Hi all,

Is it recommended to e-mail potential research mentors and set up appointments when visiting a school for an interview? For example, say you are interviewing at some school on a Wednesday, would it be worth it to get appointments with potential research mentors on Tuesday and arrive at the school a day early to meet with the potential mentors? Or is this a waste of time since there is no guarantee that you will end up at said school? Would it look favorably during the interview if one mentions that they have already spoken with potential mentors at the school?

Just knowing well about their work and having a list of 3-5 potential mentors will impress the MD/PhD program director. You certainly will enjoy better the process and get to meet a lot of people in your area of interest, but it will cost you extra. Typically, these very targeted visits will happen during 2nd visits.
