Alright, i've been browsing this and other forums on SDN for a few months just because i'm an undergrad student trying to get a feel for what options I may need to consider in the future. I have been a silent observer, and just signed up today because one guy's posts have really started to bug me. Luck's posts have caught my attention, not because of how helpful this guy is, or how insightful his posts are, but just because of how pathetic they are. First of all, this "DO" student or whatever he is must have serious self-esteem problems if he feels the need to waste his own time by going on a forum that has nothing to do with him, and bash other people. Seriously now, to me at least that seems like the biggest loser move ever...Second of all, I would like to point out that everything this Luck guy says is completely idiotic...Beleive me, luck, most if not everyone agrees that attending an American MD program is the best way to go, period. No disagreements can be brought up there. What YOU need to understand is that every year, more and more qualified people apply to US med schools, and thats where these DO programs and Foreign programs come into play- They give deserving people a chance to pursue a great profession and prove themselves worthy of practicing medicine. Furthermore, I would also like to say that the MD degree is MUCH more prestigious than some "DO" degree. That is also an unquestionable statement. Come on now, if you could choose, and be honest here, what would you have on your lab coat..MD or DO?? Ha, thats a no brainer.... Now don't get me wrong here, I'm not justifying going the foreign MD route over the USA DO route, but I feel thats ones own call, either way is perfectly legit. It should also be understood that if you work hard and pass all the tests, a foreign MD, a United States MD, and a US DO will all be practicing physicians in the United States..Isn't that what we are all striving for in the first place?? Additionally, my father is a physician, in fact he's a FMG from India, and he has personally told me that certain busy, desirable hospitals in wealthy areas look down on giving DO's admitting privelages, just because an MD degree is always preferrable to a DO degree. He has even tried helping out his DO friends to get on staff at certain hospitals, and it didn't go through even with his connections, while graduates from Ross and various other foreign schools with good board scores and an MD degree have had NO PROBLEM getting on staff...Hearing that from my father has totally changed my prospective on even considering a DO institution. Lastly, I would like to close by saying that your success in medicine is TOTALLY dependent on your own business skill...You could graduate at the top of your class at Harvard, get into an excellent internal medicine residency, and still earn less than a foreign Internist or specialist who has killer business sense. Now luck, I know your going to say that "As a foreign graduate, your chances of specializing are little to none", and that again is also false. Getting into programs like Radiology, Dermatology, and Opthamology are hard for anyone, even American MD's. But, getting into internal medicine is basically a shoe in for anyone who passes the boards, and Internal medicine is the gateway to many great specialties like Cardiology, Oncology, Gastroenterology, sports medicine, etc. In fact, there are 13 different subspecialties you can choose from providing that you have good board scores and work hard during general internal medicine.
Ughhh... just had to set some things straight with this guy. Finally, look luck we all know that getting into American schools, both DO and MD are harder than foreign schools. Programs like the ones offered in the Caribbean give students a chance to prove themselves and fulfill a lifelong dream of becoming a doctor, and I don't see anything wrong with that at all. If you attend a Caribbean school, pass the tests/boards, you are just as qualified as any other Doctor, period. Afterall, everyone takes the same boards...Caribbean students don't have easier boards buddy...

Peace

This is a violation of TOS and this thread should be closed. To answer some of your questions, I have respect for all doctors. If you're in the US, I feel that DO is a better choice than a caribbean MD.

I would rather have DO on my coat then MD since you asked. Just because of one incident that your father had does not make the world fall down for DOs as you think it may. As you said, the letters don't make the physician, the physician makes the physician.

Looking at your post history I see this is your one and only post. It appears you created a name just to make this post about me. You must be Sandeep incarnate.

Don't get mad at me just because I hold a certain point of view because there will always be people in this world who think different from you. Good luck in your future endeavors. :luck:
