Hi y'all.

I applied to a bunch of schools this cycle (both MD and DO) and have narrowed my choices down to Mercer and PCOM-Philly. I'm having a tough time choosing between them. PCOM seems like a fine school. However, I'm interested in surgery and I know that it is easier to get surgery coming from an MD school, aka Mercer. YET, while I was doing more research into these schools I stumbled upon the match lists:

Mercer: https://medicine.mercer.edu/mu-medicine/student-services/residency/nrmp2014/upload/matchday2014.pdf

PCOM: http://mobi-1.pcom.edu/sites/default/files/users/user4/student_affairs/MatchList2014Phila041614.pdf

PCOM seems like a stronger match list, no? Should I pick PCOM if I want to do surgery?

Thanks

Go MD. Stop looking at match lists. Too many factors play into it, almost all dependent on the student and not the school.

I go to Mercer. If you want to know about the school, and not just about being matched, feel free to ask me anything

:wtf: Pick whatever school you feel more comfortable at. PCOM will not hold you back from being a surgeon.

I didn't really say this, but if OP decides s/he wants to go to a big academic surgical program, it will hold them back and it will for the surgical sub-specialties. I'm not saying it can't be done, but there is still some of a stigma, especially with the surgical specialties.

Agreed. Although not so much for surgical specialties, more so for an academic surgery position.

Here are the important things to consider:

Philly, PA: cheesesteak!

Macon, GA: barbecue, fried chicken and sweet potato pie!

I really don't think you can go wrong with either school.

PCOM has tons of residency spots in surgical subspecialties. Check out the GME part of their website.

Mercer being a US MD school will also offer you the ability to do surgery. However from what I have been told try to keep an open mind about speciality!

As someone on Mercer's waitlist, go to PCOM! ;)

I go to Penn and interact quite a lot with PCOM students. They are outstanding and extremely well trained. Their reputation is well known in Philly and many attendings at Penn that have a DO were trained at PCOM. Philly is also an amazing place. I personally would recommend PCOM.
