with crappy tires and a fast driver will crash more than a rear wheel safe driver with decent tires.

If it was like a place like Michigan or someplace that gets a ton of snow then I would say sure you need a 4 wheel drive car, because you do need that power to get through the deeper stuff. But not so much for KC, your biggest trials will likely be slowly scaling those small icy hills before the salt is laid... Best thing you can do in that situation is just be slow and steady and have tires with decent tread to grip the ground.

Anybody interviewing recently know when they are going to review applicants for December? I'm on the waitlist and am wondering when the December review will be...

Awesome Sauce gave solid advice, but I would say that if you have never driven in snow or ice before then do NOT get a car that is rear wheel drive. I have one and it is significantly harder to drive in inclement weather, even when there is just a little snow and especially when it is icy. If you're car is rear-wheel you might want to look into other cars. Otherwise just go with what you've got and be smart.

Most models today are RWD, but you can find FWD and AWD on some models.

Unless you're buying something German, say an Audi, BMW, or Benz, which are all RWD/AWD, most american/japenese cars you find today are predominately FWD . Mostly all the ford/toyotas/hondas/chevy/ cars you see are all FWD unless you get them with an AWD option if available.

http://www.rearwheeldrive.org/rwd/rwdlist.html

I'm not sure how up to date this site is but it seems about right. There are very few models that are RWD if you're looking at major car brands here in the US.

It took 6 days for them to send me the link, although, if you just type "KCUMB matriculation" into google it will take you to the page they send you the link for. All the forms and requirements are located there. The only other thing the email will have is your ID number which you will need to pay the fees.

So I know that the neighborhood is kinda sketchy, but I mean as far as walking across the street from say from Century Towers or a parking lot to campus, is it pretty safe? I'm talking mid-day/normal hours and not at 2AM and safe as in you don't need to worry about being approached by weirdos

I have heard it is safe, not to mention the security dudes actually cruise back and forth between CT and campus a lot, especially if people are walking. You can technically have them "escort" you home, whereby they basically drive right behind you haha... At least thats what they said at the interview.

Thanks Sauceome :) I'm having major commitment issues, but I think I am now 97% sure I will be sending in my 1k to KCUMB!! 10 days to change my mind though ;)

But just as a btw, you are definitely best to contact Michelle sparks about living situations. I was hesitant to contact her but within like 2 hours she had literally dozens of places that looked awesome, fit what I wanted, and were definitely cheaper than CT. So you might not even have to deal with the whole walking issue.

I have an idea for how you decide... Flip a coin, if its heads you go to KCUMB. If its tails then pick the coin up and flip it again until its heads. Tehe just kidding, but sort of not... Where else are you thinking about going? You can PM me if you want.

Does she deal with town homes or only apartments?

I spoke to Michelle Sparks very briefly and she's definitely willing to help out! (And she didn't seem limited to just apartments) in the end, I decided CT is probably the best option for me since I'll be coming to KC alone for the most part (the exception being the friends I have started to make haha!). Also, I am absolutely terrified to drive on ice/snow (that's what living in warm climates your whole life does to you) so the fact that I can safely walk between school and CT, especially in the winter, was a huge plus. :D

Haha I've heard that coin thing so much! Your strategy is unique though.

Exactly my thoughts! Coming in not knowing a soul in the midwest, I'd like to start off in a community and build some sort of a support system :) Then second year move to a better place!

Applications to All KCUMB Programs Show Tremendous Growth

More students than ever before are applying for admission to KCUMB’s two colleges.

KCUMB’s College of Osteopathic Medicine leads all osteopathic medical schools for percentage increase in applications as compared with one year earlier. According to data provided by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service (AACOMAS), KCUMB had received 5,287 applications as of Nov. 21, an increase of 36 percent. In fact, KCUMB’s growth in applications is more than twice the average of 17 percent for other colleges of osteopathic medicine.

Numbers for the University’s other degree programs are just as impressive. The one-year bioethics program, which recently became part of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, has received 59 applications compared with only four at the same time last year.

Combined applications to both the one- and two-year biomedical sciences tracks currently stand at 570, compared with only 34 at the same time last year.

Interesting!

Why all the shirts and ties....?

I think it was research day where we had guest speakers. It's one of the few times attendance and appropriate dress was required.

They're obviously not going to post a picture of a normal day when we look like crackheads in sweatpants.

Okay the sweatpants thing was super obvious interview day haha but they did look comfy!

Judging by the fact your ambassadors were the anatomy fellows I'm guessing you interviewed around "PEP Week".

We all felt like **** coming out of MSK and then having to take 3 other exams. You're lucky we were wearing any clothing.

Interview was September 10 so perhaps! yeah after talking to some of you guys you had that "just finished a marathon stoked but burnt the **** out" look. Also saw some kids working a genetics problem that looked terrible haha

Actually, that would have been the week after Immunology and the first week of MSK.

Every block gets harder and harder. Looking back, that block doesn't seem so bad anymore. Now we have 5 finals in 2 weeks.

The MS2 guys have 70 lectures going into their final. That's just insane. I have no idea how they do it but I guess I'll find out next year.

So how many times (if ever) have you said "is this really what I want to do?" when it came to the high volume?

Wow....well good luck with that.

So is there any pathology in first year?

We have a pathology and microbiology section at the end of the spring term.

Haha...I ask myself almost daily what I'm doing....then I have a patient encounter or a PCM lab and I remember a little bit.

Oh really? So is that like an introduction to 2nd year material in that it's all organ systems but path and pharm directed?

Jeeze that's so insane but it's good you are able to remind yourself of why you are doing it.

How much patient time do you get MS1/2?

I'm actually not sure how the sections will be set up. I do think it's to intro us into 2nd year material, but other than that I have no idea.

It's just so much material, and I have a family....so the balance is hard to manage. :) I don't want to scare you, though, it is doable....just hard work. My brain is still trying to get into marathon gear....

We have had 3 standardized patient interviews and will have 3 more 2nd term (not real patients) plus our labs and simulations. It's not actual patient contact but it's more the stuff you do as a clinician so it reminds me that I'm not a book drone forever!!

I have no idea how you guys with families manage to balance everything out.

Have you done the Don Bosco (PCM experience) thing yet? Honestly that experience was amazing. It really reminded me why I decided to get into medicine.

I am looking forward to that Senior experience thing!

As far as family, it's all about discipline ( a lot of it) and balance as @ Eremba Don't want to fail med school, but I have decided a long time ago that I wouldn't be part of the statistics of broken families during this journey. Honestly, they keep me grounded! Nothing like a child to remind you that there is real life outside of anatomy lab! ;-)

I don't get to do that until May.

But score 1 was awesome. I can't wait to do that again. Lol.

Yeah...I couldn't do this without my family. So I'm willing to give up the A/A- required study hours to spend time with my kiddo and husband.

Hey guys, I was wanted a couple of opinions about caring for a dog during medical school. I had dogs growing up, and haven't had one since I started undergrad so I thought about getting one once I got to Kansas City. It sound like most apartments in the area allow you to have one or two small dogs, and I figured I would adopt a slightly older dog that wouldn't need as much attention. Do any current students on here have dogs, and if so, how do you deal with leaving them home all day?

Would anyone mind posting pictures of the fitness center, please?
