Match Day 2014

Am I wrong to think this is a really strong list for Wake Forest?

http://www.wakehealth.edu/uploadedF...Medicine/Features/2014_House_Officer_List.pdf

Ortho at Vanderbilt (the 1st name on the list) is like a lead-off home run in the WS.

Less impressive from Wake Forest is Ortho at JPS (perhaps one of the least well regarded ortho program) and Texas A&M.

You never know the whole story about individual applicants. Are they MD/PhD? Did they use to work for Stryker's engineering division? Do they have patents and 5+ publications in their name? Are they a star athlete? Do they have family connections? Just who are they? It's often more the individual person than the school.

Even the crappiest schools often send several people to really strong programs. Wake Forest is a great school though, but you need to read these match lists with a huge grain of salt.

This was very informative. Thanks everyone. I think people should consider Match Lists when it comes to applying to a particular medical school. After all, if you go to the top school and end up working at GAP- who cares? LOL. This helped me to narrow down my search list.

I actually really like PM&R. It's between that and Neurology for me. My heart is closest to Neurology, but I want to focus on helping patients post-TBI not just treating it and moving on. I truly want to provide services that challenge when a patient is told, " this is only as good as you'll be". PM&R is awesome!

I understand that choosing a med school based on match lists isn't good because it may only reflect candidate's interests.

What can I take away from this comparison? Will I still not be at any disadvantage for competitive specialties?

But what if we are comparing a school that traditionally sends many to primary care and ranks high on US news primary care (like umass, uvm) to a school that traditionally matches to specialties (georgetown/jefferson). I'm not talking about any one single year, but rather years of traditionally sending students to primary care or specialties. Year after year, certain schools send more to primary care.

What can I take away from this comparison? Will I still not be at any disadvantage for competitive specialties?

Anything other than the number of people going into FM is going to be inconclusive as a primary care stat. In other words, counting IM and Peds as all primary care numbers is disingenuous at best, which is what most med schools do when they publish numbers.

Thanks for the help...I see what you mean.
How about if a school of decent size sent only a couple of students to a particular specialty over the last few years - say school X sent only 3 students into ophtho over the last 4 years? Would you say this still only reflects lower interest?

Hmm, off the top of my head

Lack of interest?
Low step scores?
Poor step prep by the school?
Negative school reputation?
Few opportunities for students to explore various specialties?

In other words, I don't really know the answer to that, but there could be many variables.

Some schools have a mission to send as many students as possible to primary care residencies, and to that end they select applicants whose EC's are strong indicators of a future interest in a primary care specialty. EG UMass traditionally admits students with high amounts of service, international medical experiences, community activities, etc because those EC's strongly correlate with primary care interest. They are less interested in students with research-heavy apps because the assumption is that those students are probably interested in academia and want to specialize. But if you get into UMass/UVM and want to specialize, there is nothing holding you back from doing so.
