I'm thinking about applying here next year, but I won't have Genetics or Biochemistry (only have A&p1 as an upper level bio by then) taken by then. Would that be OK for KCUMB, if I just tell them that I'll take it in Spring of 2013?

Yeah, KCUMB is definitely on my top schools list as well.
Interview September 26th! anybody else schedule this date?
Does anyone know if you can substitute the premed advisory letter with a letter from science professor? Or are they pretty strict about their requirements? I have letters from two science professors and a DO. Thanks
In short yes, you may. This is also what I used with the exception of a MD letter.
I'll be there the 26th! See ya' there!Interview September 26th! anybody else schedule this date?
I just got my interview offer today, anyone know any details about their interview process? Individual, group etc. Any help is appreciatedIf you get an interview, it's also REALLY good news because they accept like 90% of people they interview.

Those with the most recent interview invites, will you post the date your application was complete? I'm trying to get an idea of the timeline. Thank you!
I'm not a current student, but it takes a week or two at mostto current students, how long after ur interview date does it take to get the final decision?
I'm a first year here and I'm glad I picked this school. Honestly. Make sure you take Genetics, Biochem, Micro, and Immunology (if possible) before you come! Actually try to remember some of it too! That will save you an enormous amount of headache in FOM. Message me with any questions, i'm more than happy to help. Good luck! It is such a relief getting in.
hey guys =)
just booked a room at the holiday inn express -westport. Sadly, they don't provide shuttle service from/to the airport. for those of you who've stayed at this hotel before, how did you get about coming from/to the airport.. taxi, or shuttle? I checked the Super Shuttle pricing, it would be around 38 for the roundtrip. It seems like the best way to go with this...
Btw, this hotel does have a discounted rate - 89 for one king or two doubles...
I think this sounds like the best idea, IMHO. 38 bucks sounds pretty good. Plus once you're at the hotel it seems like anything would be a close cab ride away, if you wanted to check out KC a bit. Good luck!
Hey hey!
Anybody staying at the Holiday Inn Express Westport Plaza on Sept. 25th (or nearby) and interviewing on the 26th? We should all grab dinner together if possible.
Also, my flight back to Cali is at 530...I'm super worried. I heard interviews begin at 2 and last ~30-60 mins. So if I'm the last interviewee (crosses fingers I'm not!), then it might be 4 before I can leave for the airport. On top of that, I'm thinking of taking the Super Shuttle but I'm not sure if it'll pick me up from KCUMB. What do you guys think? Am I pushing it? Side note - I'm not checking bags so I can run right to the gate and save some time!
I'm in a similar position as you, except my interview is on the 29th and I'll be in the Hampton.
What I'm going to do is check out of the hotel in the morning before I go to DMU. Then once the interview is done (maybe around 4 latest), I'm going to take a cab from DMU to the airport (which should only be a 20-25 minute drive), meaning I'll get to the airport latest at 4:45. You'll have a good 30 minutes to get to your gate. I think you'll have plenty of time.
OHH wait.. I just realized if you're taking a cab, you probably won't be able to bring all your things with you to DMU, lol. I still think you'll have time to go back to the hotel after your interview, grab your things (assuming you pack the night before), and head to the airport. I think DMU said something about if you have an early evening flight, you can call them in advance and they'll accommodate for you.
Thanks Iliketoytles for the tip...maybe if I get an interview to DMU I'll do that but I meant the interview at KCUMB.
BAHH, I meant KCUMB, lol. This is the second time I confused the two.
Sorry.
If you are worried about being late for a flight, call the admissions office before your interview and ask if you can have an earlier interview. They are usually pretty good about making adjustments if necessary.
Not sure I can give you the whole answer you are looking for as I am only a month into 1st year at KCUMB, but I specifically chose KCUMB because of the genesis curriculum.
From what I have experienced so far, even in the one part of the curriculum that isn't that systems based (Foundations of Medicine is your starting block and it lasts 4 weeks - then you start systems with musculoskeletal), they really try to build on each others lectures and tie the material together for you. I think this is really important because on boards you are not going to be asked an "anatomy" or "biochemistry" question in isolation. You are going to be given a patient situation that has biochemical, physiological, immunological and microbiologyical data (for example) and you have to come up with the best answer to what's wrong, what drug would you give etc. I think it ties to the real world better and you are better able to assimilate things when you can see how things all interrelate.
So for Foundations of Medicine - we talked about cancer in genetics, biochemistry, pathology and immunology. You could see how all the various elements come into play when someone has cancer. In addition, we had a series of physiology lectures about the autonomic nervous system which was followed by a pharmacology lectures about the drugs that impact the ANS. Much easier to understand what a beta blocker does when you just went over what role beta receptors play in the ANS.
I don't know if this is unique to KCUMB but the support provided by the staff and the professors is unbelieveable. Several will be in an online chat room on the KCUMB website the night before a midterm / final in order to answer last minute questions. Most (all I think) have open door policies so you can go for help on anything. In addition, we were assigned a specific advisor during orientation week and lunch with them then. They then follow up with one on one lunches through out the year to make sure we're doing OK and they encourage us to contact them at any time if we have any thing we want to discuss.
I was a little concerned about security before I got to KCUMB, especially as I live at Century Towers across the street, and the neighborhood isn't the greatest. However, the security team at KCUMB is great. They keep an eye out in the morning and afternoon as students cross from CT to KCUMB. They encourage everyone to call them so they can escort you across to CT if you are alone. They are very good.
One unique area might be the focus KCUMB places on spirtuality in their training. They really want doctors they graduate to understand the spirituality requirements of their patients and well as themselves. I'm not sure I saw such a focus at any other school. You can do some digging on the KCUMB web site and in the course catalog to get a better sense of this.
Hope that helps a bit.
Thanks for the breakdown!! I'm a bit concerned about that last part though. When you refer to spirituality, are you referring to religion/god or more philosophical concepts like ethics? This obviously won't affect whether I decide to go there or not... just curious!
Regardless of your religion, most of your patients will claim some sort of religion, whether it is Christianity, Islam, Atheism, or something else, and that religion typically becomes very important to the person when they are in a situation that requires medical attention. As a doctor, you will have to learn to be sensitive to that, and respect their religion even if you do not agree with their doctrine.
Trust me, I know this very well lol. It's something I talk about a lot with others... open mindedness is the best quality anyone can have.

That's good. My point, by the way, is that I imaging that is the approach that KCUMB takes. Not that they are pushing any particular religion - just to be aware of it, and prepared to deal with it.
