No comments on the Dartmouth GS match? I'd imagine any university GS match is impressive as a DO nonetheless at Dartmouth

I dont see a match at UNC for Ophthalmology. Important distinction between UNC - a pretty darn solid program and USC/Palmetto Health - which is a program that is chronically on probation and at risk for closing each year. Could someone clear this up, or is this a mixup?

Also, I believe OBGYN at OK State is an AOA residency?

It's USC, that's my bad. I must have misheard... Not exactly up on what's going on in the optho world haha, they both sound impressive to me. I would go with the other guy's list though. As far as OK state maybe it is DO.. The map we're making seperates the residencies by accreditation but it's a little confusing to use and some people add their match to the wrong list.

What exactly determines a university program's tier? When I see schools like Florida, ETSU, South Dakota, Tennessee campuses, South Carolina etc. I'm not sure how one would rank them (not that it's important). It's obvious schools like WashU, UMich, Johns Hopkins are high tier because of research money, but what separates the other programs?

Ivy League undergrads are often not top tier in medicine.
Regardless, you don't see many DOs match into major categorical University GS programs. Not saying it's impossible but the majority end up in community programs

What exactly determines a university program's tier?

These things are pretty subjective and I think it the criteria varies per specialty, but at least as far as IM goes I would say the "step 1 score" of residency programs is their match list for fellowships. The so-called top tier IM residencies tend to consistently have matches to top-tier competitive fellowships (cards, GI, etc) at the big name programs. Another big criteria would be research prowess (which indirectly relates to fellowship applications), and another might be name-brand teaching faculty (which relates to social networking and recommendations for fellowship). See the pattern?

Knowing the criteria for these subjective "rankings" can be important. As an IM applicant that wasn't interested in cards or GI and who couldn't care less about research, it got me thinking: what would a "top tier" residency do for me? Maybe not as much as advertised. That's kinda why threads like this are a little silly. A rank list for any given school tells so little of the actual story, it almost begins to not matter at all. People choose residency programs for all kinds of reasons, and to be honest by the time you get to March of 4th year it tends to be less and less about name brand and more and more about the realities of life: location, subjective feel of the program, family, etc.

When I was a pre-med and even in my first 3 yrs of med school all I cared about was how many big names were on a school's match list- even when I would read logical posts like this telling me not to think that way. I finally realized, after going through the match myself, that there are SOOO many other factors that come into play besides the 'name' of a program, or how prestigious it is. You will never understand until you go through the process

Not sure why everyone is so shocked that RVU finally got a really strong match list. You don't have the highest Level-1 average that many years in a row without residency programs eventually noticing...

This is the "official" list that was sent to us by our dean. Not sure if people that matched into pgy-2 residencies had their specialty included. Not really sure.

I'm interested to find out what is up with the people that did "Traditional rotating internships and transitional year". Maybe they matched a PGY-2 program or maybe they have other special circumstances (pregnant, didn't match what they wanted.. etc). Regardless, congrats to them and I hope our class has an equally good match

If you look at the list almost all of the traditional rotating internships and transitional year matches were for the military. Doing a year of traditional rotating is pretty standard for the military (I believe it's required for some branches/specialties) and a transitional year is not uncommon at all. I almost took the HPSP, so I did a lot of research into that when I was considering it. Also, some specialties, like derm, will do a traditional rotating, transitional, or pre-lim year then start their specialty PGY-2. The 2015 match page on facebook has multiple people that are doing that for PGY-1 then doing rads, derm, or anesthesia starting their second year.

This is the "real" Harvard/MGH Psychiatry program

http://mghmcleanpsychiatry.partners.org/program/overview/

The "real" Harvard has four programs - MGH, Cambridge, Longwood, and South Shore. All four are Harvard programs, although SS is an affiliate and less prestigious than the other three. MGH, Cambridge, and Longwood are top-notch Harvard programs in psychiatry and highly respected.

No comments on the Dartmouth GS match? I'd imagine any university GS match is impressive as a DO nonetheless at Dartmouth

It's not rare for a DO to end up at a university GS program. Multiple people do it from every DO school every year. The match at Dartmouth is impressive because it's at Dartmouth.

undesirable locale, albeit solid upper-to-mid-bottom-low-tier program with limited potential. interesting but meaningless data.

Meh. Everyone has a different idea about what locations are undesirable. I would be ecstatic if i matched in Rochester or anywhere in MN really.

Honestly my only issue with Rochester would be the fact that basicallly EVERYONE works in medicine or medical science. Philadelpha was bad enough for that issue.

My consideration is more that it's close enough to my family that I can see them if I want but far enough from my MIL that she might not show up unannounced and demand quality time. *might*

A few results for Rowan after some digging:

Anesthesia - Riverside Regional, CA
EM - Lehigh Valley Health Network
FM - Brown Medical School/Memorial Hospital
FM - Overlook Medical Center
PM&R - Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation

Unknown at Duke, UC Irvine Medical Center, Cleveland Clinic

RowanSOM seems to have substantial number of AOA matches (82 vs 60 ACGME), probably because its home program is one of the biggest AOA residency programs.

It is actually not integrated CT which is 6 years. It is a general surgery match, but IU agreed to do a 4+3 deal where he is a CT surgeon after 7 years. Still an awesome match, unfortunately general surgery is still pretty competitive for DOs.

Someone from TCOM usually matches into JPS ortho. Heard last year was the first time they didn't match someone in a while because the guy ranked another program higher. Not sure about this year though.
