Re: Public Comment Web Page on the Proposed Standards for the ABMS Program for MOC

On September 20th, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) launched its Public Comment Web Page on the Proposed Standards for the ABMS Program for MOC to provide an additional means to solicit feedback about the proposed standards for the ABMS Program for Maintenance of Certification (MOC).

As a diplomate of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR), your feedback is valuable to the ABMS. We encourage you to be part of the review process by providing your comments. You can find the proposed standards, as well as a preface to the document that provides history and context to them, at http://standardspubliccomments.abms.org. In addition, feel free to share this web page address with stakeholders who you believe will be interested in commenting on the proposed standards. The comment period ends November 20, 2013.

These proposed standards have been developed over a two-year process, beginning with the 2012 MOC Framework document and continuing, during this past year, with an extensive process for the development of the standards. These standards will provide an overarching framework for the 24 ABMS member boards in the development of their programs for MOC while allowing flexibility for each board to appropriately tailor its program to the specific discipline as well as to continuously innovate and improve. To date, hundreds of individuals from the ABMS member boards community, including the ABMS Board of Directors, associate member organizations, diplomates, and the public, have provided input into the development of these proposed standards.

Following review of the feedback provided during the comment period, the proposed standards will be considered for approval by the ABMS Board of Directors at its January 2014 meeting. No standards will take effect until 2015; however, we anticipate implementation planning to begin at the ABPMR in 2014.

Thank you for participating in this process and providing your comments.
