Lake Erie (LECOM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thus the cattle car approach to interviews. Finding out that they do their interviews in groups is one of the things that pushed them down on my list. I know there are a lot of applicants and that a lot of interviews have to be conducted, but given the investment that we are making in one another, I really think at least 20-30 minutes of one-on-one time with another person is called for. Seriously, applicants are spending hundreds of dollars to come out to see you and you just process them in a cluster? Unacceptable.

EDIT: This is my opinion because I have been given to believe that the interview is exclusively a group activity. I get that group interaction may have some value in this process, but if it is not supplemented by at least a short one-on-one, I think that speaks volumes about how the school sees and values its students. If there is an individual component, I will rethink my opinion.

I completely understand your points. To be honest, I have never interviewed in a group before. Whether this is done to observe how applicants voice their opinions in a group or to condense the time it takes to interview all the applicants, I am not sure; probably a bit of both.

It is worth noting that the email I received when I was invited for an interview says, "The admissions interview day will begin at 8:00 a.m.and will end around 1:00 p.m. The day will consist of a presentation of the curriculum, an overview of financial aid, and an interview session followed by a tour of the campus. You will have an opportunity to meet with LECOM students while you enjoy a complimentary lunch." If it was strictly an interview and then you left, I would be just as skeptical as you. A curriculum overview is nice, even if it is their way of selling the school. I plan on keeping a good attitude going in and making my judgments once I have experienced the campus. Hopefully I can ask current students questions and get some honest opinions.

Probably was not my #1 choice coming in either, but I am willing to give them a try if they will do the same for me :) Good luck with your applications

They did that for me last cycle, but for full disclosure, I'm a nontraditional applicant without access to a comittee, so I don't know if that factor made a difference.

CIB says that's ok. I hope it is because I'm also non-trad

Anyone who interviewed 7/18 have any comments?

Just got an II through the portal. Does anyone have an idea of the interview to acceptance ratio?
Stats: 3.55c/3.17s/30 (10,10,10)

Allright, since no one else is responding I figured I would throw my opinion out there. I was not impressed at all by the school and did not like the group interviews. I thought there were too many people in it for the amount of time we had to interview. I mean come on! 8 people in a group and you have an hour to interview us? I felt like half an hour was spent just doing introductions and stating what we already wrote in our personal statements and AACOMAS. What bothered me was all of the interview staff were PhDs. Not a single DO interviewed us that day. There is no way they had time to properly evaluate all of us. My advice to other applicants. Make sure to find a way to stand out and answer your question as best as possible because you wont get a chance to redeem yourself at another question.

The school had a high school vibe to it:
  • Mandatory attendance where they call you if you are not there.
  • Assigned seating
  • Dress Code
  • Cameras everywhere
  • Barely any windows
  • Tiny high school cafeteria
  • Everything including library is closed around 10pm
Normally dress codes and that stuff doesn't bother me but man the school felt very controlling.

The students we met at the lunch were really not enthusiastic and they all pretty much made it clear that "this is the only school I got into, so I'm making the best out of it". Overall I would put this school last on my list. I'm sure the students themselves will make good physicians. They do have high board pass rates and the motivated individuals will find a way to stand out and get those top residencies. However, there are way better schools out there.

Good luck to all those applying.

Did you get a response from them yet? Any information regarding their interview:acceptance ratio?

Anything else other than the typical LECOM draconian law type stuff?

Their averages for the last class was:

3.48 cum GPA
3.36 science GPA
3.61 non science GPA

Avg. MCAT = 27 (9s in all sections)

I believe they said they interview about 1500 applicants. Something that is really troubling about LECOM as well is that they only have a total of 15 rotation spots with UPMC. Thats it. This was according to one of their students.

Edit: This 1500 number might be for all campuses not just LECOM - E

Probably all 3 campuses.

Lecom-Erie and seton hill likely interview 800-900 and Brendenton 600-700.

Seems like high school mixed with prison.

Any weird questions ? How many questions were you asked? I only ask because it was a group of 8 students.

Like I said, most of the time was spent on just introductions. The questions were pretty standard (you can find a list of them in any of the old interview threads). No crazy questions. Typical ethical questions. Like I said, you better answer the one or two questions you get as best as possible and make sure you stand out because you wont get a chance to redeem yourself with any other questions.

I'd like to quickly add (without making excuses for the school) that they have the data to back up the fact that, despite first impressions, it's not a bad school. This isn't Rocky Vista or LMU (not putting them down, just saying they don't have the track record). It might be a pain in the ass, and it might be a last option if it's the only school you're accepted to, but I don't see anything outrageous. From what I've seen you, can get in and get out a doctor, and a specialist to boot. * LECOM has a worse reputation among students than it does among health professionals. Plus holy ---- tuition is worth a few sacrifices for me

That being said, if you're put off by the restrictions, don't go here hoping you'll get used to it, you'll hate the next four years of your life. If you think you can deal with it, you'll be fine ....

*My opinion based on student reviews and match data

I have had the "you have been selected for an interview" message on the portal for a while, any idea when I'll get the email for more information?

Did you have the option to delay receiving their decision until a later date?

With regards to UPMC, things changed recently (2013), so LECOM students can really only rotate at one UPMC location (if at all). This has nothing to do with LECOM though, its a rivalry decision in the ongoing feud between UPMC and Highmark/Allegheny Health (which is a strong $$ funder of LECOM and close affiliate). That said, it is rumored that AGH will be taking more students and will be a year-long rotations affiliate (you can do all your cores there) next year, and it is a strong academic center with tons of ACGME (as well as some AOA) residency programs.

In any case, LECOM has lots of rules and beurocracy, so if you don't think you can get past that, that should be a red flag. And there are plenty of people that are going here as their first choice for a DO school, myself included. Based on people I've talked to at least 1/3 of my class feels that way (only talked to about half the people in my program about it), but they are people that could careless about the rules and chose it for the tuition, curriculum, and location (proximity to home).

Any insight on the type of interview questions you will be asked? I understand its a group interview style, which is either a good thing or a bad thing

Did you get a confirmation email for your interview? Also, why are people who got II later being given dates that are sooner??

You can pick your own dates. They interview on Friday. Guess they just wanted to interview early as possible.

No, the 22nd was the earliest date available when I chose last week. Maybe someone withdrew?

No I didn't. I sure you know but in case you don't know, if you go back to pick a different date it tells when you when your interview is. And I found all the helpful information in the interview I invite email.

For those that interviewed, do we need to bring anything the morning of?

When I go onto the portal, it says my supplemental application is "in progress" and there are a bunch of things on the second page that have the red "required" next to them. My interview also doesn't show up, but I already got the invite and picked the date. Anyone else having this problem? Also, how can I make sure they have my letters?

Interview scheduled at Seton Hill campus 8/21. Anyone else going on this date? I live in Pittsburgh and may have a spare room you could use to save you some money if interested. PM for details.
