Its a real shame this environment.

Just had a very good and respected Neurosurgeon in my region visit my office. His private practice was non-viable due to too many spine surgeons in his area and the local hospital hiring a new spine surgeon. He had to take an employed position with another hospital system elsewhere in the area.

If this is happening to quality Neurosurgeons, it can happen to anybody. This is a really disheartening time to be a physician.

...you could hire him...

Non viable losing money? Or nonviable not making enough to be worth the hassle?

Extremely likely that it's #2.

Not making the massive salary he was expecting and/or used to, or just didn't want to dig his heels in and build a practice over time, and opted for the quick sellout to a hospital system with the quick salary guarantee, which are never really "guarantees," actually. No hospital is going to continue to pay anyone a guaranteed base, if they're not generating that amount of revenue to cover their salary plus some take home for them.

if he is a good neurosurgeon, then he wont generate as much money as a bad one who operates on everyone. you have to question a system that rewards bad docs with more money. this isnt always the case, but for specialists, it USUALLY is.....
