thought i'd start this up.

after wracking my brain trying to decode the acronym for the JC virus, i learned the following . . .

The JC virus (JCV) is a type of human polyomavirus (formerly known as papovavirus) and is genetically similar to BK virus and SV40. It was discovered in 1971 and named after the two initials of a patient with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). The virus causes PML and other diseases only in cases of immunodeficiency, as in AIDS, or immunosuppression, as in organ transplant patients. It is common in the general population, infecting 70-90 of humans in north america.

so, be it known that they are now called POLYOMAVIRUS's

if anyone thinks they may have hard time coming up with a good mnemonic for this one . . . just think of being infected by our lord and savior

I remember our microbiology teacher showed a clip from a Scrubs episode starring Michael J. Fox talking about the JC virus and its ability to cause PML. :D

It was Thomas Paine who, in 1776, described the beginnings of the Revolutionary War by saying "These are the times that try men's souls"

Coincidentally Paine was also a medical student at the time, and historians still debate whether in this famous quote he is referring to the battle for independence, or his frustrations in studying for Ye Ole Licensing Exam, Step 1.

In 1892, Pfeifer first described the skin condition now known as Weber-Christian disease, or idiopathic lobular panniculitis. In 1925, Weber further depicted the syndrome. In 1928, Christian emphasized the significance of fever as part of the syndrome.

Weber-Christian disease is a skin condition that features recurring inflammation in the fat layer of the skin. The involved areas of skin manifest as recurrent crops of erythematous, sometimes tender, edematous subcutaneous nodules. The lesions are symmetric in distribution, and the thighs and lower legs are affected most frequently. Malaise, fever, and arthralgias frequently occur. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, weight loss, and hepatomegaly may also occur. Because its etiology is unknown, Weber-Christian disease is often referred to as idiopathic lobular panniculitis.
