hi!

I apologise in advance if these questions have been asked. I am hoping to get into med in 2017 and I was hoping to know how one goes about applying to two different residencies.

I am an Australian citizen and so will be a IMG but I have read about how I would get into a US residency, visa stuff and the rest so I'm not going to worry about that now. I am however planning ahead to make sure I can give myself the best advantage I can as I would love to live in America!

Obviously neuro is harder to get into than general, so I will be pursuing my PhD during medical school in the field of neuroscience, and will plan to get as close to neurosurgery during my rotations in the US and to do some neurosurgery research as well.

In a perfect world for my application for neurosurgery I would obviously want 3 LoRs from American neurosurgeons, so say I have that, my question is how would I go about applying to general surgery residencies when my CV is clearly meant for neurosurgery? Would this be a disadvantage? If so how would I go about resolving this disadvantage?

I'd just like to say that I am aware that choosing a specialty this early in the game is a bit premature, but as an IMG hoping to match into a categorical spot in quite possibly very competitive specialties doesn't really give me the option to wait until the last year to figure it out. Also I am confident having investigated each specialty that surgery in any form would be immensely satisfying to me, being able to help patients with my hands and see the results immediately (within reason and in most cases of course) is really appealing. But I will be keeping an open mind when I start medical school and I plan on shadowing different specialists as soon as I can.

Thank you in advance for your time and help.
