Military to civilian?

Is it possible to switch to a civilian residency after starting a military residency, as long as the specialty remains the same? Does the military care as long as they're still filling their need?

No. The military has to ensure that its residency programs are viable by filling them first before they send folks out. It's pretty hard to change residency positions once you've started especially in the military. They might require you to do another GMO tour before you are allowed to re-apply for another position.
