The best evidence for a causal relationship b/w a nasal carrier of staphylococci and a staphylococcal infection in a hospital patient is the demonstration that the organisms from both individuals..

1.are coagulase positive
2.are penicillin resistant
3.are of same phage type( ans)
4.are aureus type staphylococci
5.produce hemolysis, liquefy gelation and ferment mannitol

can anyone explain????

Since staphylococci are one of the most likely bacteria to undergo genetic changes (causing drug resistance and a number of other variations) the only way to link two separate individuals' infection is through phage typing. All the other types are too nonspecific, i.e. coagulase positive will only confirm the presence of Staph aureus which can be from a number of different source, not the DNA sequence. It's kind of the same principle for paternity testing. You wouldn't just test for a "homo-sapien" gene, you would get more specific. Does that make sense? Or am I just rambling?
