Is there any point to ask for a letter of recommendation from the attending I've been working with this summer. The research has been mostly retrospective clinical stuff and things have been going well. I ask because it is my understanding that LOR's should mostly be coming from 3rd or 4th year AI rotations. Would a good letter from this research be useful at all down the road or would it not be a factor? (other then the experience itself and maybe a publication or two that are currently in the works)

I'd keep in touch with the attending and ask closer to 4th year. (Maybe try and stop by during 2nd year as well to continue the research albeit on a part-time basis)

It's a bit odd to receive a LOR request from a student in between 1st and 2nd year.
