Not much else to talk about until more match lists come out. When they do someone will post it and the discussion will shift back to match lists. No need to worry.

I definitely agree with most everything you said in this post, SLC. However, I would just be wary of the thought process in the bolded text... oftentimes what is posted on program websites or FREIDA etc. for "competitive" scores is more of a minimum requirement, and you also have to consider that even DO-friendly ACGME programs, especially university ones, will hold DOs to a higher standard score-wise. Otherwise great post!

Yeah I assumed as much, though the particular program I'm talking about says: "200 to be competitive with our normal interview group". You're probably right, and I and fully aware of that. But it's one of the only, if not the only program I've seen with that wording.

Traditionally it's been something along the lines of "traditionally, applicants with USMLE scores of at least ... Have been most successful or something like that.

That, or they say some minimum score to be considered for interview.

I just took their wording as indication of their average board score. And even if they have a higher expectation from DO's, I have a good 30 points on their stated average, I hope that will be enough.

My opinion is that the match list is a poor indication of a school's quality. Good board scores, good audition rotations, etc. are due to students who understand the importance of being an advocate for their own success/education. These students will prioritize their board studying over school grades, be proactive about attaining quality audition rotations and research, and ultimately be the sole reason for this success. Med school provides you with an opportunity. The rest is up to you.

TL;DR: the match list is an indication of the quality of students, not the school.

I do think there are some schools that will show consistently better matches year after year. Point being that certain schools have better clinical education departments. There are a couple with notoriously bad clinical ed departments (that put tight restrictions on its students) and the rotations to match such quality. Of course success is determined by the individual… mostly… but there are most definitely other factors at play. I'd say looking at a collection of match lists over a span of 5 years could give an indication of quality.

KCUMB had 6 ortho matches= seems pretty legit

Well there goes the hidden gem known as psych

Because one school had quite a large number of psych matchs? I call bull. Perhaps they have am amazing psychiatrist on staff or in their clinical rotations who inspired more people to apply for psych residencies.

I don't think in the next 4/5 years there is going to be a big enough difference in the amount of ppl shooting for psych to affect any of us in an meaningful way.

Don't know about 2014 yet, but in 2013, there was a record number of psych matches nationwide. We'll see how it goes in the coming years.

Yeah I mean 17 psych matches is a lot but that school is huge. Like 250 per class or something. So only a minor upswing for a class that size. As to the future of competition...I think its gonna get worse for everybody. We're approaching a bottleneck of increased medical student enrollment and a comparatively flat residency spot growth trend. Who knows? Maybe psych could become more competitive with people getting their second or third choice specialty in the match?

From what I hear PM&R had a huge jump in competition this year.

Anyone have a rowan som match list? Heard they had some great matches

I think you're right. Plus I read a stat that the majority of psychiatrists are over 55, so imagine the climate 8-10 years down the road.

So VCOM-VC doesn't have anything up online yet to paste, but some of the more interesting matches were:

2 Urological Surgeries - both ACGME (according to the Albert Einstein SOM webiste, first D.O. to match here for Uro)
2 orthopedic Surgery - I believe both AOA
1 Optho - AOA
4 Diagnostic Radiology (3 ACGME 1 AOA)
Some excellent IM combined programs including to a school (not to be named) that traditionally isn't the most "D.O. friendly"
etc.

And VCOM-VC crushed peds. Also alot of excellent IM residencies including IM at Mayo Clinic

I think that people in med school now and those soon to start won't have major problems matching psych just because I think it takes a very specific personality type. But hey wtf do I know

-Sorry, but you're mistaken. The the 2 Uro matches at VCOM-VC were both osteopathic matches at CAMC (West Virginia) and Albert Einstein Medical Center (Philly -- this is an osteopathic match)
-Both Ortho were Osteopathic at Grandview and York.
-The Optho was at Larkin in Miami
-There were 3 diagnostic rads spots: U of Louisville, Aultman in Canton, and Larkin (osteopathic)

-There was an IM categorical match to Cleveland Clinic not Mayo Clinic

-Peds spots include Case Western, INOVA Fairfax, MUSC, Wake Forest, Duke, Le Bonheur in Memphis, Louisville, USF, Carilion, Geisenger, UC San Francisco, OKU, MCG, Penn State.

Isn't Einstein in Philly dually accredited?

No, the urology residency there is AOA only as of now, but there is talk of it going ACGME fairly soon now that the merger has occurred. Not sure of the timeline.

Thanks for correcting me!!!! The mayo clinic was a significant mistake.....But Cleveland Clinic is still a good residency.

The Albert Albert Einstein Medical Center is confusing, is that an MD school? Not that it matters (at least in my opinion, especially with the mergers coming up and for something like URO)

I wish VCOM would post something online for people to see. Their matches go un-noticed to masses

Albert Einstein Medical Center (and now its only called Einstein, no Albert, to avoid confusion) is a hospital in North Philly. Its historically a mixture of AOA and ACGME residencies.

Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University is the medical school in the Bronx. All residencies associated with it would be called Montefiore or Jacobi, as those are the hospitals affiliated with it directly.

Wow thank you guys haha. I have a strong interest in neurology and find this as very good news because they take a lot of D.O.'s I found out on their webpage just now. I can't be the only one that was confused by this.....anyway, back to matchlists

JUST FYI for future applicants
Albert einstein college of medicine/Yeshiva University is MD institution that are still very anti D.Os especially Einstein/Montefiore. Only departments that DOs can land in their residency is Surgical Prelim, PM&R. I know several DOs in ER in Montefiore program. Peds has only one DO. OBGYN has accepted D.Os as well. Do not waist your time applying IM program at Montefiore, they do not accept DOs PERIOD. Even psychiatry is anti DO.and I am not sure but when my friend did interview at family medicine, she was told that they have not accepted DOs. Anesthesia used to accept DOs but not anymore with new program director. Albert Einstein college of medicine has residency programs(which include montefiore, montefiore Lakefield, Jacobi, Beth Israel; this one might be under Mount sinai since mt sinai bought many hospitals including beth israel) that is second largest residency in the country(the website says 1200 residents and fellows). It is sad but that is just the way it is

This is my view of looking at how strong the match is
I do not like to look at how many students are matched into ortho(all of them are AOA anyway), optho, radiology, anesthesia. every school has smart students who can land in those residencies, once in a while there will be some super duper superstars that land into ACGME Derm or rad onc. I look at how many students match into ACGME Internal medicine university programs. Why?? Because ACGME IM is the field that represent the universities and every school both MD/DO has highest numbers matching into IM. IMs are the biggest portion of the field of Medicine including every board exam For example, John Hopkins accept DOs in anesthesia But does JHU ever accept DOs in IM?? Until ACGME internal medicine programs embrace DOs more, our profession has long way to go.

PS: I am not IM resident neither Surgical resident. Just one of DO graduates hoping to see DOs to grow in every branch of medicine

I think that's pretty shady of the new program director. If they were accepting DOs in the past and they kept accepting them, then clearly these residents were doing their job. Why suddenly ban DOs if they did nothing wrong to shame the program. Isn't there some oversight to the things PD's do? I hope so, at least with the merger now, that EVERYONE falls under ACGME for residency opportunities.

Which UCSF? I've only seen the Fresno branch take posterior osteopathic in primary care.

So you think we'll be seeing Beth Israel or St. Luke's (NYC) going in this direction as well? They seem to have a decent number of D.O. residents on board.

EDIT: they are both Mt. Sinai. Confusing them with hospitals with Jewish inspired names.

Mind you, Sinai is famously anti DO for its residencies that count. But SLR has been consistently warming up more and more to DOs every year. And even Sinai now has DOs in obgyn, so things to change with time. Especially recently.

Very solid matches from SOMA, IMO. Acgme neurosurg at Loma Linda? Neurosurg anywhere is an achievement for any med student from any school.

Also the USC med-peds match!!

WOW NOVA HAHAH.....not only is your school in the coolest location ever, but an awesome match list. Not that this is a competition, I want to see all D.O. schools kick butt, but I think this is up there w/ the best ones this year posted so far.

I'm noticing some university programs started taking DOs for the first time. This is a trend I'd love to continue.

Ya, about the Einstein NY discussion earlier.....they now have taken their first D.O. into internal med..... :) very pumped.

I think it says something that at a time when residencies are becoming more competitive, MD and DO (both have new schools opening, increased attendance etc.) that the MD schools are opening their doors to simply the best applicants, regardless of MD/DO....even if they do have bias still it is a start.

SO I go to VCOM and the head of neurosurgery at Carilion VC is an awesome dude, he has lectured us a few times. Probably the coolest guy ever. Excellent neurosurgery match PCOM-Phil

Definitely one of the top AOA neurosurgery programs...

Definitely one of the top AOA neurosurgery programs...

I would have to agree, probably I'm bias. But hard to say that many other AOA hospitals beat Carilion Clinic as far as case number, variety of cases and research at that facility.

Strong list by Nova. Looks pretty comparable to the LECOM 2014 Match list.

I have always believed that Nova is in the top 5 in the DO world. They have their rotations at some the best hospitals in South FL.
