Merry Christmas everyone :hardy: ,

And thank you NileBDS for your detailed reply.

Does this alternative mean that someone with a foreign dental degree can get into a residency (generally specialty) in the US, and after that S/he can work as an specialist (say like ortho)?

Till now I thought that only those who want to get involved in the academics can enroll in a post-graduate program (mostly PhD, MS, etc.) and NOT SPECIALTIES like pedo, ortho, perio, etc.

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Hi Igores07,
Have you found the answer for your question about doing residency in US as a FTD and after residency in US working as a specialist in private practice? Is that possible in CA or in other states?

Hi
I am also interested in clinical MS at Alabama university. But I think the prosthodontics program need student from accredited college.

I m doi my masters in endodontics in India.. I would like to settl in the US which is my dream always..;) Should I need to take DDS and if i want to practice as an endodntist there in the US, should i need to Residency in Endo there..??
please help me guys.. thankyou very much :)

hi,
yes i also did my MDS in endo from GDC , ahm.
i am presently doing DMD at PENN school of dental medicine.
yes to practice as an endodontist in US, u need to complete a residency in endo from US dental school, most of such programs require you to first complete a dds/dmd from a US dental school which accepts foreign trained dentists.
so in short, the journey is quite long & very very expensive.

Why do you want to do Oral bio! ADA doesnt recognise any Oral bio program!
get into a cheap mph and give your boards.....:)
sorry to be blunt! dont waste your time!
there is NO scope after oral bio! untill you do a phd....and after that also pure academics!
Thanks!

Thanks Drrohit81 for the reply............your ans. was a great help to me.

But I have heard that after doing MPH also there are no jobs, only few in CA. That's why I chose to do Oral Bio..
Are you sure Oral Bio. programs are not recognized by ADA.
Or Biomaterials will be better thanOral Bio.

Please reply.

HI,
I WANTED TO KNOW HOW MUCH A PhD OR MS in oral biology pay once we finish the course??? and is there hardcore lab work involved .

Hello Subh,
I am applying this October. They accept International students. You need not be a student from accredated Dental School. Please go to the Website,www.dental.uab.edu and check again.

If anybody is interested in dental informatics there is a two year Masters program in biomedical informatics (with concentration in dental informatics) at the University of Pittsburgh. In this program, financial support from the NIDCR/NIH is available to eligible individuals (US citizens and permanent residents). NIDCR/NIH funds provide for a stipend, tuition, fees and health insurance support, travel subsidies, and a state-of-the-art computer. The program also offers a limited number of positions for self-funded trainees. Applications are due by spring 2009. The program begins in August 2009. More information is available at http://www.dental.pitt.edu/informatics/postgrad.php

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) also offers a loan repayment program for qualifying educational loans. This program is open to trainees through a separate application and award by the NIH. The program provides a maximum of $35,000 per year for three years in loan repayments.

Hi,

ADMISSION TO THE M.S. PROGRAM IN BIOLOGY/ORAL BIOLOGY

The M.S. Program in Biology/Oral Biology seeks candidates of the highest caliber to make a major contribution to the newer knowledge in oral biology.

The program is open to candidates with a dental degree from a US or international dental school, or with a baccalaureate or equivalent. Candidates are chosen based on their academic records, recommendations, and an assessment of the candidate's scientific potential. All candidates must meet the requirements of the Department of Biology of the Graduate School of Arts & Science. Candidates should have a strong background in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics. A supervisor, who is a member of the graduate faculty, is assigned to each student to closely monitor the student's progress.

Applicants who are graduates of international dental schools are required to submit evidence of all previous education and training. This should include 1) a copy of the applicant's diploma from a dental school listed and approved by the World Health Organization (copy of original and certified English translation); 2) a copy of the applicant's school transcript (copy of original and certified English translation); and 3) a letter of recommendation from the dean or other senior faculty member. The applicant must also understand and be able to communicate in English, both written and oral. Accordingly, every applicant whose native language is other than English is required to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and to submit the scores. Scores of less than 230 are generally not acceptable.

Candidates are encouraged to apply one full year prior to the starting date of the program, as listed in the bulletin of the Graduate School of Arts & Science. The M.S. Program in Biology/Oral Biology usually accepts candidates for admission for the fall term but spring term admissions are also decided on an individual basis.

Students are awarded the M.S. degree upon 1) completion of 36 credits with an average of B or better, of which 8 credits must be based on an original research thesis which is mandatory, and 2) completion and defense of an original research project.

Hi, i completed my BDS in 2005 and MDS orthodontics in May 2009 from India. I applied for MS orthodontics program in 4 universities but didn't receive interview call from any of the universities. My BDS GPA was 3.94 and GRE score was 1290. but i had not taken NBDE . Is this the reason for my non-acceptance inspite of having good 3 yrs of experience in Ortho?can anyone guide me in this direction? now am planning to take NBDE part 1..how can i improve my chances of admission for next year?

Hi Ritu..

Great profile..Getting a MS orthodontics in usa even for a foreigh dentist who have finished DDS/DMD from USA is virtually impossible..as these seats r given only to americans...So realistically speaking u as a BDS for MS ortho would be a monumental task...

I am sorry to be blunt..i am just telling u some facts which some people may not tell u here on sdn as blunt as me...I have nbde part 1 score of 93 and UIC Batch of 2012..Even then cant dream of MS ortho here unless i am damm lucky..

@ drjughead03

thanks for ur reply..i guess u r right ortho program is very very competitive and for foreign dentists its next to impossible..

Hi,
I thought that we can start a thread on this as many students would like to know about "Masters Program "that is offered by many universities to Foreign Trained Dentists. If you have any information regarding any other programs , please do post your info , and if anyone is already enrolled in such a program , kindly post your information also.
Thanks
Toothlaw

I have 98 TOEFL IBT, passed NBDE1, OK ECE, not bad GRE, Pass-Match, many letters of recommendations.

Applied to 34 different dental departments at many schools nation wide and that cost me $3000. NONE of them asked me for an interview (GOT REJECTED) so do NOT even think of going down that road, they are just after your application fee. SAD BUT TRUE

hi

i just wanted to know that if u have taken yr dental boards and have done yr mph than can u practice as a dentist in usa.....and what is the connection between the two........what r the job options....plz reply

. If you are a foreign trained dentist (without DDS/DMD from USA or Canada) and have an excellent application package ..for a graduate program ..(high scores in TOEFL, NBDE 1&2, GRE, high GPA, experience, recommendations & publications) then, there is a chance for you to get accepted in a graduate dental program other than: Ortho, Endo, Perio,..Oral Surgery and.. Pros (i.e. Dental Materials, Public Health, Oral Biology, Radiology, AEGD, GPR or maybe Pedo...etc)..
.
The graduate programs in USA in general take only applicants form accredited dental schools by the ADA or an overseas international student (outside USA and they prefer Europeans).

Sadly I have learned that after I have wasted a LOT of money, time, stress and more over EMOTIONS. Also stay away from Rednecks schools (Alabama, Mississippi & Georgia) as I have been humiliated by UAB (University of Alabama Dental School).
.

. I hope if I read such post one year ago so I wouldn't hurt myself with the graduate programs, focused on the foreign trained dentist programs/applying all the way back to dental school and that's why I am forwarding my experience to the foreign trained dentists who share the same frustration as I do.

Here we are not dentists, looked down at our experience, education and NOT welcomed.
.
.Sad but true. .

Hey,
I am new to this forum. I completed my BDS from India in March 2010 and am applying to the DDS programs this yr.
I luckily got into a Research fellowship program in orthodontics which is a one yr program at a dental school here.

I need some honest opinion on how useful this fellowship can be for me to get into a DDS or MDS program. I am really confused as the tution for the program is a lot. Its 40000 for a yr. But my nbde part 1 score is not that great. Its only 82. Does anyone know anybody who did something like this and got in???

can you tell us which school did you apply ? Also, the procedure thru which you recvd fellowship. That sure is a good thing in my opinion. But I'm not sure of what the next step would be after fellowship. But depending on the state which you are residing in you might be able to start your practice.

I have heard of a person who took this route at NYU and was successfull but it seems like an expensive proposition aswell as risky. Let us know where you have been granted admission please.

drjennix,

I have a question, I am applying for and AEGD and MS combined program at UR EIOH. I am a US citizen FTD with 12 years of clinical experience in general and implant dentistry combined with teaching and clinical research. I have lectured in many countries in South and Central America and want to pursue a career as a professor and lecturer in the US. I am going for an MS because I see that in the US it is a must if you want to be in academia, Is that combined program OK for a career as a professor?

hi does any one have idea about courses Msc in physiology, anatomy or bichomistry in texas ???

Mario, - Your credentials are very impressive. I would think that with your qulifications you may be able to secure a professorship/lecturer position even without going through additional education in the US. Have you tried to apply for tenure-track and non-tenure-track openings at US schools? Another option could be a post-doc position followed by applying for professor/lecturer positions. Have you considered any of these options? Good luck to you!

Zobarste,
Thank you for the info. What is a Tenure Track and non Tenure track position? I have applied for positions in restorative dentistry at NOVA southeastern and at UF at Gainesville and both have accepted my application for review but both turned me down. I have found that may dental schools or AEGD GPR programs request for the dentist to be DDS, DMD or equivalent and in the US a FTD degree is not considered equivalent.... I am wrong?

Regards

Mario, - I don't really know the answer to your last question. I know many people with, let's say, foreign PhDs (not in dental field) who got post-doc and even professorship positions here, in the US. Possibly in dentistry it works differently. I'd suggest you to call your departments of interest, schedule appointments with their chairs, and discuss your situation. maybe you're right, and they'll tell you that you need US DDS degree.
Tenure track stands for assistant professor - associate professor - full professor track (most desirable in academia). Non-tenure track positions include research assistant professors, lecturers and clinical professors as well (I believe). Post-doc positions are temporary ones you do working with a professor after you complete your doctotrate (typically PhD or DDS). Post-docs many times are a stepping stone towards a tenure-track position. I hope this info will help.
