Mizzou 2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone!

I'm the lurker that Pingouin asked to pm her last week... just thought I would come out from hiding and poke my head in.

Sounds like everyone is keeping fairly busy will all these little tasks they keep sending us, especially finding housing. I am also looking for a roommate that would want to live downtown or close to school (female looking for a female) so pm me if you are interested.

Can't wait to meet you all in July!

I don't think anyone has, so you are MORE THAN WELCOME to do it. :D

On a related note, I'm going out this weekend to look for a place to live. Wish me luck. I'm open to listening to advice on which parts of town to/to not live in.

And lacrossefiend- thanks soooooooo much for the conversion chart! That helps a lot!

Not a problem. Oh, and steer clear of the streets Worley/Rogers off of Providence. A lot of people live south of campus... and there are some nice places where you have to be 22 to live there (so no undergrads) like Katy Place and Deer Valley (essentially the same complex, but Deer Valley is newer).

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here still hoping to get off the waitlist. I hope when I call tomorrow I hear good news about the waitlist movement. Has anyone heard if it is has been the same as past years? When my friend stopped in to ask last week at the office, he was told they were at 40. Does anyone have news on where it is now? Good Luck to all of us! I wish I hadn't left Columbia for the summer -- I would be in the office daily annoying them by asking about the waitlist:)

:hello:

by the way... yes, there is a new Facebook group for us. I didn't start it. I think you'll all be a little surprised to see who did. :D

So, I just withdrew this morning... so I guess I'm not allowed here anymore :(

Do you really think it's her... did you look at her profile?

Ha ha ha ha! I was a lot more than a "little" surprised. That's very interesting. Maybe she wants to get to know us better or maybe it's fallout from "the incident"?

So, are you joining the group?

Congrats on Rochester. Hopefully our paths will cross again in the future -- and you're welcome to stop by for tea and biscuits anytime.

And yeah, I bet it's her or at least someone who works directly with her.

:wow:

Whoa, did NOT hear about that. That's not cool at ALL. Glad the guy was OK in his apartment...

oh and yes- I will join. ;) Will YOU?

Yah, that's pretty ridiculous. Didn't he get expelled?

Man... I've been boycotting Facebook for five years, but now I'm really thinking about joining just so I can see our class. Let me know if I'm missing anything grand.

I too have avoided Facebook, but today I created an account and joined the group. Now I'm waiting to see what all the fuss is about. :p

The guy whose apartment got ran into is one of my really good friends... I worked in the same research lab as him and he was in some of my classes. He came into class on the Monday after and was like so did you hear about the house that got ran into? Yeah, it was mine.... Crazy. His car was totally messed up so he had to drive his grandpa's minivan around

And I dunno if the guy got expelled... but my friend definitely wrote a letter to the dean saying that he should be.

(Oh, and yes I will be stalking this thread)

So another week of waiting and hoping for some good news. Does anyone know how much movement happens typically in June? At some other schools, I was told it is quite a bit, but I couldn't get a good sense when I spoke to the admissions office Mizzou about it.

Happy Monday Morning everyone(said after many many many cups of coffee :) )

[stalking thread]

I'm having coffee w/ Marivern on Friday... I'll ask her about stuff for you... that is, if you don't get in first!

[/stalking thread]

PS... I noticed some of my friends had joined a facebook group for your class that wasn't the one previously created... search University of Missouri SOM Class of 2012.

Maybe she can change your mind about Rochester so you come back to Mizzou? :D

You are just too too nice! I appreciate you asking her for those of us still on this waitlist.

Hopefully this link works, but Consumer Reports just came out with "most aggressive" and "most conservative" hospitals, and MU made the top 10 on conservative- which seems to be a very good thing if you read into it a bit.

Very interesting article. I wonder how much better healthcare we can provide to peope if we really looked at how cost inefficient some our system is.

I shouldn't really be posting here yet since I'm not accepted, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed since we're in the 50s already and it is still early in june. Can you blame me for hoping :)

For those of you with mdapplicants profiles --- don't forget to update with your Mizzou acceptance. I appreciated knowing what kind of people made it at Mizzou when I was deciding where/how to apply! I'm sure the next round will, too.

I haven't read the entire article, but I did read the teaser. I was thinking on my way into work this morning that cost was a factor in their ranking.

Cost is tricky because it reflects how the encounter was documented, and thus how it was billed, and not necessarily the actual acuity of the illness. It comes down to very explicit terminology. You get paid more for "hypokalemia" than you do for "low potassium." Diabetes mellitus can be "uncontrolled," but if you document it as "poorly controlled" you are SOL for billing purposes.

I know some people at MU believe we are underdocumenting, i.e., underbilling, the visits. They've gone so far as to hire "clinical information specialists" to review the progress notes and help the docs understand the Medicare documentation requirements to ensure everything is top speed.

I was just thinking that maybe the report is skewed because it relies on billing figures and not review of patient cases. Not that there is a better way to compare multiple centers against each other, just thinking out loud. Carry on.

I'll jump in: I agree that comparing hospital has its downfalls. For example, patient A at NYU might want to have every imaginable treatment option thrown at an incurable disease, whereas Patien B might want just palliative care. So then NYU looks bad, and MU looks good in this kind of survey. So does it come down to a) we don't bill well or b) we really aren't as invasive as other places. If you look at cost by region, not by hospital, you will see that places like New York are much higher than say Columbia if you compare cost/x number of patients. That to me is a better indicator of how we are utilizing our dollars than comparing it by hospital.

Or, it could just be that at MU, they don't get a specialist involved as often as NYU does, since specailist=costlier outcomes.

The data that comes out of Dartmouth is very very interesting. They really show you how a) we have too many physicians in the form of specialists and b) care is better by primary care than specialists for the most part. I am generalizing of course. But if you have a couple of months on your hands, you can really have some great fun with the data.

Boy, I sound like a total geek :p Now if they would just let me in :)

I might be slightly behind on that..

I keep forgetting to get transcripts ordered from my post-bacc. Have to do that.. would have done it when I ordered the other two, but *WHOOPS* my biochem prof forgot to include my term paper grade into my final grade (which caused a full letter-grade drop), so it took almost 2 weeks to get that corrected.

You are living on the edge! I bet you were a train dodger as a kid. Probably played chicken the first week you had your driver's license. What other risky behaviors do you participate in? Wait. Nevermind. I'm not sure I really want to know. :p

Hey, couple more questions here:

CPR Training - I was reading over the letter requiring CPR training and it says your card is checked before block 2, but that you should have class done before July 1. I haven't taken it yet, but can take a local red cross one (1yr cert) next week if I have to. What I'm wondering is, can I find the next time it's in the columbia FD (2yr for $35) in early july, would anyone care? I can go either way, but the if there is a Columbia FD one in July it'd be more convenient for me.

Still looking for a roommate - I found a decent 2 bedroom apartment near Stewart and Providence for 850/mo. It's pretty new, has an awesome kitchen (I bake a bit, so that was important tome), spacious, includes a washer/dryer and internet, a spiffy patio and looks like it's exactly 1 mile to medschool (I plan on walking/biking regularly). I'd prefer a fellow M1 (for schedule sake) and male/female isn't as important to me as someone that is clean, respectful, and splits duties (I am male though). PM me if interested!

Hey, for anyone who received Ms. Easton's email on Monday about loggin in to myZou, have you been able to see your financial aid package? I filled out the e-Consent but it's still says there are no financial aid awards available for viewing in this aid year...

Hmmm, I suppose I ought to give them a call.

The whole myZou thing was confusing to me, but I think it was me being dumb. If you are having the same problem I had, make sure you go and do the bootstrap password reset process first, otherwise you cannot do anything on the site (it just acts weird and loops the navigation). If it's something else, then email myZou support, they're helpful.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know what number they're up to on the waitlist?

Call Laura and tell her when you are getting your BLS card. She'll probably say, "No problem if it's not here July 1. Just get it to me before ACE starts in block 2." If they really need it by July 1 she'll let you know.

And while you're on the phone with Laura, ask what the waitlist number is for hawk126. ;)

myZou is confusing, but it is way better than what they had before (and I'm talking about just two years ago). We used to use some sort of terminal emulator and log directly into the mainframe! F3 this and F6 that. Ugh.

I talked to Laura about this a few weeks ago- the place I wanted to take it was filled up for June but I could get in on July 2. She said it was fine. I'd call her as a courtesy to double-check, but as long as you have it scheduled I don't think it'll be a problem.

No- I haven't been able to see mine. I filled out a special circumstances form for Cheri (significant loss of income for me to go back to school) and just got my new EFC on Friday, plus an email update from FAFSA today. So hopefully soon.

As far as the rest of MyZou, this is going to be a pain in my neck. I did post-bacc at another UM and had forwarded my email to a yahoo account for the sake of ease. Well now that I switched from the other school to Mizzou.. yep- all email still forwarded and I can't get into the Blackboard system to try and fix it (SSO/password combo won't work). Argh.

And while you're on the phone with Laura, ask what the waitlist number is for hawk126. ;)

You have the makings of a great attending. Have you given any thought to academic medicine? :D

Hello everybody. Sorry for my hiatus. I guess the other thread is sort of dying down. I did just join the Facebook group. I think I'm going to skip Jumpstart. Didn't sound like it was for me, plus, I'm afraid of burning out and could use the extra week. Just found a house with two other M1's in Columbia. Moving there the second week of July. Anyone know of any good furniture places in CoMO.

Also just finished my Red Cross AED/CPR recertification. $40. Lame.

Oh, and one more thing. Is anyone interested in football group seating? I hear you have to buy tickets in groups if you want to sit together with anyone.

I found a place right next to campus I'm applying for, no roomate yet but I'm not in a rush atm. I need to look through my stuff, but how late can I sign up for Jumpstart? I might be interested in it if I can still get in.

The BCFD BLS training for $35/two years is again on July 14th, Laura Carroz said it was cool for me to take it then. Email her if you want to do the same thing (sorry, I don't have the BCFD phone # on me right now).

And finally on the football passes, on my second visit when I went to a PBL section and chatted with the students, it seemd the tix were organized and purchased once school started. I'm sure the M2s will clear us up on what to do.

Not much traffic here or on facebook. Is everyone just chillin' until you move to Columbia and school starts?

Yeep, that's about the lot of it. I've got a sweet gig delivering meds for a couple of the local pharmacies for a few hours each afternoon... which conveniently leaves mornings for my more trivial pursuits.

I'll be moving to Columbia the weekend before Jump Start.

I'm moving out sometime the week of the 14th. Going to meet my landlords tomorrow (they live near me). Lease starts 7/15. Movers coming tomorrow and Friday to give estimates since my friends have already done their "one big move" that we all do for each other.

ETA: And I sent in the last of my paperwork today, thankyouverymuch. :)
