Question for those who have interviewed before: Can you explain the entire interview day to me? My interview is in the afternoon, so I 'm curious about check-ins, or is there nothing before the lunch/student panel?

When you walk into the school they have a sign in table that you can't miss! They should give you a name tag and direct you where you need to go :)

I interviewed in the morning, but....
I walked in and signed in, went into a lobby to wait for my interview then interviewed. After that we met in a classroom (someone walked me there) and had lunch where they gave some presentations and had a student panel. After that I toured the school and hospital. I imagine if you interview in the afternoon then you would tour before lunch/presentations.
It was a fun day :)

I think it depends on what time you have your interview. Mine was late-afternoon, so I arrived around 1130 or so, ate lunch (they will escort you places so don't be worried about getting lost!), had my tour, and then interviewed. Very relaxed, and there wasn't any point where I was confused as to what I was supposed to do; an ambassador will make sure you get to where you are supposed to!

I agree with Ashgirl, plus Mizzou's ambassadors and wandering professors were so nice last year!

If any of you are flying into STL or KC keep in mind that the Megabus travels to Columbia from these places. May be cheaper than renting a car? And like other people have offered, I'd be happy to provide rides when you're in town (my place is waaaay too small otherwise I'd help out there as well!).

Same as what others have said, Mizzou interview days are very well organized. You'll get an email with attached instructions and clarifications as the date gets closer. Regardless of what time your interview is though, you can expect an awesome lunch, tour, and student panel during non-interview time.

not for me...i thot for sure they'd come out today....getting impatient over here

I'm beginning to wonder if no news = rejection. Do they actually send out notices of rejection?

I'm sure they do. They probably need some time to figure out how many people turned down the interview and how many spots they have left to offer people highest on the waitlist.

I hope they figure it out today. I need official news, even if it's bad news. haha

Howdy! I feel like I have seen your profile pop up on every school I applied to. Just out of curiosity, which schools did you apply to?
I applied to Texas A&M, Kansas State, Mizzou, Auburn and Illinois.

I'm slowing going crazy waiting every day

Yeah, I mean, I'd kind of expected it when I didn't get an email back in November. Oh well. Plenty more to hear from!

Awwwww, I'm sorry to hear that, @ameropean_chelsea and @JayBird1625 ! I was really hoping more invites would go out to SDN people! But Chelsea's right - there are plenty of other schools that are still deciding on interviews. Good luck! :luck:

got my rejection as well. Same day as my interview at Western U lol.

Rejection came for me as well...no vet school for me next year :bag:
Oh well at least plan B is already underway! Good luck everybody :luck:

Any suggestions from current students of local hotels, restaurants, bars, etc? I'll be in town from Friday 1/2 to Sunday 1/4 for my Saturday interview and would love to check out the highlights of Columbia (and hopefully convince my corporate attorney husband that living in a small town wouldn't be as awful as he thinks!) ;)

Congrats on your interview! I will be around that weekend helping with interviews along with a bunch of my classmates. I'm hosting another interviewee that weekend, and I'm sure we will be going out for dinner or something at some point, so you're welcome to join! Feel free to send me a PM as it gets closer if you'd like to meet up!

Otherwise, Columbia is a typical college town with lots of bar/pub like restaurants (both family owned and chains) so there's definitely lots of options. Columbia has some incredible BBQ places. Shotgun Pete's and Bandana's are both really good! There are also a ton of awesome Mexican places. Everyone seems to have a favorite, but I'm a frequent flyer at La Siesta and El Maguey. (@Rainheart loves Las Margaritas which is also really good!) Otherwise, there are a lot of restaurants downtown near the school (around Broadway). The Heidelberg is a really good German/american restaurant with a lot of history. Shakespeare's and Gumby's are both popular for pizza. And as for bars, there's Harpos, Shiloh's, Trops (tropical slushy liquor place), the Field House... There are so many, but those are a few downtown. There's also a comedy club/bar called Deja Vu if you like that scene, and the Blue Note is a small concert hall that gets some big names for a small place. I'm not sure who they'll have over that interview weekend but it may 've worthwhile to check out. Oh, and if you like Ice Cream, Buck's is literally a 5 minute walk from the vet school. They have holiday flavors now! And if you like homemade chocolates, I'd recommend checking out the Candy Factory on Cherry St.

I'm from a small town on the east coast, and I came here thinking Columbia would be small, but its actually quite a bit bigger than you'd think. I was pleasantly surprised. As for hotels, I have stayed at the Fairfield Mariott in town as well as the Ramada Inn and didn't have any complaints about either.

Hope this helps! I'm sure others can contribute even more.

Last year, a bunch of interviewees and I went out to Flat Branch... definitely a place to go if you've never been to Columbia before!

@GoldenGirl28 - some really awesome places to eat are: 1. Flatbranch Brewery - seriously one of Columbia's best places. 2. Addison's downtown - the Nachos on the app menu are freaking amazing, among a lot of of items 3. Sophias - has the same owner as Addison's and its supposedly has an amazing brunch. 4. Jazz (near the mall) - its a Louisiana Kitchen and they have one of the best margs ive ever had - So good. - they also are a good place to get some seafood.... speaking of Margs --> 5. Las Margaritas - the best mexican place ive had in town, its comparable to all the mexican ive had back home. 6. Kostaki's Pizza is a locally owned pizza joint that is really good. 7. Shilohs- one of the best places to eat and watch football / baseball games - when its a Mizzou away game this is one of our places to hit up for a good time - they have a patio with tvs and the atmosphere is super fun.

Downtown has some really good and fun sports bars and when Mizzou is away they are the place to go to watch the game with all your friends. Too many to list, but downtown is a really fun place. Columbia also has most of your normal chain restaurants, the only thing I wish Como had that isnt here is a Chic Fil A... If you have any specific questions feel free to ask!

But... we are getting a Chick-fil-A *cue party music and dancing* Probably in about a year! They have to tear down the Macaroni Grill first... WHOOOOO!!
Oh also awesome thai food- Bangkok Gardens downtown... but of course I usually want that place on a Sunday and they are closed (sounds familiar, right?)

Thank you so much @beatles1964, @Rainheart, and @Kpowell14! That was super helpful! I'm definitely in for dinner on Saturday night - we should all get a big group together! I'll leave the planning to you guys for Saturday night, but it's good to have some suggestions of places to eat on Friday and Sunday. I have a feeling I'm going to fall madly in love with Mizzou, so I'm really, really, really hoping the interview goes well! I can't wait to meet all you guys in person in 3 weeks! :)

Hey guys- I know this is jumping the gun, but I figured Id go ahead and say something now.. If any of you guys get accepted in January and want to move up to Columbia ASAP, there will be a bedroom opening in my place when I move into my new house with my husband on Feb 1st. This would initially be a sublease but can be long term!! My roomies really love the house and plan on being in the same place until graduation.

If you move up here sooner you can potentially apply for residency sooner and could get in state tuition starting spring semester of first year assuming you can make the $2,000.

Looking for a girl, you would be living with 2 other students that will be 3rd years when you start. There are 4 dogs which are all very well behaved and spend most of their time in their parents rooms. Rent and utilities are very cheap and will keep your loans down! It's about a 10-15 min drive to school depending on traffic.

If anyone is interested shoot me a message!

Well I haven't been on here since like school started (evidently @beatles1964, @Ashgirl, @Rainheart and @Kpowell14 have their lives together more than I do), but I am so excited for everyone who got interviews! I will also be around the first week of interviews so I look forward to seeing everyone there. Good luck! You will all do wonderful! :)

Hi, guys! I'll be in Columbia for the weekend for my interview as well and I was wondering if any of the restaurants you listed above were "family friendly"? It'll just be my dad and me so I don't want it to be an awkwardly young scene since I want him to feel comfortable, if that makes any sense.

Also, apart from places to eat, what are some nice places to see while visiting to get the best snapshot of the city and the area for such a quick visit? I figured that asking vet students that are now locals would really give me the best ideas. Thanks!!!

Pretty much every place in my list of restaurants is family friendly except maybe Shilohs.. I would take my parents to shilohs and they would like it , but my parents also love watching sports so I guess it just depends on what your parents are like. Flatbranch/ Sophia's/ Addisons are great places and they don't really have a "young scene" at all.

As far as places to see, I would definitely take a trip over to main campus and walk around if the weather cooperates. The campus is really really pretty. Also walk downtown for a bit and check out all the local stores / restaurants... There are a ton of parks and walking trails... @Rainheart is an expert on those.. I always like driving down Rollins and looking at the Frat and sorority houses, they are flipping huge!!

Random question... How is the weather like in Missouri right now? Is there snow? I will be renting a car from Saint Louis and driving. In case anybody is wondering, the cost is like $20 for the rental excluding gas.

Like @Kpowell14 said, I would stay away from some of the sports bars/pubs downtown if you're looking for more of a family friendly place to eat. If you do go, you shouldn't run into the college crowd until later, so lunch would probably be fine. Otherwise, there are lots of other places you could go. I took my dad to La Siesta and the Heidelberg when he came to visit recently and he loved both. The Yelp app is really helpful for finding good places to eat. If you'd rather go somewhere familiar, there are also a lot of chains nearby (Applebees, Ruby Tuesday's, Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Buffalo Wild Wings, Panera, etc).

I'm home on break at the moment, but last I checked it was like 15 degrees in COMO lol . I would check the weather channel while you pack for your trip! Weather changes pretty rapidly in COMO, one day it can be 40/50s then the next day it can be in the 20s !! I have the Weather channel app on my phone and it comes in handy.

There is currently no snow on the ground here in Columbia, but temperature-wise it was mid-high 20s today so bring a coat and winter shoes!

Edit: If you want some midwest barbecue, there are lots of good places around town. My favorite from where I live in KC is Smokehouse. They just opened a restaurant by the mall here in town. I haven't been to this location specifically, but they have several stores in several states so I imagine quality is at least somewhat consistent.

How much of the tour is outside? My interview outfit isn't exactly suitable for cold weather, and I saw the forecast for my interview day (Saturday) is freezing rain.:p Is it a mostly indoor tour, or should I worry about finding a business casual coat to wear?

It's mostly indoors. You're outdoors for a couple of minutes to go between the clinic and the academic building

@Kpowell14 @beatles1964 Thanks for the input! I really appreciate it! I'm so excited to come interview this weekend especially since I'm from the east coast and have never been to Missouri before. It's rather unfortunate that the weather will be awful Saturday but it is what it is, I guess!

like @Gwenevre said, the majority of the tour will be indoors. I would recommend having a pair of shoes to change into if your interview shoes are not comfortable.. The tour is pretty long and is a lot of walking so if your in heels it can be pretty miserable.

They also make you put on plastic shoe covers in the Large animal/ Equine clinic and they are pretty hard to walk in in heels as well! - If your a dude, well then you can disregard everything I said hahaha

Thanks for the advice about the shoes! I didn't even think about the possibility of shoe covers on the tour.

And the tour is totally casual - if you want to bring some comfy sneakers or other shoes for the tour, and the rest of the day after your interview, feel free! The ambassadors have no influence on your admission process, and we want you to be comfortable. :)

Hey everyone who's interviewing this weekend! Be on the lookout for the short brown-haired girl skipping around with a Pokéball necklace. She's a totally awesome person and is totally not (but absolutely yes) @Ashgirl . Again, she will be skipping, all day erry day.
