Match Day 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Quote from UTSW website. No full list that I can find yet.

“We had a large group of students entering residency programs in primary care specialties such as internal medicine (53) and pediatrics (33),” said Dr. Mihalic, “but we also had a lot of students entering specialty residencies such as dermatology (4), emergency medicine (16), radiology (9), and plastic surgery (2). In many of these very competitive specialties, our students did very well.”

Yeah, what a lie. Most who are entering those "primary care specialties" like IM and Peds will end up specializing, period. Also with the later groups, a lot of those groups are highly self-selected. I'm sure one of the requirement of being a Dean of Student Affairs is to brag no matter how blatantly obvious that you're lying.

Point taken, but statistically, you're unlikely to be right about those on the peds path -- although the percent who do has been increasing over the years, the majority of pediatricians still do not sub-specialize.

Does that mean they haven't matched or is the research more of a voluntary thing?

You cannot know without more information.

Every year you can expect a few people will defer participation in the match b/c they want to do research to be more competitive in a research-heavy field or for top programs, because they lack LORs in a field they were late to decide on, due to uncertainty about what specialty to pursue, or for other life circumstances (for instance a spouse will not be finishing grad school for a year and they want to move together). Likewise, some will withdraw from the match after submitting ERAS. Only some of this is driven by failing to match or failing to obtain good/enough interview offers. Many schools will not report these students on their match list, so you can't necessarily judge school A against B for not having anybody going into a research year.

There are also plenty of MD/PhDs who defer residency or decide not to do it, b/c contrary to what they thought when they started this process, they have no desire to ever practice medicine. I know at least 3 college classmates who are MD/PhDs who decided before entering clinical rotations that they didn't even care about the MD anymore. However, they did not withdraw b/c they'd have to pay back tuition for their first 2 years of med school. They can also be listed in the match list under labels like "non-clinical/industry/consulting."

Thanks for the info! Btw, can you make the decision to do an extra year prior to your 3rd or 4th year, or is it more common to do it after the 4th? I'm guessing this probably varies just like everything else.

It is most common to do it before 3rd or before 4th year (I don't know which is more common). If you do it in the middle or after 4th year, as you can see, you raise speculation about your motivation. Some people defer graduation so that they can still be a "US senior" when they apply even if they didn't decide to do the research year until after starting/completing most of 4th year.

Yeah, I mentioned this earlier in the thread haha

Baylor College of Medicine. Solid match list :)

Absolutely baller poster graphic - with great specialty and institutional matches. Baylor has to be one of the BEST deals in medical school education in the country.

Just out of curiousity, why does Baylor not release match lists with names like other schools? I notice they don't even put a match list on their website.

thanks. i think it's an incredible match list and most people i know got their #1 or 2 choice. And yes, I agree it's an incredible deal (which is a big reason why I went to BCM). Top notch school at a relatively low cost with worlds largest medical center and every yr the #1 or 2 highest Step1 score (ok i'll stop selling it ha)

I'm not sure why BCM doesn't release match lists on their website. In my four yrs here, they never have. They just post it in the medical school, but it's great year after year.

Can anyone tell me if this is a good list? I recently got 160K of grant money from U Iowa, which might be too much financial aid to say no to. My goal is to do residency in Boston (mom lives there), and the lack of matching to the northeast really concerns me here. I am especially conflicted because I am also holding acceptances at Tufts and Boston U, but both will be in the ballpark of 100K more expensive.

edit: I am a Massachusetts resident.

If it's ok, I'll chime in with a pre-med, yet well though out opinion (which will possibly get derided later-lol). If you're happy with Iowa's program/curriculum/location don't rule it out based on a match list. If there's one thing we can learn from these threads, it's to not overanalyze these lists (and that a lot of unknown factors go into them). You might have PD's at Iowa that have excellent Boston connections and/or you can do aways at Boston programs and rock them. And while Boston is definitely an ideal location for many residencies (and plus you have family there) you really don't know what you'll be thinking as an MS-3,4. You might do a rotation elsewhere (i.e. not Boston) and eventually decide that it's another ideal place for you to train. And of course, the specialty you choose will determine a lot of things.

Anyway, congrats on the acceptances and the grant!!

I highly recommend Iowa. More than likely the lack of matches in Boston is a result of the applicant's regional bias' rather than inability to do so. Neither BU or Tufts is worth an extra 100Gs IMO.

it's a very regional match. i wouldn't call it great. it's ok. it's hard to analyze anyone's list though because you don't know what each person's preferences are. if you saw someone matched into Baylor for internal medicine and someone else matched into Hopkins for internal medicine, you'd say "wow the one with hopkins is better"...but what if i told you the guy who matched at Baylor interviewed at Hopkins but wanted to stay home at Baylor (or Iowa) for medicine and that was his #1 choice? you kind of need a combination of a match list plus percentage of people who got their top couple of choices....and even then it's hard. i wouldn't make a choice of a school just based on a match list...but if you are very interested in being in the NE/moving to Boston, your chances of matching into a prpogram out there will be easier if you already are going to school in that region as many residency interview invites are strongly regionally biased....but it's not impossible match out there as there are tons of residency programs in the NE.

Does anyone have the lists for VCU or MUSC?

Keep in mind a lot of people like to stay in the same state as where they went to school for residency too and/or to go back to their original hometown state for residency and beyond

They have a couple of people match to Boston programs each year, and a few to other programs in the Northeast. They likely don't have more because most people who go to Iowa want to stay close to home.

Iowa is a fairly strong medical school, and as has already been pointed out, most people who go there would probably prefer to stay close by, which is the most likely reason for the relative lack of NE matches. That is a massive amount of money, and unless you were holding an acceptance at HMS, I would never recommend turning it down. The good news is that Iowa has top 10 programs for ophtho, ENT and ortho, so you would be pretty well-covered for connections and rotations in some of the very competitive surgical subs that would help your application in the NE. For other specialties, you should have a good chance of matching in Boston, especially if you set up away rotations and expressed strong interest in the programs.

Given the enormity of the TMC, where do you guys get patient interaction and rotate? I'm sure you get the best possible exposure there.

I used to always wonder this about other schools on where their kids would rotate out of curiosity. The AMA's Freida online now has a section on medical school affiliation search that lists all the rotation sites for MD schools and where they sponsor their residencies.

thanks. i think it's an incredible match list and most people i know got their #1 or 2 choice.

They should keep it hidden, keep applications low. I'm so glad I can live in Texas so I can gun for Baylor and actually have a realistic shot, I would only turn it down for a full ride at Stanford or the East Coast (LOL).

Given the enormity of the TMC, where do you guys get patient interaction and rotate? I'm sure you get the best possible exposure there.

Medical students rotate primarily at these first four for core rotations:
1) Ben Taub General Hospital - Houston's county hospital...imagine doing rotations at the county hospital in the country's most diverse city. My favorite hospital to rotate at and the favorite of most other students. Hands on, very diverse pathologies, things you legitimately don't see elsewhere
2) Michael E DeBakey VA - the largest VA in the country, 2nd largest government building after the Pentagon
3) St. Lukes Hospital - private hospital associated with Texas Heart Insitute (big time Cards/CT program), site of first successful heart transplant
4) Texas Children's Hospital - largest children's hospital in the US, ranked 4th in the contry in 2013 (haven't seen the most recent ranking) but it's usually top 5
5) Methodist - less students rotate here, but you CAN do selectives/electives here such as urology, ent, psych
6) MD Anderson - very few rotate here...4 each rotation do psychiatry, but other than that, i dont think anyone else rotates here
- also we some do clinical rotations as well as some preclinical clinical experiences at a variety of outpatient clinics

so with our hospitals, you get clinical experience with all patient populations and pathologies (county, veterans, children, private) and you see how medicine is practiced in different settings. if i can make one plug that isn't just for baylor, i'd recommend that all pre-meds strongly considering going to a medical school with a county hospital...you get so much more hands on experience/training...it's awesome

but yes,the Texas Medical Center is amazing. nothing else like it (largest medical center in the world)...and i've seen lots of amazing hospitals/medical centers on my interview trail for residency

Please don't tell me you just said Houston is the most diverse city in the U.S.A....

I don't disagree with that statement. But I doubt the kid with 100K of debt is going to try any less hard to get a competitive specialty residency
Believe it or not some people actually like IM, peds, psych, and FM but could never afford to pursue them due to debt loads. I joke about not liking psych, but the truth is, if I had zero debt, I'd probably try for psych and go into PP, hoping to clear the low six figures but being happya long the way. Because I'm going to be buried in piles of debt, that just isn't a reasonable option.

Houston is the most diverse city in the world.

I've lived in New York City, Houston, and Sydney. Those are just the places I've lived. New York City wins this one, good luck arguing it.

Houston is the most diverse city in the universe. I've lived on Tatooine, Corellia, and Coruscant. I think I know a thing or two about diversity.

@bakedbeans18 no need to argue. everyone else makes the point for me

You will understand, that statistical reports are meaningless to someone (i.e., me) who has first hand experienced both Houston and NYC :)

likewise. you're not the only with with NYC roots

if we don't want to agree it's the most diverse city, then agree to disagree. it's one of the most diverse cities and a county hospital in a very diverse city is incredible to work at.

I'd say Toronto, NYC, and London are the most diverse cities in the world, followed closely by Houston/Sydney/Singapore/HK.

London is a close second to NYC. I'm considering egressing to London after finishing fellowship. If not that, I plan on maintaining rent on a property in London....maybe I should apply to MD/PhD after all lol

You're forgetting Moscow, you're forgetting Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago.

Singapore is incredible. I dated a white girl from Singapore - her accent was a hybrid of Indian and British and it made your heart melt.
